Wake Sheriff puts WCPSS School Board on the spot over Bathroom Policy

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison is not amused at the fact that Wake County School System has been dodging clarifying their locker and bathroom policies.

Recently, Harrison called out the school system on their lack of clarity. Harrison threatened to pull his resource officers out unless the situation was addressed.

WRAL:

According to Harrison, a transgender student who was born a boy was seen coming out of the girl’s locker room at West Millbrook Middle School. Harrison said the principal was OK with it.

“She had allowed this person, male that is transgender, going to be a female, to go in there as long as he did not take off his underwear,” Harrison said.

Harrison said he is not OK with it.

“I asked the parents of the girls in the dressing room, did they know that this has been happening? I have no problem with anything going on, other than the fact when the answer came back no,” he said. “We are not letting anyone know about this.”1

The Wake County Public Schools System does not have a policy for transgender students using restrooms or locker rooms. In a statement, a spokesperson for the school system said in part “it is not considering one at this time due to competing and conflicting court cases.”

The article continues to say that Harrison sent a letter to the school district. A reply was sent by Superintendent Jim Merrill, which said that “bathroom and locker room access was left up to school administrators”.

whicheverOver the last year, there have been mixed messages on the subject by the Wake County School Board and the Wake County Schools Communications department.

As I wrote for the Civitas Institute earlier this year,  the Wake County School Board had quietly ‘strengthened‘ their policies to, “include a prohibition of any kind of discrimination based on gender identity,”.  Yet when I reached out to the Board itself, they refused to comment.

Lisa Luten, Director of Communications for Wake County Schools, said, “We do not keep district records of these requests.”

A number of parents have reached out to this site with anecdotes of their son or daughter being put into a similar situation as that documented by Sheriff Harrison in the WRAL article.

None of the parents wished to go on the record for fear of reprisal either by the school or by LGBT groups associated with the assault on North Carolina over the Charlotte Ordinance and House Bill 2.

What this site can note from interactions with parents is that at least three high schools and one middle school in the Wake County School district are permitting access of a student claiming to be transgender into the facilities of the opposite sex.

Wake county parents deserve answers.

CEO’s Who Bashed NC’s #HB2 On Receiving End of Scandals, Discrimination Charges

This past Spring, the Human Rights Campaign enlisted a number of businesses in their economic blackmail campaign intended to force North Carolina into repealing House Bill 2 (HB2).

These businesses ignored that HB2 allows private business to administer their own facilities policies, where as the Charlotte Ordinance forced public and private business alike to ban single sex facilities.

Many of these businesses and their CEO’s called HB2 ‘discriminatory’, including the CEO of Wells Fargo and  PayPal’s Peter Thiel. In the last two days, both of these men are now facing some serious scandals.

The Wells Fargo CEO is facing being docked up to $45 million by the company:

Why the huge swing at the CEO?  Over the sales practices scandal that included, “millions of bogus customer accounts were opened by its bankers in the names of existing customers and outsiders, all to meet relentless sales quotas imposed from above.“.

A start-up that was funded with Federal money and Co-founded by PayPal’s Thiel is now facing hiring discrimination charges:

Perhaps less social justice activism and a little more attention to business and ethics might be a good idea.

#NCGA Candidate Touts Arrest Record In Email Push

A candidate for the North Carolina General Assembly recently sent out an email touting her arrest at a Moral Monday in 2013.

092616-ferrell-mm-email-picJennifer Ferrell (D) is running against Nelson Dollar (R) for the district 36 house seat. In 2013, Ferrell made an unsuccessful bid for an Apex town council seat.

On September 26th, Ferrell sent out an email spotlighting the arrest and included a picture of her holding up an incoherent protest sign (See image).

In the email sent out by Ferrell, she says that, “As a woman, a mother to young children, and a concerned citizen, it was important to me to stand for justice and personal freedom for all.”

The email also says that Ferrell,  “will serve every constituent in every corner of this district with integrity.”

Well, for almost every constituent.

This site was likely lucky to get the email. In August, it was revealed that Ms. Ferrell has blocked nearly anyone who seems conservative on Twitter, myself included.  Her reason was that she

So much for representing all constituents.

Ferrell’s blocking activity even caught the eye of the News and Observer:

The News and Observer noted that Ferrell called it ‘pre-emptive blocking’:

Ferrell defended what she called the “pre-emptive blocking of silent and vocal Twitter ‘trolls.’ ”

Others might call this a self-imposed ‘safe space’ from differing opinions.

911 Transcripts Reveal Orlando Islamic Terror Attack Was About… Islamic Terror. Not LGBT.

On June 12th, Omar Mateen launched an attack on The Pulse night club in Orlando.

Fifty people lost their lives that night and witnesses heard Mateen shout, ‘Allahu Akbar’ and it was learned that Mateen had pledged his allegiance to ISIS. Yet at the time, North Carolina elected officials and media personalities rushed to judgement.

Representatives Chris Sgro (D-Guilford 58) and Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford 57) both blamed House Bill 2 (HB2).

“The way the events played out, the horrific tragedy in Orlando sort of brought out to me the immediate need to repeal House Bill 2 because it’s sort of a hate-filled, shameful piece of legislation that doesn’t reflect North Carolina values,” said Rep. Pricey Harrison, D-Guilford. (WRAL 6/14/16)

“This is a tragedy that all Americans face, but it was a direct attack on the LGBT community,” said Rep. Chris Sgro, D-Guilford. “The only way that we’re going to stop more attacks like that is to stop having bad policy like HB2, stop having negligent rhetoric like we had around it and combat homophobia and trans-phobia in every walk of life.” (WRAL 6/14/16)

WRAL’s own Laura Leslie went on several Facebook rants blaming everyone but Mateen and ISIS.  National media watchdog outlet Newsbusters picked up on Leslie’s posts:

Even the NC NAACP got into the act, sending out an email that said in part, “Do not generalize from a deranged man consumed by hatred, to an ancient religion based on love.”

The NC NAACP email was long and included blaming Donald Trump, as well as “murderous forces of hate”:

“The murderous forces of hate have watched people coming together “against colonial oppression and systemic exploitation. They have witnessed people coming together and challenging racism, sexism, classicism, and the oppression against LGBT people. The forces of hate have looked on helplessly as millions of white and straight and males reject the old forms of domination. People of faith are awakening to unity against ancient lines of race and gender identity.”

911 call transcripts of Mateen that were released this week just how wrong they all were.

“Yo, the air strike that killed Abu Wahid a few weeks ago… that’s what triggered it, okay?” said Mateen, who earlier in the conversation identified himself as a follower the Islamic State terror group.

“They should have not bombed and killed Abu Wahid,” the former security guard declared. “Do your fucking homework and figure out who Abu Wahid is, okay?”

Additionally, Mateen praised one of the bombers of the 2013 Boston Marathon, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, and another domestic terrorist whose name was transcribed as unintelligible in the released transcript.

At other points, Mateen told the negotiator that the United States needed to stop all bombing in Iraq and Syria.
(Washington Free Beacon, 9/28/16)

Will media like the Charlotte Observer or WRAL now be following up on this story? Will Sgro, Harrison, Leslie or the NC NAACP be held accountable for their ghoulish, politically motivated rhetoric?  Don’t hold your breath.

NC Teacher Who Pushed Trump-Hitler Comparisons Resigns in Wake of Investigation

A North Carolina high school English Teacher has apparently resigned in the wake of an investigation into politically charged lessons that included comparing speeches by Adolf Hitler to that of Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

At the Orange County School Board meeting this past Monday, the Board Chair, Dr. Stephen Halkiotis, issued a statement about recent turn of events at Cedar Ridge High School.

Dr. Halkiotis stated that, While our teachers are free to educate students about political issues, when relevant to the curriculum, there is a fundamental difference between educating and advocating; between informing and voicing personal views.   Our policies are clear on these points.

In the statement, Dr. Halkiotis alludes to an investigation that was prompted after this site revealed audio of  one of a series of lessons involving the insertion of questionable and biased political opinions.

The statement also indicates that the teacher in question has resigned.

The Orange County Board’s statement follows an email sent to all employees on the topic, which was previously reported by this site.

Read Halkiotis’ full statement:

“At the outset, I would like to make a few comments about what has now become a public issue on political speech in our school system.  We all know this is a tense topic given the election season.  Please know that our Board of Education has clear policies that prohibit staff from promoting or denouncing a particular candidate or party.   While our teachers are free to educate students about political issues, when relevant to the curriculum, there is a fundamental difference between educating and advocating; between informing and voicing personal views.   Our policies are clear on these points.  As an example, Board policy 7720 prohibits staff from making “ use of an official school position to encourage or to coerce students or other employees of the district to support in any way a political party, candidate or issue.”

The Orange County Schools takes seriously any allegations raised about violations of this policy.   The school system conducts a full and fair review of any such allegations and takes appropriate action based on the results of the review.  While the details of any such review are confidential based on personnel laws, I am permitted to state that the teacher in question made the voluntary decision to resign from her employment with the school district effective today.

Orange County Schools hires and retains teachers that are second to none, who are dedicated to accomplishing the goals of our strategic plan for the benefit our students.  Our teachers day in and day out provide educational opportunities at the highest level  and do so without promoting or denouncing a candidate or party, in compliance with our policies.  If an exception to this high level of excellence and compliance may occur, the school system takes it seriously, conducts a full and fair review, and addresses the matter appropriately.  While this matter has been concluded with the teacher’s voluntary decision, and without any personnel decision on the part of the school district, please know that our district has once again reminded all staff about the importance of following our policy on this topic.”

Soros Funded NC Non-Profits Violating IRS Laws – #CharlotteUprising

Last week, riots erupted in Charlotte, North Carolina after Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed by police.

The protests and riots continued for multiple days and continued on into the weekend.  A curfew was finally imposed by Charlotte’s Mayor Roberts.

Dozens of arrests were logged in relation to these protests and riots, including the apprehension of one protester who shot another protester in the head.

The News and Observer reported on September 22nd that ‘Black Lives Matter’ leaders from Ferguson to Baltimore were “flying in” for the protests that would be taking place over the weekend.

Charlotte police told media that somewhere close to 70% of the arrests made were of individuals from out-of-state.

While the publicly available records at from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office do show some arrestees from out-of-state, the majority of those thus far appear to have given a North Carolina address at the time of their arrest.

Video from both body and police dash cams was released on Saturday, September 24th. This footage follows cell phone video taken by Scott’s wife, which the family gave to The NY Times exclusively.

This past weekend, a website called “Charlotte Uprising” was created, which has a list of protester demands similar to what has been seen in other city occupations of Black Lives Matter.

The Charlotte Uprising website is attempting to raise money for bail and ‘supplies’ through  another North Carolina based organization known as the Durham Solidarity Center.

Bail Fund - DSC PayPal

According to the Durham Solidarity Center website they, “oppose any state repression of dissent, including surveillance, infiltration, disruption, and violence. We agree not to assist law enforcement actions against activists and others.”

The Durham Solidarity Center donation page says that they are a project of another organization known as “Action For Community” which was originallyy called “Action for Community In Raleigh” or ACRe for short.  Both organizations are non-profits.

ACRe’s records show that the organization is also doing business as the name Youth Organizing Institute.

ACRe’s creation documents on file with the North Carolina Secretary of State show the organization was originally founded in 2005 and the registered agent was Attila Nemecz with the point of contact for ACRe is Elena Everett.

ACRe was a 501(c)3 at one point, however the North Carolina Secretary of State lists the organization as “expired”. The expiration date listed is 5/15/2014. ACRe dropped ‘Raleigh’ from it’s name in June 2016 and became “Action for Community”. This incarnation of ACRe is listed by the North Carolina Secretary of State as active.

In 2013, records indicate four board members were added: Elena Everett, Cathy Stanley, Bryan Proffitt and Ben Carroll. The same records indicated Everett was in charge of solicitations.   Of the four listed board members, two have extensive activism backgrounds.

Elena Everett is also affiliated with radical elements including World Workers Party of Durham, Blueprint NC, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, Ignite NC, Youth Organizing Institute, Institute for Southern Studies, Wake Youth Organizing Institute, Southern Vision Alliance, Fair Vote NC, Durham Solidarity Center and the NC Green Party.

Bryan Proffitt is a teacher in Durham, North Carolina who has been involved with a group called Organize202o, which is the Social Justice Caucus of the North Carolina Association of Educators. In June, Proffitt was arrested with Organize2020 members for sitting in the middle of traffic in front of the Old State Capitol building. Proffitt has also been a notable attendee of Moral Monday.

An attempt to locate the required IRS 990 filings for the organization yielded zero results in the ProPublica Non-Profit database.  The IRS Charitable organization database, however, did contain limited information on ACRe.

According to the IRS, ACRe would not have to file a 990 if their income was less than $50,000. Based on the information recorded by the IRS, ACRe reported they received less than $50,000 for years 2009 through 2015.

However, records filed with the North Carolina Secretary of State in 2013 show the group reported over $125,000 in “support and revenue.” Nearly $77,000 of the revenue was in the form of grants.

By tracing ACRe’s tax ID number (20-2921055), multiple funding sources were located:

  • Southern Partners Fund (2012) -$7,500
  • Network for Good (2012) -$8,025
  • Neo-Philanthropy (2013) – $36,600
  • Tides Foundation (2014) – $41,392 for ‘Moral Summer Freedom Program’

Any monies collected by ACRe or it’s sub-organizations after ACRe’s tax exemption status expired on 5/15/14 may be in violation of the law.

There are updates to this article:

Update 2017: ACRe attempted to obtain a new charitable license in 2016, but was denied and an insufficiency letter was issued to them by the Secretary of State’s office. ACRe finally obtained a new charitable license establishing themselves as a 501(c)3 from the NC Secretary of state on Nov. 11, 2017. Among the documents submitted by ACRe for the 2017 renewal was a verification that ACRe was also doing business as “Durham Solidarity Center.”

There is no additional renewal documentation on NC Secretary of State’s website, so it is therefore unclear whether or not ACRe’s 2017 license has lapsed.

It should also be noted that at some point after July 10, 2020, the Durham Solidarity Center took its website offline, including the donation page which Charlotte Uprising had linked to in 2016 for “donations.”)

Update 2019: The dozens of documents once listed on the Secretary of State website for ACRe are inexplicably missing and no longer available. As part of this article’s research,  all documentation was downloaded and this site will make those documents available upon request. Please contact: TheLL1885@gmail.com.

Update 2020: The IRS is missing 990 filings from ACRe for 2016 and 2017. The 2016 filing showing $193,827 in gross receipts can be found at ProPublica.

The board on the 2016 filing lists Durham Attorney Phillip Hausman, Democracy NC staffer Alissa Ellis and Cathey Stanley, a branch organizer for the Communist Workers World Party, who is also a former Carborro schools teacher and as of at least 2020-21, an Orange County middle school social studies teacher.
