New App Helps Consumers Spend “Conservatively”

A new app launched called 2nd Vote “keeps your spending aligned with your conservative values.” The app tracks corporate spending in an array of issue areas, helping consumers determine if this or that company is somewhere they want to spend their dollars.

“If you’re like a lot of us, you cast your first vote in an elections every couple of years, and wonder if you’re making a difference. Whether you know it or not, you’re casting a vote every day and making a difference, sometimes in support of causes and issues that you would never support on your own. That’s where 2nd Vote comes in.” – 2nd Vote About Page

Ruling Against Opportunity Scholarships For Low Income Kids To Be Appealed

Yesterday, Judge Hobgood ruled against Opportunity Scholarships for low-income and at risk kids. Today, we find that NC Attorney General Roy Cooper will appeal the decision.

N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat who has raised concerns about parts of the Republican legislative agenda, quickly announced plans for his office to appeal, according to Noelle Talley, his spokeswoman.

“Our attorneys believe that this is a constitutional issue that must be decided by the appellate courts,” Talley said in a statement shortly after the ruling. – News and Observer

Wait…For once in recent memory, Cooper is actually doing his job? So, what gives? Either he clearly sees this Judge is correct in his ruling or Cooper thinks this is a way to extend the BlueprintNC style slamming of Republicans on Education. Probably the latter if you that a closer look at the pushback. I’ve said this multiple times before, this is about protectionism of a system and not concern for these kids.

About Those Bus Route Changes… “Walk Zones”

Wake County Schools Bus Schedules have been in flux and have seen changes this year as kids across the county headed back to school. WRAL has reported the following:

RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County students will walk further to bus stops this traditional school year as the Wake County Public Schools System cuts school bus routes and stops to improve the efficiency of its transportation system, the district announced Monday.

School busses will travel 116 fewer routes and make 4,000 fewer stops than last school year, said the district, which also outlined maximum walking distances to bus stops:

Three-tenths of a mile for elementary students
Half a mile for middle and high school students
With 21,000 stops, most students will not be affected, officials said.

According to one parent, this is crap. Kids who live in the “walk zone” are being told they can’t ride the bus. A Wake parent contacted me and told me the following:

Judge Hobgood Rules Against Vouchers For Low-Income And At Risk Kids

Shorter NC Judge Hobgood: Ghetto schools for ghetto kids #ncpol

— T Bradley (@TBradleyNC) August 21, 2014

Judge Hobgood has overruled himself on school vouchers. First he imposed an injunction, then he lifted the injunction pending another hearing and now he’s permanently blocked low-income and at risk kids from attending schools their parents would choose. Continue reading

Core Supporters Crying In Their Talking Points As Teacher Support Crumbles

The support for the Common Core standards has been steadily taking a nose-dive for the better part of the year with the public and parents of school aged kids. Now teacher support of the standards has also dropped by 30% in just one year from 76% to 46% in the latest EducationNext poll.

If you want to read a really great explanation of the drop in teacher support that puts Fordham’s Mike Petrilli to shame with a long list including “lying”, “slander” and “shut up” , go read this article at Huffington Post: How the Common Core Lost Teacher Support . I won’t spoil it with a big excerpt, but here is one of my favorite portions under the section “backpedaling”:

“But the thing about CCSS implementation is that Core boosters got to do everything that they said they wanted to. So if the implementation messed things up that either means 1) they don’t know what they’re talking about or 2) the Core really are that bad.”
