NC Governor McCrory Unveils Operation Rebrand For Common Core (Video)
Last weekend, NC Superintendent Atkinson tipped her hand on the rebrand strategy for Common Core in North Carolina. This week on the same program, NCSPIN, Governor Pat McCrory repeated the same statements.
In the initial part of the conversation, McCrory made a weak dodge on testing should be called out — all major tests are Common Core aligned. Hasn’t his Teach For America Alum and Education Advisor, Eric Guckian, told him that yet?
The host confirmed with Governor McCrory that the Governor has been “a big supporter of Common Core”. McCrory answered, ” I am a supporter of Common Core but I also recognize the testing aspect needs some revision and change.”
McCrory continued and here’s where the cat is now out of the rebrand bag:
“The title of the bill of Common Core says we’re eliminating Common Core. If you read the bill, it doesn’t eliminate Common Core. It reviews Common Core and only the State Board of Education – with Bill Cobey as its chairman – can change Common Core.”
There you have it, folks.
This is the kick off of Operation Rebrand.

CCSSO President Dances Around NC Superintendent Reelection Question
More speculation on whether CCSSO President Elect Atkinson will be running for NC Superintendent again. Host Tom Campbell falls all over himself to set her up positively in his interviews with her. Campbell mentions Cash Michael’s dropped the bomb in a past episode that Atkinson wasn’t running again.
During the brief interview segment, Atkinson says she has learned to “live with the turbulence” so our CC June False Witnesskids can have a great education.
Well, much of the recent turbulence has been self-inflicted — Oops, there I go again, bearing “false witness”.

CCSSO President Elect Atkinson Tips Her Common Core Hand?
NC State Superintendent and CCSSO President Elect, June Atkinson, went on local politicalAtkinsonPresElect show NC SPIN to talk about “the move away” from Common Core. In the interview, the same talking points are recycled yet again. It was far easier to do with a host practically feeding her lines — It was almost embarrassing to watch.
Narratives of the interview:
Disruption and constant change
Money we’ve already spent/cost (see my note below the full video clip)
Hey, haven’t we heard these same narratives recently? Yep.
Atkinson’s remarks about “faith” in the State Board of Education take on new meaning — Did Dr. Atkinson just tip her hand? It looks like it, read more…. Continue reading
Michaels on NCSpin: Atkinson won’t run again in 2016
Cash Michaels made the claim on NCSpin ‘s 6/22/14 episode) that State Superintendent June Atkinson won’t run again in 2016. Also in this episode was an minor hissy fit by NC Policy Watch’s Chris Fitzsimon. For a laugh, watch the portion from the 19:45 mark talking about Moral Monday. At the end of it, Fitzsimon has a bit of a meltdown. I laughed.
Watch the Cash Michaels clip below:
[youtube=http://youtu.be/K2UJnREgvtc?t=26m43s]Gee, someone else thinks that too? I’ve noted before that she dismantled her campaign website and dissolved her campaign fund at the NC Board of Elections. There is likely more than a simple wish to retire, the fact she’s losing allies at a rapid rate, has done little to advance the teacher pay agenda or the fact she has the Perdue knack for making ridiculous and embarrassing hyperbolic statements. No, I bet it has more to do with her stealthily sneaking the fundamentally flawed standards in to North Carolina.
What fundamentally flawed standards? Oh that’s right, the majority of citizens still haven’t heard of them after two years of implementation. Or maybe you have heard of Common Core?
As President Elect of the CCSSO (one of the two D.C. trade organizations that hold the copyright on Common Core) she’s made an unholy mess out of it. I doubt many voters out there cared for the way she’s treated them during this fiasco.

NCSPIN Re-Runs N&O Op Ed Smearing Parents
Another day, another N&O anonymous Op-ed smearing those who oppose Common Core. More Common Core Shutuppery from our media. Gotta love it.
You can read it at NCSPIN. I won’t send the traffic to the N&O. Here’s my response (below), which I also posted in the comments of the NCSPIN piece.
I’ve added some hyperlinks where relevant.
Begin Comment:
Another Anonymous N&O Op ed likely written by the Chamber of Commerce for them in which they demonize parents, students and teachers who see the Common Core for what it is: a flawed set of experimental standards.
MEMO TO N&O: This isn’t Right or Left. This isn’t the Tea Party. One of my friends involved in this is as Liberal as they come and she LOATHES Common Core. This movement includes people from all walks of life and ideologies and we’re sick of our own news outlets smearing us.
Let me know how that “tea party is racist” label you are attempting to put on your readership works out for ya?

Arnold on NCSPIN: Your donations will go to push Common Core
Former NC General Assembly member and board member of NC Schools Public Forum went on NCSPIN and talked about Common Core. What we heard was the same talking points coming out of the NC Chamber. In fact, Arnold would go on to say the Chamber will use political donations as a threat in order to force keeping Common Core. Keep reading, we’ll get to the clips from the show.
This set of pro-Common Core talking points used by Arnold is unsurprising for a few reasons. For one thing, Arnold is a board member of Public School Forum NC, which is partnered with the NC Chamber of Commerce. Another reason being that Chambers of Commerce and Business groups in multiple states all bought the Common Core sales job.
The NC Chamber’s Education Foundation has just such an initiative called “Hire Standards”. The NC Chamber’s Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) according to their site and 990 forms. The Education Foundation received $25,000 from the NC Chamber in 2012 according to their Schedule 1 in their 990 tax filing. 2013 is not available yet, but a good guess is the amount is larger. Make no mistake, “Hire Standards” is a who’s who of pro-Common Core, including the owners of the copyrighted standards, The CCSSO — of which State Superintendent Atkinson is now President-elect. Conflict of interest anyone?
