Black Conservative Pastors Stand Behind #HB2

I’ve recapped today’s press conference held by over 50 pastors in NC who came out in support of Governor McCrory and HB2, while decrying the Obama administration for their comparison of transgender access to civil rights.

They called out Roy Cooper and Rev. William Barber for their positions against HB2. ‘Barber doesn’t speak for us’ they said.

There is also video of the presser, including questions from the media.

A Round Of Applause For The Lt. Governor – VIDEO #HB2

I’d like to have a round of applause for the Lt. Governor. He continues to hit the media on it’s slanted HB2 coverage.

Here’s a clip of the one question that aired in a 30 minute long interview with ABC11.

Will ABC11 air the whole thing?  Not holding my breath.

Charlotte Council Member: We Let Human Rights Campaign Bully Us

As I’ve written before, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is well-funded machine with a fleet of lobbyists. The organization is known for bullying legislators and municipalities as well as strong-arming businesses into acting in favor of their causes.

See the four-part series:

Last night the Charlotte City Council met.  The legislature wants Charlotte to amend its ordinance before they make any moves.

Democratic members of the council wondered in yesterday’s meeting why Charlotte had to be the first to make concessions. GEE, maybe because you CAUSED this mess with your illegal ordinance?

Charlotte Business Journal reports the bullying by HRC; emphasis added:

Council members around the dais, dispensing civic praise and advice such as don’t litter (really) in their closing remarks, made time for a verbal spat when Kenny Smith, a Republican, sought support to put a resolution repealing the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance on the agenda for Wednesday’s budget meeting.

That prompted several Democrats, including LaWana Mayfield and Al Austin, to again question why Charlotte was being asked to make the first overture when the General Assembly passed the law that stirred controversy and cost the city and state tourism bookings, concerts and business growth, including 400 new jobs promised and then dropped by PayPal in Charlotte.

“We passed the ordinance that caused this mess — we let the (Human Rights Campaign) bully us,” Smith told his colleagues.

Human Rights Campaign will continue their tactics. Nothing but repeal of HB2 will suffice:

HRC president Chad Griffin attended the council meeting Monday and told me there are no changes, short of repealing HB 2, that will be satisfactory to opponents of the law.

#WCPSS Policy Changes on Suspensions

As I mentioned last week along with ending the practice of naming a valedictorian and raising the price of meals, Wake County’s School board took aim at changing its suspension policies.

By the way, Rush Limbaugh had fun with the valedictorian bit on his show last week for those who missed it. I’m sure he’d have a field day with this suspension policy change.

Here’s the excerpt from my prior article:

The board also discussed a revision to the student code of conduct. One of the changes arguably allows principals to enact shorter out of school suspensions. The changes affect Level II and III offenses and add time frame guidance. See the proposed revisions and view page 5 for Level II and 7 for Level III for details of offenses.

Just so parents understand what this means, they need to understand what these levels entail.  Level II are things like cheating, bullying, sexual harassment and fighting. Level III are activities like gang activities, drugs, alcohol, guns and bomb threats.

At the time I wrote about the proposed changes, I suspected this suspension policy change had more to do with the lawsuit against Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS) and Wake county sheriff departments than anything else.

I think my suspicion was accurate given the information in the recent article at the News and Observer Ed Blog:

But Jennifer Story, an attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina, was more skeptical as she focused on changes to the due process policy that were also tentatively approved last week.

Story pointed to new wording in the due process policy that says that students will be assigned to an alternative placement following a recommendation of a long-term suspension. Students who complete SCORE, an online-based alternative program, are not recorded by Wake as having had a long-term suspension. Story said SCORE doesn’t provide students with what they need educationally.

“The proposed changes to the WCPSS due process policies have the potential to ultimately reduce, not the actual number of students being suspended, but instead more narrowly the district’s responsibility to publicly report those students as being long-term suspended,” Story said in a statement.

All the changes comes as Wake is the subject of an ongoing federal civil-rights investigation into whether the district’s discipline policies and practices discriminate against African-American students on the basis of race.

DING! DING! DING!  I’m a winner!

The article also has this gem from Board member Jim Martin:

“We want to minimize infractions and maximize education,” Martin said. “That’s not done effectively outside out of school.”

Yes, let’s just remove all consequences for the kids, shall we?  That will surely be more effective.  No, it won’t but hey, remember, this isn’t really about the kids.  This is about getting the Feds out of their hair and appeasing the School To Prison Pipeline crowd.

And what is Mr. Martin basing this statement on? We have no idea.

Martin went on to say they need to ‘reduce recidivism’ and focus on changing the behavior of the students.  Mmmkay. Using terminology like recidivism, which used when referring to prisoners, does not bolster your case, Mr. Martin.

Here’s what I bet happens —  This board will be looking to implement ‘restorative justice’ as a means of making said behavioral changes.

Why do I bet that? Because the article ends with this kumbaya quote from Brenda Elliott the Wake assistant superintendent for student support:

“Research says that increasing lengths of suspension isn’t related to school safety at all,” Elliott said. “There are other things that schools do to help feel students feel safe. The key thing is to provide a nurturing classroom.”

I wonder if Ms. Elliott also knows a major reason parents pull their kids out of a school is because they have concerns about their child’s safety?

Consider this local policy change with the one that was handed down by the Obama administration.  If you think they are unrelated, you’re nuts.

NC Moms Fight Back Against Obama Bathroom Edict – #hb2 #TitleIX

The Obama administration has threatened North Carolina with withholding Title IX funds if the state does not allow biological males to be able to use showers and bathrooms legally designated for females under the state’s HB2 law.

These funds serve the poorest children in the state.  This threat is disgusting.

Recently, the NC State Superintendent of schools basically sided with Obama in this issue. Wake up, parents.

Not only is this administration threatening North Carolina, this threat applies to ALL states. Officials in over 20 states have started pushing back and the biggest conservative caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives has issued a letter to the Obama administration, questioning the legality of this action.

NC’s Rep. Mark Walker is leading the congressional pushback. The majority of NC representatives joined this letter, with some notable exceptions — Rep. Ellmers (NC-02) is an example of those missing. (Update: Hudson has signed on!)

While our Senators, Tillis and Burr, might be sitting on their hands, North Carolina moms are not.

Watch these courageous women stand up for their children against the Obama administration’s incredible overreach into our schools:

Video Description:

A group of North Carolina parents are suing the Obama administration
over its policy that forces public schools to allow transgender students into restrooms, showers, and locker rooms that are opposite from their biological sex. To read more about the lawsuit, click here: http://dailysign.al/1T4qRE8

Sen. Tillis: ‘HB2 is a state law, not my problem’ – #HB2 #NCSEN

The Obama administration has taken aim at our kids.  Under this administrations personal interpretation of Title IX, any child can use any bathroom, locker room, shower or even join any club or team — regardless of their biological sex. It only matters what sex the child ‘identifies as’.

By allowing such access, the door is opened for abuse, assault, rape and exploitation by those who would take advantage of such an open decree. All they have to say are the magic words, “I identify as…”.

HB2 is critical to protecting the safety and privacy of North Carolina citizens, especially children.

Nearly all North Carolina officials have locked arms and are fighting the Obama administration over it.  I said nearly all . While many of our representatives have joined 72 others in opposing Obama’s edict, our Senators are M.I.A.

A concerned citizen wanted to know why our Senators are not stepping up and standing with their state on HB 2, so they asked one of them.

In the response letter below, the Senator tells the citizen he isn’t in the state legislature anymore and HB2 is a state level law, so go talk to their local representation.   Standing with the citizens and officials to defend his state against outright tyranny is not the job of a U.S. Senator, apparently.

Tar FeathersThe letter is also very carefully worded. The strongest condemnation in it is when Tillis calls Obama’s Title IX edict a “novel interpretation”.  Gee, I’d hate to see what kind of language Sen. Tillis uses when he’s really upset.

Dear Senator Tillis, you clearly don’t realize that this is THE fight for the soul of our state.

This is the hill you die on.

This is the moment when act;  you lock arms and yell, NO!

But instead, you just passed the buck.

This is why Democrats win. They act. We react… sometimes.

Here’s the letter:

Thank you for contacting me about North Carolina House Bill (HB) 2.  I appreciate hearing from you.

I understand your concerns about HB 2.  Reasonable people can disagree about these sensitive issues.  Recently, the Obama administration, through the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), filed a complaint against the state of North Carolina.  This federal intrusion into what was essentially a state concern, using a novel interpretation of the language of Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1972 and the Education Amendments of 1972, was un unnecessary escalation of a conflict that I am confident the good people of North Carolina can resolve amicably.

Beyond this recent DOJ action on the matter, HB 2 is a state law, and I am no longer serving in the state legislature.  I would recommend that you contact your State Senator and State Representatives and share your concerns with them.
Contact information for your state officials can be found on the State website: http://www.ncleg.net/.  You can also contact the Governor through his website: http://www.governor.state.nc.us.

As your U.S. Senator, it is very helpful to understand your concerns with for the federal government is operating and your opinions on the important issues that confront North Carolina and our nation.  Please feel free to contact me again if I can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Thom Tillis
U.S. Senator
