#DM7 Article: The Abuse Of A Dream

My latest is up at Da Tech Guy blog: The Abuse of a Dream

—————–

This past week marked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day in the United States. While many took time out to remember the message of Dr. King and his Dream, others took time to assail political opponents and abuse the Dream. At Duke University, an event to commemorate the icon and day turned ugly, degenerating into an arena of insults and slurs hurled at Republican North Carolina legislators. The College Fix:

DURHAM – An observance at Duke University on Sunday meant to honor Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. ended up as a platform to bash North Carolina Republicans and their reform policies.

The event, held inside a chapel at Duke University, began with Duke student and president of the campus Black Student Alliance Marcus Benning citing Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” to criticize the Republican-controlled state Assembly.

“I know why the caged bird sings,” he said. “Because when institutions like the one in Raleigh put up restrictive laws, we begin to sing and fight back.”

Benning’s remarks were in reference to the state’s “Moral Monday” movement, large and disruptive civil disobedience demonstrations at the statehouse, where liberal activists decried the Republican-held majority and its approval of issues such as voter-ID laws and fiscal responsibility on public education.

Read the whole thing. NAACP’s Ben Jealous also got into the act. Paging James O’Keefe…

Another such instance of abuse came from the leader of Moral Monday, Reverend Barber. Barber took aim at South Carolina’s Tim Scott, comparing him to a ventriloquitst’s dummy as the Daily Haymaker documented: Continue reading

Dog Fight At Dog Park Brings In Dog Expert Councilwoman

There was an alleged dog attack in a popular Raleigh Dog park over the weekend. Apparently, two pit bulls went after a Corgi, nearly ripping it’s scalp off.

WRAL:

Raleigh, N.C. — Wake County animal control officers and Raleigh police are investigating the attack of a family pet at a city-owned dog park over the weekend.

Joan Troy says her 13-year-old Welsh Corgi, Lokey, had part of his scalp torn off Saturday when at least two young pit bulls attacked him while at Oakwood Dog Park near downtown Raleigh.

Lokey is recovering at the North Carolina College of Veterinary Medicine.

A Raleigh police spokesman said in a statement Sunday that no charges have been filed and that “no other action has been taken at this point in the investigation.”

City Councilwoman Mary-Ann Baldwin, who heads the council’s Law and Public Safety Committee, said Monday that she’s waiting for a report from animal control and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department before making any determination on whether to look at changing the city’s policies regarding dog parks.

Oh. Mary-Ann is on the case. I’m sure Baldwin will get right on looking at those policies. After all, dog incidents are her area, right? I seem to recall an incident involving her own dog, which she allowed to to pee on the NC General Assembly building as a means of ‘sending a humorous message’. Continue reading

WRAL Report Excludes Obvious NCAE Ties

Well, local media is now on the Walk In Story. That’s good and bad.

Here’s the good:

Teachers taking this thing back are getting a forum with parents in their communities to discuss crucial points of interest that impacts them in their specific schools. Take Holly Ridge Elementary for example. They’ve put up their own independent site taking charge and setting the record straight. Holly Ridge apparently heard the criticisms from parents on the original messaging delivery is owning this their way. GOOD. BRAVO!

Here’s the bad:

Per normal, the local outlets are glossing over some of the details in an effort to be expedient. That’s a nice way of saying covering the rear ends of certain involved parties like the NCAE and their “member led” Organize 2020.

NCAE President Rodney Ellis spent his day in front of the media explaining a non-controversial walk-in on Monday… http://t.co/7LlZxneNdA

Reminder: Send those completed petitions to Larry Nilles, c/o Wake NCAE, 3900 Merton Drive, Suite 100, Raleigh, NC 27609
WRAL does a nice job of completely excluding that association in this report:

@wral Your Walk In video doesn’t mention clear NCAE Organize2020’s social media involvement. http://t.co/33DZXdbxjC pic.twitter.com/POpJLRpJz7 — LL1885 – A.P. Dillon (@LadyLiberty1885) November 2, 2013 Continue reading

Kay’s Campaign Of Hate

Gone Are The Days Of Running On Accomplishments

Some of us saw the emails that came out of the Obama campaign and the DCCC in 2012. The ones that played upon hate and fear using a stack of falsehoods and in some cases, outright lies. Emails that were designed with one purpose of frightening people into funding the Democrats. Well, it’s campaign time again and NC’s Kay Hagan isn’t just taking a page out of that book of fear and hate, she’s using it as a how-to guide. Continue reading

About That Non-Partisan Advocate For Clean Elections…

Have you heard? The NC Voter ID bill (HB 589) is voter suppression! Yeah, ‘suppression’ and/or ‘regressive’ is the new ‘racist’.

Why is it ‘suppression? Because ‘non-partisan advocate for clean elections’ Bob Hall of Democracy NC says so:
