Not The Onion: “tensions that often surface in non-violence transformational movements”

The NC NAACP would like you to know they are addressing the “tensions that often surface in non-violence transformational movements“.

Also, the man who shot officers Ramos and Liu is a “mentally insane man”.

See the press release below.

Join us today at 3:00 p.m. in Raleigh to participate in a
Service to address the tensions that often surface in non-violence transformational movements
December 28, 2014
3:00 p.m.
First Baptist Church
101 S. Wilmington St. Raleigh, NC
Today’s service is organized by N.C. civil rights leader Bruce Lightner and will include an address from Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the NC NAACP. Yesterday, millions watched the funeral of Rafael Ramos. A mentally insane man killed Ramos and Wenjian Liu, New York police officers, along with his ex-girlfriend and himself earlier this month. We will gather today to discuss the distinctions between building a peaceful militant Movement against Racism and poverty, as we are seeing grow and build across the country, and heinous acts of terrorist violence by individuals.

#DM7 Article: Kalá Christoúgenna

This is a reposting of my weekly Da Tech Guy Column: Kalá Christoúgenna

By A.P. Dillon

Kalá Christoúgenna!  That’s Greek for Merry Christmas, Da Tech Guy Readers. I’m half-Greek and the holidays seem to pull that side of me onto center stage for some reason. Memories of my ya-ya (grandmother) and her delicious homemade Greek holiday bread and  the tantalizing smell of the seasoned rack of lamb slowly roasting that wafts around the downstairs jump into my mind’s eye at least a dozen times during this time of year. I miss the way ya-ya made the holidays feel but it’s those memories; the sights and smells. It’s those things that have embedded meaning in Christmas just as strongly as any religious significance. I hope I’m creating similar memories for my own children.

As a writer, one hopes their articles are read by a large number of people and are passed around and shared. Since this article falls on Christmas day, the odds many will see this decidedly drop.  That’s alright with me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy if you are out there reading this, but it would make me just as happy today if you are not. In fact, the point of this article is to make you go grab an eggnog and chill with your loved ones.

I’d like to think, or at very least hope, that folks have better things to do today of all days. I know I do — no offense to my boss here. Christmas is about family, it’s about the Lord it’s about a great number of things to a great number of people. For me, it’s about watching my kids eagerly rip into presents and then spending the rest of the day lazily constructing whatever LEGO contraption (or 10) they’ve received while taking breaks to graze on the multitude of delectable tidbits and snacks I’ve lined up for the occasion.

LEGO’s, tales of Curious George and a variety of Wii games are beckoning.  So is a cup of cocoa or glass of something smooth and sparkling.

Go. Now.

Kalá Christoúgenna!

If you enjoyed this article, you should really check out other pieces written by Da Tech Guy’s Magnificent Seven writers and maybe hit that tip jar!

QUOTES OF THE WEEK:

“In his final days on the job, Commissioner King received a letter from Governor Cuomo that Cuomo released to the media. It was not the typical note of ‘thanks for your service and good luck in the new job.’ Instead, the Governor demanded that King, before he leaves, offer candid thoughts on how to significantly change education policy. The governor asked why it is that recent teacher evaluations show 99 percent of teachers ranked highly, while two-thirds of third- to eighth-graders essentially failed the new Common Core-related tests in math and English. “It is incredible to believe that is an accurate reflection of the state of education in New York,” Cuomo said.

The Last #NCSPIN of 2014

NCSPIN Upside DownThe video of the last NC Spin of the year has been posted.

Part truthiness and part chuckle-worthy.

Line up for the final NC Spin of 2014 was:

  • Brad Crone, Political Consultant
  • Becki Gray, Columnist, Carolina Journal
  • Chris Fitzsimon, NC Policy Watch
  • John Hood, President of the John Locke Foundation
  • Tom Campbell, Moderator

Full Video Link.

Highlights and take-aways:

  • Beginning topic: Coal ash was a big deal. It’s bad. It’s a bill citizens will ultimately foot.
  • According to Gray, we’re still a purple state despite holding Republican majorities all over the place.
  • Medicaid is a big deal. It’s a fight about money.
  • Unaffilitated, white voters killed Democrats in the election according to Crone. Especially the rural unaffiliated voters. Possible Subtexts: Racists white voters beat us. How do Democrats further capitalize on low info unaffiliated voters?
  • Fitzsimon nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to salvage the Moral Monday voter suppression theme after John Hood savaged it with … facts.
  • Crone laments that Democrats were ‘beat over the head with Obama‘ all over the state.
  • John Hood tried to break down Common Core opposition. Hood also says the Dept. of Public Instruction is not trusted — also, the sky is blue. He then advocates for taking part of Common Core in the ongoing re-write. This is bad advice; it ignores the standards are copyrighted.  After you listen to what he said, read this and realize his answer on NC SPIN is informed by being part of it.
  • Wainstein report. Fitzsimon calls it a ‘serious black eye’ and that college sports are a ‘charade’.
  • NC SPIN person of the year nominations:
    Gray: Thom Tillis
    Fitzsimon: Phil Berger
Hood: Dan Kane (N&O reporter who broke UNC scandal) and Mary Willingham (Source for UNC story)
    Crone: Thom Tillis

Names from other panelists on past shows:
    Howard Coble

More Protests At Durham Area Mall

Another round of protests at Streets at Southpoint in Durham this past Tuesday according to WNCN:

“at 8:45 p.m., Twitter user @ExodusReign tweeted, “How we dodged the police tonight was brilliant #ShutItDown #durham”

Wait, what?
Dodging police? I thought their beef was with police.

This is the kind of dumb that went on and got dumber as it was tweeted:

Utter self-awareness fail.
It’s not white obliviousness, it’s called laughing at your dumb asses lying on the mall floor.
More dumb below. Clearly Kareem missed where the shooter said he was going to put “wings on a pig” today:

Uh, NYPD protesters were chanting about murdering cops? Stay classy, protesters who crashed the NYPD memorial.

Oi.. vey…Because Old Navy has what to do with protesting the police? (more)

Happy Holidays! Because nothing says Christmas spirit like making your kids attend a protests and hold your crappy sign. What wonderful memories of the holidays these kids will have.

Governor Business Wants Eyes On NC Board of Education

Governor Business inserts another business person into education. I know, you’re shocked. This isn’t the first appointment for Davis by McCrory though. Mayor Pat appointed Davis as Chair, City of Charlotte Privatization /Competition Advisory Committee.  I smell a policy guy.

Davis is taking over for Marcella Savage who has ‘distractions’ involving tax payer dollars going on.  Savage also is on the BEST NC ‘2020 Vision Initiative’ working groups list. Will Davis also be taking over for Savage there? Or perhaps Heath Morrison, since Davis has an affinity for the resigned Superintendent?

Excerpt from Charlotte Observer; emphasis added:

Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board member Eric Davis was named to the N.C. Board of Education on Tuesday, Gov. Pat McCrory’s office announced.

Davis, a senior vice president with Wells Fargo Corporate Real Estate Group, has served on the local board since 2009, chairing it for his first two years. McCrory cited his “strong background in education oversight” leading the state’s second-largest school district.

Education oversight.
We’ll see what that means.

Related – It doesn’t seem Mr. Davis is excited about charter schools as they are too expensive to be efficient. Yet, CMS’s budgeting is apparently efficient?
