#NCGA Rep. Brandon Repeats Racist Smear Of Common Core Opposition

Rep. Marcus Brandon and his cohorts have continually made references that opposition to Common Core in North Carolina oppose President Obama. The subtext of that reference is if we oppose the President, we therefore must be racists. More shutuppery. More politicizing.

I find it disgusting an elected official would attack parents, students, teachers, student, grandparents, military personnel and other concerned citizens in North Carolina in such a manner, yet he’s done it again:

“Other Democrats accused the Republican majority of pouncing on misunderstandings about the program to undermine President Barack Obama, who supports it.

“We’re using this bill to appease about 20 percent of the population that’s very upset about something that’s been misconstrued,” Democratic state Rep. Marcus Brown said.” – Watauga Democrat

This kind of behavior out of an elected official should be called out on the carpet. Not just the rhetoric, but the ignorance about the role of this administration in this whole fiasco. Continue reading

NCSPIN Re-Runs N&O Op Ed Smearing Parents

Another day, another N&O anonymous Op-ed smearing those who oppose Common Core. More Common Core Shutuppery from our media. Gotta love it.

You can read it at NCSPIN. I won’t send the traffic to the N&O. Here’s my response (below), which I also posted in the comments of the NCSPIN piece.

I’ve added some hyperlinks where relevant.
Begin Comment:

Another Anonymous N&O Op ed likely written by the Chamber of Commerce for them in which they demonize parents, students and teachers who see the Common Core for what it is: a flawed set of experimental standards.

MEMO TO N&O: This isn’t Right or Left. This isn’t the Tea Party. One of my friends involved in this is as Liberal as they come and she LOATHES Common Core. This movement includes people from all walks of life and ideologies and we’re sick of our own news outlets smearing us.

Let me know how that “tea party is racist” label you are attempting to put on your readership works out for ya?

5 Occupy Monday Arrestees Have Prior Records

The first “Moral Monday” saw some arrests and Carolina Plott Hound pointed out two of them had prior criminal records. Plott Hound had found information on “Minister” Rubye Harris with “Assault (2012), larceny, credit card fraud“, and Tyrek Pierce with “Robbery, larceny, false imprisonment“.

Not a single media outlet has reported this beyond New Media like this blog and Carolina Plott Hound. I’m in receipt of information on three more, making for a total of five “Moral Monday” arrestees with prior criminal records. Some of these records contain felonies and include assault. Nice “Moral” Flock you have there, Reverend Barber.

Here are all five: Continue reading

SW Wake News Highlights Teacher Pay Rally, Buries New Principal Hire

The South West Wake News has a big story on the Apex Teacher Pay rally I covered last week. On the left hand side of their site, however, is the news that the Wake Board hired a new principal for Fuquay Varina for $93,625.
Cue a rally in Fuquay in 3…2…1…??? Continue reading

WRAL Finally Publishes Piece On ‘Botched’ Common Core

WRAL finally has an article that talks about parent frustrations with Common Core.

An Iowa woman jokingly calls it “Satan’s handiwork.” A California mom says she’s broken down in tears. A Pennsylvania parent says it “makes my blood boil.”
What could be so horrible? Grade-school math.

As schools around the U.S. implement national Common Core learning standards, parents trying to help their kids with math homework say that adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing has become as complicated as calculus.

They’re stumped by unfamiliar terms like “rectangular array” and “area model.” They wrestle with division that requires the use of squares, slashes and dots. They rage over impenetrable word problems.

Stacey Jacobson-Francis, 41, of Berkeley, California, said her daughter’s homework requires her to know four different ways to add.

“That is way too much to ask of a first grader,” she said. “She can’t remember them all, and I don’t know them all, so we just do the best that we can.” – WRAL 5/15/14
I noticed this article is in the “Lifestyles” section, not the education section. It’s also written by an AP reporter, not WRAL staff. One or two more snippets to drive it home that Common Core is fundamentally flawed and overly convoluted:

“If we are sitting there for 20 minutes trying to do a simple problem, how is an 8, 9, 10-year-old supposed to figure it out?” she said. “It’s incredibly frustrating for the student and the parent.” – WRAL 5/15/14 Continue reading
