Common Core Commission Blasted By Citizen After Final Meeting – #ASRC
As I wrote earlier, the NC Academic Standards Review Commission cannibalized one of their own in yesterday’s final meeting.
One citizen fired off a letter to the commission, sarcastically blasting them for the turn of events that took place.
Here’s the letter:

NC Common Core Commission Turns Cannibal; Scuttles Math Recommendations – #ASRC
Yesterday was the 15th and final meeting of the Academic Standards Review Commission (ASRC). The general consensus going in was that the ASRC knew the math was pretty bad and needed to be replaced. The English Language Arts (ELA) was also deficient in many areas and needed fixing.
Backing up for a moment, it is important to know that various pro-Common Core groups, including WakeEd Partnership, NCAE, SAS, NC Chamber of Commerce, BEST NC, have been attacking the ASRC in the media. In particular, these groups took aim at the proposed recommendations in math.
Jump ahead now to yesterday’s meeting you might be expecting to hear that after 15 months the ASRC put forth their recommendations and they passed them in a vote. However, that’s not what happened.

#WCPSS Has ‘Student Growth’ — in Charters, Homeschools, Private Schools
Earlier in the week I highlighted a narrative about student growth in Wake County Schools.
In that earlier article, I said the following:
“These type of articles also serve another purpose, which is to attack school choice. Meanwhile, they are ignoring the multiple underlying causes of why parents are running for the exits of the public school system.
School safety is a big and increasing concern of parents as is the way the Wake Board and the NC Department of Public Instruction have ignored the parents complaints about Common Core.”

UNC Paper Class’s Underlying Scandal: K-12 Failures
I’ve been waiting for an article to accurately capture what I had considered to be the biggest scandals of all regarding the Wainstein report on UNC’s Paper Class scandal.
That biggest scandal, for me, was the question of how some of these kids even GOT into UNC.
The wait is over.
The Pope Center’s Jesse Saffron and Jenna A. Robinson have produced an article entitled, The Biggest Lesson from the UNC Academic Scandal Has Been Ignored.
The key point from the article is emphasized in the excerpt below.
