#CommonCore NC Action Item: Contact Senate Ed Cmte

Common Core Fighters in North Carolina,

We need to act once again.

keep-calm-and-pass-hb-1061 twitter piIt has come to my attention the Senate Education Committee is possibly trying to avoid conferencing with the House to merge HB 1061 and SB 812. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. SB 812, as it stands by itself, is a weaker bill than HB 1061. The two need to be merged.

To the NC Chamber folks reading this: We know you like SB 812 and we know why.

Section Five? SB 812 has language keeping the Common Core Testing Consortia on the table. Common Core is driven by data, which these consortia require as well. NC is still part of the SBAC and we MUST withdraw or all of this is for not. North Carolina would do far better with a proven, public use set of tests that have no strings attached like the SBAC and PARCC do.

GUEST POST: Are #NCGA Legislators Listening To Parents?

Over the last month, me and the army of moms in North Carolina fed up and concerned with Common Core have been deluging the legislature with letters and calls. One of these fighters has been collecting responses. So far, out of 150 letters sent, she’s seen a small return. Having said that, some of the responses should be noted by parents as to who in the NC General Assembly wants to keep the straps of the Common Core in place over our children’s education and over our state’s sovereignty. While the House shows clear support for getting rid of Common Core in the responses below, the Senate does not.

Below is what was sent to me. I have only altered the text in order to better format it for presentation in this article. If parents out there want a bigger microphone to express their displeasure with Common Core or have received responses back they wish to share, I will happily offer this blog as a place they can do so. North Carolina and The Shared Learning Collaborative

In my article earlier today, I linked to an article by Mercedes Schneider which had a familiar talking point in it. A talking point we’ve heard come out of the mouths of NC Chamber members and legislators who are their allies in forcing Common Core down the throats of NC parents and kids.
At the end of my earlier article, I mentioned that I didn’t even touch on the second half of Schneider’s article which dealt with the Shared Learning Collaborative (SLC) and the sharing of unprecedented student information. This article is the follow-up.

Schneider talks about their state superintendent and his pressuring of Governor Jindal to keep the Core and the PARCC assessments. This combination would result in an unprecedented amount of data collection on students as well as subsequent sharing. Here is the relevant section:

Why Does Gov. McCrory Keep Listening to Eric Guckian?

Common Core is a fundamentally flawed experiment being performed on our students. Proponents have been unable or unwilling to defend the standards from real criticism ranging from the loss of local control, age and developmental inappropriateness to the intrusive data collecting to the fact it’s “higher standards” goal is to get kids into a “non-selective 2 year college”.
Yet, in the face of all of all the complaints, our Governor is still mooning over the standards:

RALEIGH — Gov. Pat McCrory said the Republican-driven bill to repeal the Common Core education standards “is not a smart move,” using his strongest language yet to warn against an effort pushed by conservatives in his own party.

“These are things we need to correct and recognize,” he said, citing concerns with implementation and testing in remarks at a Raleigh meeting of the N.C. Business Committee for Education, a group that supports the standards. “But again, you don’t just throw out the whole thing if you have some minor issues you need to fix. We are trying to get some of the language out of the current bills in which we toss the whole thing out with no replacement.” – N&O

With all due respect, Governor, I’m saying this as someone who voted for you and backs you but… BULLCRAP.

The article at N&O goes on to say the Governor hasn’t said he would veto it or not. Veto it and watch the moms descend on your mansion with bullhorns and signs and trust me — we won’t be accepting of cookies either.

Common Core is not just ‘one minor issue’ but a landslide of problems, the first and foremost being the standards are COPYRIGHTED. Do you understand that Governor? We are at the mercy of two D.C. trade organizations to dictate what we do in our schools. Have you read Appendix B? Have you read my open letter to you? About that Common Core Survey @NCAE’s Jewell Touted…

At the Senate Education Committee hearing on Wednesday, NCAE’s Mark Jewell leapt up with prepared remarks when the surprise opportunity for public comment was given.

Jewell presented his case backed by an ‘independent’ survey by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. That survey is many months old and I didn’t catch the full name at the time I was listening to the audio or I would have posted this earlier. I reached out to the NCAE on Twitter and asked for the poll link and methodology. They did not reply. Perhaps I should have hashtagged it “#TeacherPay.
