#DM7: A Primer On The Left In NC (PT III)

My weekly column at Da Tech Guy is up here: A Primer On The Left In NC (PT III)

_____________________

In Part II of A Primer on the Left in NC, we looked at the leader of the “grassroots” Moral Monday movement, Reverend William Barber. This week, it’s important to learn about the start of Moral Monday and their tactics because, as I predicted, it’s spreading. Just this past week, Barber met with various unnamed activists from 12 other states with the intent to help organize Moral Monday’s elsewhere. One of the attendees was Democratic state Sen. Hank Sanders of Alabama. I view this as the reaction of the organized Left realizing how much power is held by the individual states. Too many for the comfort of the Left are under Republican leadership. Continue reading

#DM7 Article: A Primer on the Left in NC (Part I)

My latest is up at DaTechGuy: A Primer on the Left in NC

Those of you who follow my personal blog might be acquainted with my mapping of the Left in North Carolina already. For those of you just getting to know me and my writing, you’re in for some fun and a little bit of catch-up. Back in May, I wrote about how the Democrats were melting down in North Carolina. Continue reading

Like a Rash… Moral Monday Spreading

First, an obligatory I told you so.

From the Atlanta Progressive News, emphasis added:

(APN) ATLANTA — Since August 19, 2013, a “Moral Monday” movement has been building in Georgia to take back our State government from the interests of corporations and wealthy people. The Moral Monday Georgia Coalition, which includes people of faith and citizens of Georgia, has been meeting every two weeks to plan for progressive actions during the 2014 Legislative Session. SHOCKER: Volunteer Arrestee Found Guilty

Moral Monday Leader Reverend Barber was found guilty of trespassing and violating building rules. The judge threw out some of the cases, it’s unclear if she was acting as defense council or judge.

WRAL:

Raleigh, N.C. — A Wake County judge on Wednesday found a group of people arrested in April during the first of what became months of weekly protests at the Legislative Building guilty of trespassing and violating building rules.

District Judge Joy Hamilton said that, although she finds some of the rules governing public access to the Legislative Building to be “vague, overbroad and confusing,” state NAACP President Rev. William Barber and 11 others acted in concert to disrupt lawmakers.

Earlier Wednesday, Hamilton said there was insufficient evidence that the 12 protesters posed a threat, so she tossed out the charge of failure to disperse against all of them.

Let’s repeat that: The rules were “vague”. Continue reading

Apex Elects NC Justice Center Employee To Town Council

The Town of Apex has elected Moral Monday protester and NC Justice Center Employee Nicole Dozier to one of its town council positions. If you live in the area, you might have seen her purple campaign signs along the roadside. Purple being the color of a non-partisan middle ground between Republican Red and Democrat Blue. Ms. Dozier is a registered Democrat and is anything but ‘non-partisan’ as I pointed out in October: Continue reading

Southern Workers Assembly Pickets Courthouse

News and Observer reports that today, the Southern Workers Assembly is picketing the Raleigh courthouse in support of the Moral Monday arrestees on trial.

A labor organization is planning to hold protests Friday in half a dozen Southern cities to demand charges be dropped against the more than 900 people arrested in “Moral Monday” protests at the North Carolina legislature this year.

The Southern Workers Assembly plans to picket in front of the county courthouse in Raleigh at noon. The protest continues in Goldsboro and Charlotte that afternoon. Additional picketing is planned in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina and in San Antonio, Texas the same day.

The organization – a network of local unions and organizing committees – is specifically rallying around Saladin Muhammad, a labor leader who is the first Moral Monday protester to be convicted. His attorney, Al McSurely of Chapel Hill, says the conviction will be appealed to superior court.

Southern Workers Assembly’s page goes into detail about Saladin Muhammad who is very invested in unions:

Muhammad, a founding member of Black Workers For Justice, led the organizing as an organizer of the national United Electrical Workers Union (UE) that formed the North Carolina Public Service Workers Union-UE Local 150, which has been a leader in the campaign to repeal the N.C. state ban on collective bargaining rights for public sector workers.

Mr. Mohammad is also invested in Socialism: Continue reading
