NC Supreme Court Race Turning Nasty?

y law, the current Chief Justice of North Carolina has to step down when they turn 72. The current Chief Justice passes that birthday this August, which has prompted the Governor to appoint Justice Mark Martin (who is also a candidate for the slot) to fill the void temporarily until the general election in November. This turn of events has the other candidate on the ticket making some angry sounding statements:

Surreal Moment: Claude Pope and Clay Aiken At Same Event

This past Monday, I attended a Policy Matters USA (PMUSA) meeting in Cary, North Carolina. For those unfamiliar with PMUSA, it’s a group formed by former NC02 Congressional Candidate, Frank Roche. PMUSA is about raising awareness and engaging in discussion on policy issues facing both the nation and North Carolina. Check out their website for more details.

I’ve been a speaker at PMUSA before and talked to their group about Common Core. The format is three speakers who give a short talk and then answer a few questions from the audience. Last night’s line-up included GOP Chairman Claude Pope, author C. Edmund Wright and NC02 Democrat candidate Clay Aiken. Yep, you read that correctly. The GOP Chairman and the Democrat trying to unseat Renee Ellmers spoke at the same event. It was a bit surreal. Continue reading

Gov McCrory Signs NC Up For “Workforce Academy”

Governor Common Core Rebrand has just entered North Carolina into another program created by a non-elected, publicly unaccountable entity. Funnily enough, one of the same non-elected, publicly unaccountable entities that brought us Common Core: The National Governors Association. I spotted … Continue reading

NC Governor McCrory Unveils Operation Rebrand For Common Core (Video)

Last weekend, NC Superintendent Atkinson tipped her hand on the rebrand strategy for Common Core in North Carolina. This week on the same program, NCSPIN, Governor Pat McCrory repeated the same statements.

In the initial part of the conversation, McCrory made a weak dodge on testing should be called out — all major tests are Common Core aligned. Hasn’t his Teach For America Alum and Education Advisor, Eric Guckian, told him that yet?

The host confirmed with Governor McCrory that the Governor has been “a big supporter of Common Core”. McCrory answered, ” I am a supporter of Common Core but I also recognize the testing aspect needs some revision and change.”

McCrory continued and here’s where the cat is now out of the rebrand bag:

“The title of the bill of Common Core says we’re eliminating Common Core. If you read the bill, it doesn’t eliminate Common Core. It reviews Common Core and only the State Board of Education – with Bill Cobey as its chairman – can change Common Core.”

There you have it, folks.

This is the kick off of Operation Rebrand.

Back To School And Student Data Privacy

A few folks have been asking me to address the recently passed and signed NC law dealing with student data collection and privacy matters. That law sprang from SB 815 and which is titled Ensuring Privacy of Student Records.
As people have been attending school orientations, I’ve had several who have expressed to me that they were given no information about student privacy and data. Indeed, I didn’t receive anything separate or specific at our back to school night either. What they and myself were looking for pertains to this section of SB 815: Continue reading
