2013-14 Scores: NC 3rd Grader Reading Proficiency 60.2%?
The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute has an article up at the PR Firm, EducationNC called, “Mapping NC student grade-level and subject proficiency by district, 2013-14”
I’m looking at this article from the perspective of a ‘setting of the stage’ prior to the release of the 2014-15 scores.
There is a breakout by district of reading proficiency percentages based on the Common Core aligned North Carolina EOG (End of Grade) test.
The article is preceded by a big map of the state with sliding menu items to look at various data points. One data point they have under the map is stagnant: STATEWIDE: 60.2%

This is a letter I sent in email recently to Instapundit about an article on Education lobbying and Higher Ed.
While the piece was mainly on Higher Ed/For-profit schools, the ramifications for K-12 can’t be denied. I felt it needed to be shared with a bigger audience, so I am publishing it here on my blog.

Parent Asks DPI: What’s the exit mechanism for EOG?

MORE Controversial Reading Assignments In NC…and Beyond
Over the last six months, I’ve covered the controversial reading assignment of One Crazy Summer dealing with the Black Panthers given to 4th graders in a Wake County school and another one involving The Kite Runner in Buncombe county.
It’s Orange County’s turn.
The book, King and King, deals with homosexuality is being read to 3rd graders. For those without kids, 3rd graders are typically 8 and 9 year old kids.
