Math Is Hard for #WCPSS’s Tom Benton

Wake County School Board member, Tom Benton, might be a Common Core math victim. Recently Benton told the News and Observer that per pupil spending was still “behind the 2008 level”:

“When we look at the amount of money per student, we are still behind the 2008 level,” said Wake County school board chairman Tom Benton. “The money from the state government has not kept pace with the growing student population.”

Is that true? What does the Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) statistics say?

If you strictly go by DPI’s Fast Fact numbers which ignore the 5 year average capital dollars, then yes it would be. What is also lagging is federal dollars. Local dollars, however, are pretty close. Continue reading

Common Core Cheerleading Group Gets Mult-Million Dollar Gates Foundation Grant

An education non-profit known for recruiting teachers to promote Common Core in the political arena has received a large grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

In June of 2016, Hope Street Group received a grant for $2,650,003 for the purpose of ‘training teachers on policy’ and working on ‘perception improvements’. Continue reading

Civitas Poll: NC Voters Pick Trump Over Clinton In Nearly Every Category

Civitas Institute released its most recent poll results this week. The results show Trump beating Clinton in the Tarheel state in nearly every category. In a question asking who voters would currently be likely to vote for, Trump beat Clinton by four points
The results showed Trump lagging in two main areas — temperament and the ability to respond to an international crisis. Interestingly, voters indicated they believe Trump would handle terrorism better than the Former Secretary of State. In the area of job creation, Trump beat Clinton by 10 points. Continue reading

Charlotte Supt. Clark Halts Moving Forward With Transgender Facilities Policy

Despite House Bill 2, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district (CMS) had every intent of moving forward with plans to implement a transgender facilities policy, however all of that has been put on hold.

CMS Superintendent Ann Clark made a statement on halting the policy, citing the recent Supreme Court ruling striking down a 4th Circuit’s order forcing a school district to create an open bathroom policy. Continue reading

Ethics Complaint Filed Against NC State House Rep. Sgro

An ethics complaint has been filed against North Carolina state house Representative Chris Sgro. The complaint was filed by Napier Fuller, a resident of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The complaint alleges that Sgro, “remains the executive director of Equality NC, and continues to be actively engaged in lobbying for Equity NC via his new role as a member of the NCGA.”. Continue reading
