WCPSS Board Won’t Believe Their Lyin’ Eyes – #nced #wcpss

At what point will the Wake County School Board finally acknowledge that Common Core is the root of most of the problems district students have?

Would a teacher survey that says,  “only 50% believe that all students can meet grade level benchmarks given sufficient supports” do the trick?

Apparently not.

According to News and Observer, teachers at 28 schools were given a ‘beliefs’ survey and half of them didn’t think their kids could reach do the grade level work.  But some of the board won’t believe their lyin’ eyes.

The reaction from  board member Jim Martin was not to listen to the teachers, but to nitpick the questions:

However, school board member Jim Martin questioned the wording of the questions, saying teachers could honestly believe not all of their students could reach grade level. He said the questions, intentionally or not, appear to be phrased in a way to blame the teachers for lacking belief that their students can do well.

“This puts it all on top of the teacher,” Martin said. “I’m frustrated with what seems to be being done with this belief survey in the real context of the classroom, the complexities of learning where the teacher has responsibility, the student has responsibility.”

So what’s the solution?  Not a peep about Common Core and yet there is the need for more ‘support’, of course.

Shorter: Because of CCSS we now need MTSS.

What is MTSS? The Wake County Schools site explains:

Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, will help our teachers work together more efficiently, use data more effectively and approach their work more strategically. The overarching goal is to improve the quality of instruction that every single child receives.

They want to meet the needs of all students? But, isn’t Common Core supposed to address all students and be uniform?  Why do we need yet another intervention program?

How does MTSS improve instruction?
By analyzing multiple data sets collected on your child – including behavioral data:

MTSS provides guidelines to more quickly identify both challenges and solutions. Timely data – including test scores, suspension rates, attendance and more – are used to help problem solve and identify the levels of supports needed for students.

And where do they get all that data? From PowerSchool probably.

Funny, I thought that actually interacting and trying concepts out with any given child might be a more direct path to ‘solutions’ than analyzing chunks of data.

Of note, most elementary parents (like me) in Wake county still do not have access to PowerSchool. We can’t see the system that MTSS likely pulls most of its data from. That means that Wake county is violating the FERPA rights of thousands of parents and the parents probably don’t even know it.

The district is using MTSS in 28 schools this year. 44 more will use it next school year and so on until the whole district is doing it.

MTSS Is Statewide

This isn’t just a Wake County thing, the Department of Public Instruction has an entire MTSS team, complete with its own Wikispaces page.

“NC MTSS is a multi-tiered framework, which promotes school improvement through engaging, research-based academic and behavioral practices. NC MTSS employs a systems approach using data-driven problem solving to maximize growth for all.”

According to the MTSS Instrument of Readiness document on the Wikispaces page, the vision of MTSS in NC is this (emphasis added):

“Every NC Pre K-12 public education system implements and sustains all components of a Multi-Tiered System of Support to ensure college and career readiness for all students.”

Again, isn’t Common Core supposed to be ensuring college and career readiness for all students right out of the box?

Same Speed CC

Weren’t we told it was far superior to all other standards and that it would allow all kids to learn the same thing?

Yes, it was and yes we were.

Unlike the messaging used to sell the standards to the public, Common Core cannot and will not work for all students.

MTSS is not new either. It’s predecessor is RTI (Response To Intervention).

But MTSS, unlike RTI, it is being used specifically to support Common Core, much like a person with a broken leg uses a crutch. MTSS is the crutch.  Simply put, Common Core will never work without significant changes, adaptations and interventions.

The reality here is that Common Core is driving an entire ‘intervention’ industry in our schools now, and MTSS appears to be the intervention du jour for North Carolina.

I’ll have more details about MTSS. Stay tuned.

Local High School Assault Makes The Smoking Gun. Oh Good.

In case you missed it, an East Wake High School student bit off a large part of another student’s earlobe during a fight on a Wake county school bus ride on March 4th.

18 year-old Amber Monay Romero bit off part of a large portion the earlobe of  16 year-old Emiyah Lane Brown.

The story was picked up by Hollywood tabloid, The Smoking Gun, calling Romero a “Tyson Wannabe Arrested on Chomping Charge”.

Oh good.

ABC 11 has the meat of it:

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Romero was headed home on a bus from East Wake High School last week when another student hit her with a lunch bag. He said that started a fight, and during the fight Romero bit off a large portion of the other girl’s right ear lobe.

Contacted by phone at WakeMed, the other student’s mother told ABC11 that her daughter was in surgery, apparently to repair the ear.

Romero’s mother says her daughter regrets the incident.

“I really truly feel sorry for the family and we, me and my daughter, sincerely apologize and we both hate it that this happened to her. We really did. You know, I’m sorry that this happened. I just want to apologize to her and the family on the behalf of me and my daughter,” Rynee Romero said after her daughter left the courtroom.

Romero’s mother went on to say that her daughter acted out this way because of bullying.

Well Thats Not A HomeschoolUm, who’s bullying who here? A lunch bag swung at you does not mean go you all Mike Tyson on the other kid to the point that kid needs surgery.

As it turns out, Romero’s request to reduce her bail was denied to to another outstanding assault charge in 2014 and an arrest in 2015 for failing to appear in court on the 2014 charge.

According to the location listed for the 2014 arrest, that assault apparently took place at East Wake High.

Here’s an abbreviated look at what Wake Mugshots had:

Name: AMBER MONAY ROMERO
Age: 17
Charge(s)12-15-2014 14-33(A) ASSAULT AND BATTERY

Name: AMBER MONAY ROMERO
Age: 17
Charge(s)03-02-2015 15A-543(C) FTA-ASSAULT AND BATTERY

Name: AMBER MONAY ROMERO
Age: 18
Charge(s)03-04-2016 14-32.4 ASSAULT SERIOUS BODILY INJURY

Reminder: There are groups out there who are pushing the “school to prison pipeline” narrative in Wake county, as I’ve noted here on the blog multiple times. I just recently noted it again for my latest article at Civitas, School Crime Report has Interesting Ups and Downs.

These groups are promoting the removal of School Resource Officers (SRO) and are suing Wake County over the use of  SRO’s in Wake schools because they allegedly abuse their power.

Also, they claim that black students, usually males, are disproportionately disciplined for altercations at school than students of other races.

There are likely a host of reasons any given altercation happens, which these groups fail to note or consider that perhaps black students are committing more of the offenses to begin with. These groups also fail to note that in NC, white students are not far behind them. Check out the 2014-15 school crime report statistics.

It’s interesting to note the silence of these groups on cases like this one, which seem to debunk their narratives.

The Ted Cruz/Megyn Kelly Townhall in Raleigh – #cruzcrew

CRUZ KELLY RALEIGHTed Cruz swung into North Carolina earlier this week and held a couple of events in Raleigh and Charlotte.

The event started as a rally, but quickly change format to a townhall with Megyn Kelly of FOX news.

This article is basically a collection of what I saw and heard.

IMG_0049The turn out was YUGE!

Thousands showed up and some were turned away due to fire code limitations.  This is one shot of the line to get in, which wove back and forth in the church parking area.

I was lucky enough to snag a ticket to the Raleigh event, where I met a lot of great North Carolinians.

Below is a shot of some of the great folks I was standing with, after giving up my seat so a young pregnant woman didn’t have to stand. The young woman’s mom is just to my right in the selfie we took:

Here is a great shot from inside the venue’s main room:

Cruz Crew organizers, like Angie Cutlip, deserve a medal for making this all happen in the bat of an eye:

Here is the full video of the Townhall:

Grange Campaign Attempts To Silence Covil Campaign – #ncpol #ncga #nc20

The Holly Grange campaign has gone full Obama by using lawfare to silence her opponent in the NC-20 House Race, Tammy Covil.

Covil isn’t lying down but instead swings right back by putting the Cease and Desist Letter up on her site:

There is a statement with the images (see below), it’s packed with BOOM.  NC-20 would be lucky to have a fighter like Covil who doesn’t back down. Via  CovilForNCHouse.com:

What does a candidate who claims one of her top priorities as your representative will be to demand accountability from state government do when someone tries to hold her accountable? She hires a fancy New York attorney and threatens legal action. Is this the type of Chicago-style politics we can expect from Holly Grange?

The Special Committee on Benghazi and the hearings that are ongoing are government accountability. This was demanded by the people because Hillary Clinton allowed four brave American souls to be murdered in Libya. We want answers and we’re seeking justice. It is unfortunate that Grange’s company, Osprey Global Solutions, has surfaced in the committee’s investigations of Hillary Clinton’s private email server. The information on HollyGrange.com is 100% factual. There are multiple credible news outlets that have reported the same information, which are sourced and linked, and the statements made by Congressman Trey Gowdy, Chairman of the Special Committee on Benghazi, are pulled verbatim from official Congressional record and linked to the government website that houses his documented letter.

Military serious is honorable and no one, myself included, is question anyone’s service to this Country. What’s questionable are the actions of someone who has long since retired from the military and who, as a private citizen, is using high-level military connections to secure government contracts for profit.

Using previous military service as a shield to insulate yourself from criticism for shady business dealings as a private citizen is disgraceful.

Not just disgraceful, but this Cease and Desist crap flies in the face of Free Speech.
First Amendment anyone?

Also what candidate doesn’t buy up the possible domain name combinations? That’s basic Campaigning 101.  The Grange campaign’s response to being called on the carpet was to take a page from Obama’s Chicago-style political book…

Because.. SHUT UP, Grange explained.

Roy Cooper’s Weird Email On Education

In my inbox:

Roy Cooper for North Carolina

Friend,

My mother Beverly was a public school teacher.

I travel all over this state as attorney general and people say to me, “I want to pay you a compliment.” I think they’re going to tell me I’m doing a great job.

And they’ll say, “Your mom was the best teacher I ever had.”

All of these years later — that’s the power of one educator in the life of a child.

My parents taught me the importance of education from an early age. And, now more than ever, I feel strongly that it’s time to invest in our future. Read my education plan here.

We should increase teacher pay. We should reverse cuts to textbooks and school buses. We have to stop the teacher assistant lay-offs.

Right now, the statistics paint an ugly picture:
• North Carolina is ranked 42nd in the country in teacher pay.
• 62 percent of North Carolina 4th graders are not proficient in reading.
• North Carolina already ranks 46th in the country and last in the Southeast in per-pupil expenditures for public schools.
• Governor McCrory’s proposed budget recommended cutting public universities by $26 million and reduces funding for community colleges by $14 million.

This is unacceptable — and we’re moving in the wrong direction.

Thanks for standing with me.

Roy

The More You KnowLet’s address these claims.

#1 We’re not 42nd in teacher pay, we’re 47th after the General Assembly raised teacher pay by the biggest amount in our state’s history over the last 2 years.

#2 62% of 4th graders are not proficient in reading? Where in the world did he get that number? Is he going by a 2014 WUNC report that references 2013 NAEP scores? Granted our 4th grade reading scores need a lot of work, but they increased  slightly on the most recent NAEP and that is in large part due to Read to Achieve, albeit poorly implemented by DPI, in 3rd grade.

Common Core combined with Read to Achieve is, without argument, a recipe for failure for many kids for a variety of reasons — and these are both policies June Atkinson defends.  I know, I’ve seen the results of this combination first hand with my own child at a 4th grade level for lexile and proficiency, yet the Common Core imposed comprehension level nearly had my kid in Read To Achieve. There is something VERY wrong there.

A question to ask: Is Cooper coming out against Common Core, which is doing damage to kids reading confidence and abilities due to the assignment of inappropriate grade level materials and skill sets?  Is he endorsing the failed policies of Dr. Atkinson?

#3 North Carolina raised per pupil expenditures by $230 last year and was at an all time high since 2011. We also have one of the largest school populations in the country, which means our already big education budget has to stretch farther than other states. Not only that, but there is $70 million in planned increases over two years for textbooks.

Now take into account that the vast majority of NC districts (82 of 115) spend around $9,000 per pupil which is far more than the national average. None spent less than around $7,300.

#4 McCrory’s cuts to higher education represent around 2% of the higher education budget, I believe. Given the hugely bloated salaries like that of the UNC-Chapel Hill athletic director, Bubba Cunningham, who after his 10% increase is not making over $642k, perhaps Higher Ed needs to examine their priorities?

AG Cooper conveniently leaves out that NC is 7th in the nation for state funding of education. Other states take federal funds for such expenditures and are then subject to the US Department of Education for massive reporting, rules and regulations in spending said funds.

The only one moving in the wrong direction is Roy Cooper, who appears to be a victim of Common Core math.

Reply-To: NCPublicSchools@public.govdelivery.com

NCDPI wishes to acknowledge the performance and stability issues with the PowerSchool product over the past few months. We are aware that the current work environment has not met expectations and is operating at an unacceptable level to support the important work you do on a daily basis. Our emphasis has been to push our vendor, PowerSchool Group, LLC, to resolve these issues in a conclusive way to bring the environment up to an acceptable standard. The attached letter from PowerSchool mentions some of these efforts and acknowledges, from their perspective, their failure to provide the tools you require.

NCDPI will continue to push PowerSchool towards making system improvements that benefit and meet the needs of NC users. Thank you for your continued input and feedback; both are powerful tools in making this happen.

Continue to communicate with us.

Powerschool’s initial set up was very costly. Apparently it is continuing to be.

It has also been very glitchy, has been subject to DDOS attacks, hacking, has been called a ‘train wreck‘ and has provided teachers and administrators across the state with no end of frustration.

Powerschool was a Pearson product.  Powerschool selected due to the long-standing relationship with various officials within the Department of Public Instruction, yet Pearson unloaded the product about a year ago by selling it to Vista Equity Partners.

By the way, three years later, as an elementary student parent I still do not have access. This is an ongoing violation of my FERPA rights and that of any other parents who has not been able to gain access.  If that is your situation, please reach out to me.
