See What ‘Just standards’ Looks Like for A Second Grader

The pro-Common Core Mantra: “It’s just a set of standards.”

See what my child has been doing in Common Core math. My kid is good at math, but is being forced to learn multiple strategies regardless of what works best for him. Then he has to ‘explain’ them in writing.

These documents I’m talking about were created by Wake County Schools. This is Common Core aligned curriculum and yes, the kids have to do it the ‘Common Core way’.

Pearson’s Powerschool Redefines Epic Fail In NC

Without argument, Pearson’s Powerschool has been riddled with issues, bugs and complaints. A year later, I am still weeding through the four giant boxes of documents NC DPI sent me on Powerschool after I put in a Freedom of Information Act request.

In my weeding through these documents so far, I’ve got a pile probably 100 pages worth of issues and complaints from education officials, charter schools, superintendents and more. Mind you, I still have one more box to get through.

I don’t have a lot of free time, but this little project just got moved up on the priority scale for me after I had a conversation with my child’s teacher where I learned something rather horrifying things about Powerschool.

Little warning here – you are entering a snark heavy zone.

Want Your Kid’s Transcript? Read The Fine Print.

A reader wrote to me this morning, expressing frustration with NC DPI, Wake County and CFNC over her child’s transcript. Apparently, parents need to read the fine print on the CFNC site (emphasis added): Continue reading

Large District Superintendent’s Clique’s Letter to Pearson

The NC Large District Superintendent Consortium (NCLDSC) has a beef with Pearson and Powerschool. In a letter I obtained through a FOIA on the NCLDSC, it would seem Pearson’s Powerschool is not well thought of by the Large District Clique.

From that FOIA, it would seem that this Large District clique is working closely with NC New Schools and BEST NC. Both of which have promoted the Common Core or have ties to the NC Chamber of Commerce’s attempt to drown out parents on the topic– Hire Standards. More on that later, back to Powerschool.

According to the letter, the reps from Pearson have been rude and the NCLDSC is asking for “no charge” for the 2014-15 school year “as a good faith investment in our long-term partnership”. Continue reading
