Why Does Buncombe School Board Hate Kids?
I have to shake my head when it comes to the protectionism of the status quo on vouchers that would benefit low income kids from school boards like Buncombe. They then doubled their dumb by refusing to seek clarification of the Common Core — something that even the NC General Assembly has chosen to do.
After sometimes heated debate, the Buncombe County Schools Board of Education passed a resolution Thursday night expressing opposition to what some members called “vouchers” for private schools.
The board also narrowly voted against passing a resolution to seek clarification of federal Common Core curriculum standards, as well as an assessment of those standards and the financial impact they have.

CCSSO President Atkinson Starts Campaigning Early
NC State Superintendent and President of the CCSSO Dr. June Atkinson recently spent time speaking to the Carteret County Democrat party. Atkinson assaulted the current legislature for teacher pay while conveniently leaving out the role both she and former Governor Perdue played in freezing teacher pay in the first place.
Despite having the highest graduation rate in the history of the state, North Carolina’s public education system needs support to survive the recent wave of changes enacted by the General Assembly, State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson said on Saturday to county Democrats. Voucher Pushback And Protectionism
The pushback on vouchers has been simmering for a while now, but garnered a bit more attention when North Carolina’s top school official, Dr. June Atkinson, decided to make a rather poor analogy:
“With the voucher legislation that we have we could be in dangerous territory as far as taxpayers’ dollars going to private schools,” she said prior to speaking to the N.C. School Boards Association’s Public Policy Conference. “There is nothing in the legislation that would prevent someone from establishing a school of terror.“ – WECT
This sentiment, albeit toned down, was recently echoed by Mt. Airy Board Chair Wendy Carriker. Emphasis added:
Carriker said the voucher program does not require participating private schools to engage in non-discriminatory admission practices and said it requires the State Board of Education to reduce funding to each local board of education in an amount equal to the local board’s per pupil allocation for average daily membership multiplied by the amount of students who receive vouchers and were enrolled in the local board’s schools in the prior semester. – Mt. Airy News
Well the first part of that statement is a bit silly. In other words, how dare a parent choose a school on their own knowing full well what they do or don’t endorse? What kind of ‘discriminatory practices’ could Carriker possibly be talking about? Where’s her evidence that this happens or that a school like that would be included in this program? None. It’s conjecture. She’s seems to be trying to play up the Myrtle Grove Christian school story without actually using the ‘schools of terror’ moniker Atkinson did. Myrtle Grove doesn’t participate in any voucher system nor will it — but that’s besides the point… Schools of Terror, ya’ll!! Continue reading
DPI’s Atkinson Unleashes Fear Mongering Rhetoric On Vouchers
I’m technically in a blog break, but some things are just too incredible not to write about.
Case in point, NC Superintendent June Atkinson’s recent remarks about vouchers. The partisan rhetoric and over the top, fear mongering language are just stunning. Emphasis below is mine.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson offered a pointed critique of the state’s new voucher law during a stop in Wilmington Thursday.
“With the voucher legislation that we have we could be in dangerous territory as far as taxpayers’ dollars going to private schools,” she said prior to speaking to the N.C. School Boards Association’s Public Policy Conference. “There is nothing in the legislation that would prevent someone from establishing a school of terror.” Continue reading

School Vouchers In NC For Low Income Students
In all the manufactured chaos that descended on the NC General Assembly in the last week, an important item in education seemingly got lost in the mix. Governor McCory rolled out a voucher program for low income students called “Opportunity Scholarships”.
The nuts and bolts of the program were in a press release that went out on July 28th: Continue reading
