Major Civil Rights Group Backs #HB2

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference has come out in support of HB2.

FOX 8:

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Southern Christian Leadership Conference of North Carolina has announced that they support Gov. Pat McCrory on the controversial so-called “Bathroom Bill.”

“This is not the same civil rights violation which the people of color have experienced,” the organization said in a prepared statement.

“This is a religious issue, where the U.S. government is attempting to force the people in North Carolina to change their spiritual and moral beliefs.”

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference is an African-American civil rights organization that had a large role in the American Civil Rights Movement.

Some people might not understand just how significant this is.

To clarify, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established in 1957 and was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as its first president.

The Horror: Rep. George Holding TRAVELED. – #NC02

Folks, there’s a real horror story in the NC-02 race. Brace yourselves.

Rep. George Holding… TRAVELED

Good luck trying to read the documents Rep. Ellmers links to. You’ll need a magnifying glass.

Gee he went to India? That’s a funny thing for the CO-CHAIR OF THE INDIA CAUCUS to do.

Stay ClassyHas Rep. Ellmers been to India? It’s not cheap to get there or to stay somewhere decent even for non-elected officials.

It wasn’t enough for Rep. Ellmers to post a photo to mock a tired man catching a nap on a plane ride. The reactions and comments on that photo should have been a warning to her.

But no, she had to double down.

FLASHBACKS:
Ellmers channels her inner Bob Etheridge: Renee Ellmers arguing more…..”You don’t have any damn facts”

Ellmers sees multiple challengers — and for good reasons.

A Couple of Education Notes In the Proposed #NCGA Budget

There are a few interesting education related nuggets from the proposed NCGA House Committee budget report.

First, Brian Balfour at Civitas notes the pay increases with regard to teachers:

Teacher salaries would see an average increase of 4.1 percent, helping move toward the goal of average teacher pay of $50k

  • The bulk of the salary increases are focused on teachers with 10 to 14 years experience, with a 5% boost
  • Teachers with less than five years experience would receive a $1,000 bonus; teachers with more than 25 years experience would get the $1k bonus along with a 2% raise
  • Teachers with five to nine years would get 4.1 percent, teachers with 15-19 years would get 3.4 percent, and teachers with 20-24 years would get 3.2 percent

The Legislature continues to move the needle for teacher pay, but I am sure the NCAE and Progress Action’s various teacher protest groups will have a cow over this anyway.

Then there’s this interesting bit, which seemingly is supporting the College Board’s monopoly over curriculum and testing (#14, page F7):

 Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate Teacher Bonuses
Provides funding to support a $50 bonus payment to teachers of record for students taking either Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and achieving a certain grade on AP or IB examinations. Bonuses shall be awarded to teachers of Advanced Placement courses for students who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP exams and to teachers of IB Diploma Programme courses for students who score 4 or higher on IB exams.

This program is a recurring cost of a whopping $4,300,000.

Then there’s funding for Teach for America. Which has had their annual $6 million turned into a non-recurring cost. Does this signal that the legislature has wised up to this program’s  high turn over rates and to it being politically motivated? We’ll see.

Superintendent Atkinson Sides With Obama On #HB2

A week ago it appeared Dr. Atkinson gave statements indicating NC Schools didn’t follow HB2 but didn’t clarify further.

This week, she’s clearly chosen a side:

The interview is just over two minutes long. Go listen to it.

In the interview, Atkinson said kids shouldn’t have to use restrooms they don’t identify with and we need to be sensitive to them.

She made no mention in the interview of the fact 504 plans make accommodations for all kinds of unique situations that kids may have with access issues. Perhaps she made those remarks, but NPR didn’t include it. I wrote about this very thing recently at IJ Review.

StuffAtkinsonSaysAtkinson stated that she thinks the courts will say the same thing.

NPR reports: “She believes the courts will ultimately rule that students should be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity.”

She then had the nerve to say she “sides with what is in the best interest of each child”. Invading the privacy and safety of the vast majority of NC school kids is not in the best interest of each child, Dr. Atkinson.

Dr. Atkinson is a known political wordsmith, but she clearly just sided with the Obama administration.

Parents, you have a choice.

Don’t go along with the woman who helped force Common Core onto our kids and teachers and is now seemingly o.k. with to force our kids to go along with the bathroom insanity.

VOTE HER OUT.

OpLGBT DDOS Attack On A NC Big Flop?

Multiple outlets reported that an alleged portion of Anonymous has attacked North Carolina servers over the facilities privacy bill, HB2.

The report was of DDOS attacks on various North Carolina government servers as IB Times notes:

The hacker used a distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) tool to disrupt government websites perceived to be related to the bill. This type of cyberattack sends a tidal wave of traffic towards a single web server with the aim of taking it offline and is regularly used by Anonymous as a method of protest.

The hacker responsible for this operation, titled OpLGBT, has also started a Twitter account to publicise the ongoing attacks. “F*** you North Carolina main govt website [for] making strong anti-gay laws!” ran the first @OperationLGBT tweet.

Apparently, this attack was a flop, much like that of Anonymous’s failed “OP KKK“.

I requested official comment from the North Carolina IT department’s communications director, Michelle Vaught:

Hi A.P.

All of our state websites were operating as normal earlier in the week, when we first saw media reports, and that continues today.

Thanks,

Michelle

Did anyone besides NC ITS notice this alleged attack? It appears not.

WCPSS Board Drops Valedictorian, Raises Meal Prices

Beatings will continueI’m starting to think that the unofficial motto of the current Wake County School Board is, ‘Beatings will continue until moral improves’.

Besides looking at proposals for nearly $2 billion in new construction funding, Wake County Public Schools System Board (WCPSS) voted this week to hike your child’s meal cost.

Unless your child is eligible for free and reduced meals, your child’s lunch and breakfast will now cost 25 cents more. What does that mean for your wallet? Assuming your kid has both breakfast and lunch, that’s a hike of around $90 bucks a year.

K-5 breakfast jumps from $1.00 to $1.25 and lunch from $2.00 to $2.25
Middle and High school breakfast rises from $1.25 to $1.50 and lunch rises from $2.25 to $2.50.  According to a historical chart of pricing presented at the WCPSS board meeting, this is the first hike in five years.

The board rationalized  the hike, saying that Wake needed to keep up with what other districts charge.  Arguably the lack of a hike in recent years might lend that credence. Given that students are rejecting school lunches designed the behest of Michelle Obama and districts are losing money on said meals, I think perhaps recouping funds has more to do with the hike.

The WCPSS board also dropped the naming of a class valedictorian in favor of a more ‘fair’ system that doesn’t single anyone out for excellence.  It’s unhealthy to compete, you guys.

“We have heard from many, many schools that the competition has become very unhealthy,” school board Chairman Tom Benton said in an interview. “Students were not collaborating with each other the way that we would like them to. Their choice of courses was being guided by their GPA and not their future education plans.” – News and Observer

Gee, you mean like every class before them since the dawn of the public school system?

The designation of class valedictorians and/or  salutatorians were voted on and the measure passed. Those honors will end in 2018. Instead, the collegiate style system of using designations, such as ‘magna cum laude’, is being implemented.

The new system will work on a weighted GPA according to the policy documentation:

  • Students with a 3.75 – 3.99 weighted grade point average shall receive the distinction of cum laude
  • Students with a 4.0 – 4.249 weighted grade point average shall receive the distinction of magna cum laude
  • Students with a 4.25 or higher weighted grade point average shall receive the distinction of summa cum laude

Also on the WCPSS board docket was a resolution for “district-wide voluntary desegregation” in which the board pats itself on the back for the creation of magnet schools. According to the resolution, Congress and the WCPSS Board believe magnet schools promote ‘diversity’ and ” achieve voluntary desegregation”.  Yeah, ok. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Also approved were certain contract renewals for Principals, Assistant Principals and admin staff.

The board also discussed a revision to the student code of conduct. One of the changes arguably allows principals to enact shorter out of school suspensions. The changes affect Level II and III offenses and add time frame guidance. See the proposed revisions and view page 5 for Level II and 7 for Level III for details of offenses.

One ray of sunlight made it out of the board meeting. By standing up and fighting back, parents scored a win and kept multiple schools from going to year round calendars.

The schools proposed for year round were Brentwood Elementary, Bugg, Fox Road , Lynn Road, Creech Road, Smith Elementary, East Garner Elementary and Lincoln Heights Elementary located in Fuquay-Varina.

The board has yet to touch the “gender identity” topic.  Parents, be ready when they do.
