Just In Time For Summer: AG Roy Cooper’s Amazing #HB2 Flip-Flops

Roy Cooper Equality NCJust in time for Summer, North Carolina’s Attorney General has donned a pair of amazing flip-flops.

Yesterday, Governor McCrory’s office issued a statement that NC Attorney General Roy Cooper had changed course and would be defending HB2.

This statement was based on multiple documents, one filed on May 27th by the NC Attorney General’s office.

These documents arguably showed an intent to defend the state that included a motion to extend the response deadline.

Here’s the text from one of them:

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that Special Deputy Attorney General Amar Majmundar of the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office enters his Notice of Appearance as counsel representing Defendant the State of North Carolina.
Respectfully submitted, this 31st day of May, 2016.

ROY COOPER
Attorney General

NCAG Motion for Extension of Time

Later in the day, the Cooper Campaign issued a statement that said the opposite of the legal filings. He will not be defending HB2 and the filings were ‘procedural’.

Judge Orr tweeted back, Cooper can’t have it both ways:

If Cooper is not defending the state, then why hasn’t he filed a motion to that end instead of a time extension?

The McCrory campaign has called for Cooper to resign.

#NCGA Does DPI’s Job Again With Bill On Background Checks [UPDATED]

Earlier this year, North Carolina received an “F” on our teacher screening process in a USA Today report.

Several years ago, and by several I mean SIX YEARS ago, the subject of performing background checks on teachers in North Carolina was suggested, a committee did some work on it and their results were promptly stuck in a drawer by NC Superintendent Atkinson.

DPI, in response to the USA Today report, trotted out this story about being too wrapped up  at the time over the murder of  school board member Kathy Taft. DPI also blamed costs.

Shorter: Atkinson blew it off.

Also, the Board of Education never followed up. Shame on them too.

Since then, North Carolinians have been treated to a continuous flow of headlines about teachers in our state having sex with students or being arrested on one charge or another.

Don’t believe me? Visit Carolina Plotthound’s “Not A Homeschool” collection.

Now legislators are having to do the job DPI should have done — again.

Go read  SB 867, titled Protect Students In Schools, which requires criminal background checks to be performed when a teacher applies for a job and licensing in the state of North Carolina.

UPDATE:
Dear Haymaker, I’m well aware of the section making these checks unavailable to the public. I have inquiries pending and requests for comment submitted to the relevant parties. When I get those responses, I’ll write about it.

In the meantime, acquaint yourself with  Article 7. – The Privacy of State Employee Personnel Records.

Not The Onion: Moral Monday Leader Says Lower Tuition Proposal Is Racist.

Last week I alerted folks that Bully Barber was calling SB 873 racist.  What the bill does is lowers fees and tuition rates for instate students at certain NC colleges, therefore making it more affordable for minorities and poorer students to attend.

Barber managed to bully Sen. Apodaca into altering the bill, by dropping the Historically Black Colleges from the list.  GEE, that’s awesome… said no minority or poor student. Ever.

Read about this nonsense at ABC news who, to their credit, point out this bill would have made college more affordable for many students.

Excerpt:

Though the legislation would have put a college education within reach of more people, it ran into unexpected resistance.

“It hadn’t been pleasant, and for the life of me I can’t understand it,” said Apodaca, who attended Western Carolina. “I would do nothing to cheapen the degree. And we’re just trying to lower tuition costs and help some institutions. But anyway, if they feel that way, that’s fine.”

Supporters of North Carolina’s historically black colleges have long complained that the institutions are shortchanged by the state. The Rev. William Barber, president of the NAACP’s North Carolina chapter, went further in recent days, charging that the proposed tuition cut is “trickery” designed to “drain and bankrupt” the schools.

YES, it’s a HUGE RACIST TRICK to lower tuition rates so kids can afford an education.

Faceplam Stupid

What an absolute moron. The man can’t see the forest for the racist trees in front of him.

What Barber just did was protect the wallets of the university system at the expense of the student.  Clearly, Barber isn’t feeling the Bern.

Hilariously, they argue cheaper tuition will cheapen the degree because the education quality would drop.

Yeah, thinking assumes that degrees today are worth the hundreds of thousands some families shell out of them.

Newsflash snowflakes, your degree is worth the effort you put in, not the dollar figure.  By the same token, universities compete for the student dollar, do you really think they will offer sub-par courses and think they will stay afloat?

UNC Board Of Governors To AG Cooper: Do Your Job Or Pay Our Bills

This past week the UNC Board of Governors meet and discussed HB2.

The board put together a letter, blasting Attorney General Roy Cooper for not doing his job. The letter also demanded that Cooper’s office pick up the legal fees the UNC System will in incur defending itself from the Obama administration’s transgender facilities edict.

Here are some of the key stories covering this, via a Press Release from Governor McCrory’s office:

UNC Board of Governors to Attorney General Roy Cooper: Do Your Job Or Pay Up

“We have a lawyer—he’s called the attorney general… By law he’s supposed to represent us. He’s a constitutionally independently elected office holder—he’s sure expected to do his job. It doesn’t look like that’s happening.”

– Thom Goolsby, University of North Carolina Board of Governors

Raleigh, N.C. – Criticism of Roy Cooper for refusing to defend North Carolina continues to mount as The University of North Carolina Board of Governors voted Friday to ask the attorney general’s office to pick up the system’s legal fees in its lawsuit against the Obama administration. The letter, signed by former Democrat Mayor of Asheville and Board Chairman Lou Bissette, warns that the lawsuit could lead to “unanticipated and potentially significant legal costs” since the Attorney General won’t do his job and represent the university system. Cooper has yet to offer a clear answer on if his office will comply with the Board of Governor’s request to pay its legal bills.

In Case You Missed It:

UNC Asks Roy Cooper To Pay Its Legal Bills Because He Won’t Do His Job: “Although the Attorney General ordinarily represents the University and its officials in litigation, your office has declined to provide legal representation in these matters. As you can appreciate, the University is in need of representation by legal counsel in these matters so that it may continue its operations and focus on its mission of education students and serving the people of North Carolina.” (UNC Board of Governors Letter To Roy Cooper, 5/27/2016)

The Washington Post: “[UNC spokeswoman Joni] Worthington also added, in an email, that the Attorney General acts as outside counsel for all state agencies including UNC unless he declines to do so… ‘I am not aware of another instance in which the Attorney General has declined to represent the University.'” (Susan Svrluga, “UNC asks the state attorney general to pay for private lawyers in fight over transgender ‘bathroom law’,” The Washington Post, 5/27/2016)

The Charlotte Observer: “Cooper has declined to defend state officials, including Gov. Pat McCrory, UNC President Margaret Spellings and the Board of Governors, in HB2 lawsuits filed by the U.S. Department of Justice and the ACLU… ‘This is a serious matter,” board Chairman Lou Bissette said. “It will be extremely expensive. If we find a way out of this lawsuit, it will be cheaper. If it continues, the sky would be the limit.’” (Lisa Sorg, “UNC board wants AG’s office to pick up House Bill 2 legal tab,” Charlotte Observer, 5/27/2016)

ABC11: “Friday, the Board sent Attorney General Roy Cooper a letter requesting that he reconsider his decision. The letter states the University system will suffer from unexpected and significant legal costs as a result of his decision. The BOG is asking Cooper to set aside money in his budget to pay the legal fees.” (Tim Pulliam, “UNC Board of Governors Requests Cooper’s Help On HB2 Legal Battle,”ABC11, 5/27/2016)

Time Warner Cable News: “The UNC Board of Governors sent a letter to Attorney General Roy Cooper, asking him to pay for all of their legal fees associated with House Bill 2. The federal government is suing Governor Pay McCrory, state lawmakers, and the UNC system, challenging the state law that requires people to use bathrooms based on their biological sex… ‘It’s a lot of money when you’re involved in lawsuits with the U.S. Justice Department,” says Board Chairman Louis Bissette.’” (Chris Williams, “UNC BOG Asking Cooper to Pay HB2 Legal Fees,” Time Warner Cable News, 5/27/2016)

WRAL: “‘This has to due with the fact that our university system has been sued, and the attorney general’s job under the law is to provide for our defense,’ said Board of Governors member Thom Goolsby, a former Republican state senator. “He’s refusing to do it, and I think that’s outrageous.'” (Cullen Browder, “UNC asks AG to pay for outside lawyers in HB2 lawsuits,” WRAL, 5/27/2016)

Victim of Childhood Sex Abuse Thanks Gov. McCrory for Supporting #HB2 [VIDEO]

A woman stood up at a meeting on small business development and told the Governor of North Carolina something very personal — admitting she was a victim of childhood sex abuse.

She then thanked Governor McCrory for his strong stance on HB2 and what it meant to her to have a safe space in public facilities.

It took courage to stand up and share what this woman did.  WATCH:

Meanwhile, in the comments on the video posted to the Governor’s Facebook page, people belittled her and abused the Governor using the false narrative that HB2 is about smearing Transgender people as predators.

That false narrative was created by HB2 opponents to counter the reality that the Charlotte ordinance would have granted legal access to any facility a predator wanted.  This is how the Left rolls, people. They attack the victim when it doesn’t fit the narrative.

But then again, this is what we have come to expect from people who believe that acting like petutlant infants and morons in public is a serious form of protest.
