CCSSO Pres. Elect’s Statement on NC Move To Drop Common Core
NC State Superintendent and CCSSO President Elect JuneAtkinson was not on hand at the last meeting of the NC General Assembly’s Common Core study committee. It was odd that she would not be present at the event where the findings of the committee on her Common Core Standards were being read. Perhaps she didn’t want to tell the throng of reporters there this was all just a lot of bearing false witness.

Common Core Conflicts Of Interest from Massachusetts to NC
Well, as Common Core and the high stakes testing controversy heats up nationwide, more calls for accountability and of conflicts of interest emerge. We’ve seen Oklahoma Governor Fallin be called out for her dual role with the National Governors Association. This time in Massachusetts.
North Carolina has a similar conflict, as our State Superintendent of Education also serves as President Elect of the CCSSO – one of the two trade organizations responsible for Common Core and who hold the copyright on the standards. Continue reading

Step back to 2009, Barack Obama makes the case for Merit Pay.
Here’s what he said in 2009: “It’s time to start rewarding good teachers, and stop making excuses for bad ones. It’s time to demand results from government at every level. It’s time to prepare every child, everywhere in America, to out-compete any worker, anywhere in the world.” Source: WUNC
Merit Pay for teachers in North Carolina and the removal of tenure has a lot of people talking. Depending on who you ask, you get a different answer. Some say competition motivates continual improvement while others tout cooperation as the way. Continue reading
Occupy Monday Protester To Fill Late Senator Nesbitt’s NCGA Seat
Terry Van Duyn has finally won an election. In 2012, she ran for Buncombe county commissioners in District 3 and lost miserably, coming in dead last out of 4 candidates. She’ll be filling the seat of the late Senator Nesbitt (NC-49) for the rest of what remains of his term. Here’s Van Duyn on the campaign trail in April 2012. She was Occupy Monday before it was all the rage:
