Ruling Against Opportunity Scholarships For Low Income Kids To Be Appealed
Yesterday, Judge Hobgood ruled against Opportunity Scholarships for low-income and at risk kids. Today, we find that NC Attorney General Roy Cooper will appeal the decision.
N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat who has raised concerns about parts of the Republican legislative agenda, quickly announced plans for his office to appeal, according to Noelle Talley, his spokeswoman.
“Our attorneys believe that this is a constitutional issue that must be decided by the appellate courts,” Talley said in a statement shortly after the ruling. – News and Observer
Wait…For once in recent memory, Cooper is actually doing his job? So, what gives? Either he clearly sees this Judge is correct in his ruling or Cooper thinks this is a way to extend the BlueprintNC style slamming of Republicans on Education. Probably the latter if you that a closer look at the pushback. I’ve said this multiple times before, this is about protectionism of a system and not concern for these kids.

About That General Election Ballot…
A recent set of statements made by the campaign for Judge Ola Lewis regarding ballot order are not ringing quite true. The claim is being made that the Legislature have the NC Board of Elections the right to put Justice Mark Martin’s name first on the ballot.
The authority was given to the State Board of Elections to do so, that part is true.
This claim appears to be framed like an attack on one candidate, that part is not true.
Before this thing turns into a bruhaha, let’s clarify: This is not a change aimed at any one candidate. It applies to all candidates and provides continuity by bringing the General election and the primary election ballot processes into alignment.

NC GOP Judicial Candidate Endorsements
The NC GOP has released its list of Judicial candidates they are endorsing for the upcoming election this November. Below the fold, I’ve included the announcement with the endorsements. These races are important; especially the races for Supreme Court. All the work done by citizens and the legislature can be undone by one activist judge. Consider the Levinson and Martin races carefully.
I’ve written a fair bit about a few of these candidates back during the primary season. For review, here are the links: Continue reading

#DM7 Article: NC AG Refusing To Defend NC Marriage Amendment
This is a reposting of my DaTechGuy weekly column: NC AG Refusing To Defend NC Marriage Amendment
By A.P. Dillon
North Carolina’s Attorney General, Roy Cooper, is taking a page out of the Obama administration’s book in defending the state’s Constitution. Cooper has made a statement that he will no longer be defending North Carolina’s Constitutional Amendment 1 on marriage.
The Amendment 1 ballot measure was born from 3 bills, but SB 514 came out of the fray and went forward. Amendment 1 was passed by over 61% of the vote on the 2012 ballot. Cooper commented he made this decision after a decision by the 4th Circuit that a similar law in Virginia violates the 14th amendment. I guess the 10th amendment didn’t carry as much weight. The 4th Circuit also covers North Carolina. Continue reading
