EXCLUSIVE: University of New Mexico ISIS Panel Attendee Speaks Out

The video of an alleged “Pro-ISIS panel at UNM”  has sparked more than a few fires since it went viral online.  I had a few questions of my own regarding the entire incident that took place on April 1st.

After my article ISIS Panel at University of New Mexico was published, I did get some partial answers.

One of the questions from my article was about 45 minutes of video missing from the UNM Muslim Student Associations panel on ISIS.

According to the event sponsors, the camera ‘died’ after filming for about 1 hour and 15 minutes of the event.  I was not able to ascertain what was said during the last portion of the panel, nor was I able to independently confirm the topic of discussion between the panelists and attendees.

No other witnesses at that time had come forward.  However, on April 3rd, a comment was left on my original article:

Michael Guebara says:

In the what should be a 4th video they talk about jihad, there are witnesses to this account, I left before that ( wish I stayed) but lady liberty love your articles, I’d give it a look,

Later that evening an email was sent to Lady Liberty from one of the witnesses Michael Guebara mentioned in his comment.   The email opened with this statement:

Lady Liberty, I am the student who asked the imam about Sharia law. I was also sitting almost right behind Michael Guebara. If anyone challenges Michael Guebara in any way, I will back him up regarding what happened at the ISIS panel event. – Sam

A letter was attached to the email from ‘Sam’.  I spoke in-depth with its author asking if this person wished to remain anonymous or go by ‘Sam’.  This was the reply:

Thank you for your response. Please feel free to use the PDF link publicly. My real name is Samuel Ryu, you may verify this on directory.unm.edu if you wish. I do NOT wish to be anonymous, as this is very important and the Muslim Student Association did not upload the last segment of the proceedings, which has a lot to do with my participation and questions towards the imam…who ended up self-incriminating himself by not refuting the Salafi method.  Another reason is because I publicly quoted a verse in Sahib Bukhari that mentions the “Hour” not being established until the rocks cry out to the Muslims and tell them to kill the Jews. This is important because the “taken out of context” argument can’t be used. In essence, the MSA was trying to protect themselves and censor me as well.

*Note:  Some additional content from the email will be released for the second part of this post including an interview with Samuel Ryu.

I have posted the 3rd video released by the UNM Muslim Student Association again starting at Mr. Ryu’s question to the Imam. At the 14 minute 7 second mark, Mr. Ryu’s question regarding the Salafi’s and sharia law is heard.  The answer was issued, but was cut off.

In his email, Mr. Ryu had this to say regarding Michael Guebara:

I agree with what Michael said, but Michael was not able to present an argument as to why the panel was pro-ISIS. The imam actually came after Michael by having him quote Bible verses from the Old Testament, and making him look bad and having him accept that the Bible was equally violent to the Quran. Michael even said “fair enough” and then left right after he said that. He was not able to defend the Bible or argue his point. This is why my actions that day would support Michaels actions. The missing segment of the proceedings would also show an audience member walking out after telling the imam that he was telling lies about Islam. By only showing Michael’s actions, the MSA put themselves in a position where they look more legitimate.

Here is Mr. Ryu’s letter in its entirety:

Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs also received a letter, as did the Daily Lobo.

Through conversation’s with UNM Muslim Student Association members I was able to confirm the following about the panel:

  • There was a student that asked multiple questions during the 45 minutes that were left in the panel.   The description of that student matches not only the video but the one given by the UNM MSA.  I can confirm this is Samuel Ryu.
  • The topics discussed and the questions were what Sharia says about Jihad,  questions regarding apostasy, the Salafi and the school of thought,  as well as the “Kufr” or non-believers in Islam were also asked.
  • The Imam say to Mr. Ryu, he is “Half a Muslim”
  • An attendee did accuse the Imam of lying about Islam, and that after this statement was made the individual walked out of the room where the panel was being held.

However, I can not confirm the answers the Imam gave other than what was on the third video.

There are two other topics discussed in Samuel Ryu’s letter.

There were other topics in the Ryu letter that I could not get independent confirmation on. Though I had conversations with members of the UNM-MSA, some of those conversations were on the record, while others were not.  I have been asked not to reveal the names of the individuals I spoke with.  I will honor that request.

Though both Michael Guebara’s video and Samuel Ryu’s letter contain opinions,  Mr. Ryu’s letter does contain confirmed information.  There is however an accusation of “editing” regarding the three videos posted by the UNM-MSA that Mr Ryu alleges in his letter.  This can not be confirmed without seeing further video footage of the panel.

This letter is an important piece to the puzzle of the last part of the panel discussions.  If the alleged statements and answers given by the Imam that Mr Ryu cites in his letter are accurate, then there must be further questions asked of the University Of New Mexico Muslim Student Association.

The second part of my interview with Mr. Samuel Ryu will be published soon.  This will also include a statement from Michael Noah Guebara.

Updates will be posted if/when we receive them.

Health Form Created By NC DPI, DHHS Goes ‘Far beyond’ What NC Law Requires

As previously mentioned on this blog, Parents with children entering North Carolina Public Schools for Kindergarten (as well as those entering schools for the first time for any grade) in the state will be required to fill out an invasive “health assessment” form.

Currently, House Bill 13 proposes to make this health assessment part of a child’s permanent record. It will be included in the state longitudinal database system, of which another bill (HB 401) will make that data accessible by multiple state agencies.

Lindalyn Kakadelis, over at John Locke, has posted an an article talking about this exact health assessment. In her article, she chronicles how her own daughter went to enroll her child into Kindergarten and had to deal with this form.

Her daughter refused to sign the form and give parental consent as stated on the form:

“Parental Consent: I agree to allow my child’s health care provider and school personnel to discuss information on this form and allow the Department of Health and Human Services to collect and analyze information from this form to better understand health needs of children in NC.
Signature: _________________ Date:_________”

On this note of “parental consent”, Kakadelis asks, “How many parents realize they are signing away their child’s confidential medical information, and their parental rights?”

Kakadelis also notes that this form does not follow the current state statues, which simply require proof of vaccinations, age and residency:

The NC General Statute 130A-440 requires a health assessment, and General Statute 130A-441 gives the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Public Instruction the authority to create the form to be used. However, the form goes far beyond what the law requires. The form should require evidence that a medical health assessment was completed on the child, not reporting of specific, confidential medical data.

However, this does explain how DPI expects to gain information from the child’s pediatrician as it develops each “child’s profile.” At the February’s State Board of Education meeting, members were given a presentation on the new Kindergarten – Third Grade Assessment. On slide #11, the presentation clearly states the assessment will include data from “teachers, parents, and pediatricians.”

In the excerpt above, Kakadelis points out another serious issue that many parents might still not be aware of.  I blogged about in June, 2014: The Kindergarten Entry Assessment or KEA.

Quick Recap
This “health assessment” form requires a child’s detailed medical evaluation results and a ‘parental consent’ statement allowing NC DPI and NC DHHS to “analyze” your child’s medial record.

This “health assessment” collects data that goes way beyond what is required by state statute.

This “health assessment” seems to be tied to the KEA. The “health assessment” plus the information collected from the KEA represents an unprecedented act of data collection on our children. Data that, according to HB 401, will be accessible by multiple state agencies.

With the help of HB 401 this health data, along with data from other programs like universal pre-k, will allow multiple entities to follow your child from cradle to grave.

By the way, in Wake County Schools, the Kindergarten paperwork is also invasive in some spots. It’s really not their business to ask if your baby was “full-term” or asking about “trauma”, “family stress” or about your child’s personal/social development.  While these might be well-intentioned questions, the answers will likely be turned into data sets.

Action Button What parents can do
1. Download the form below. Send it to your representative or senator. Ask them if they have seen the form that HB 13 is including.

2. Refuse to sign it.

NC Parents, Who Is Teaching Your Child?

Dr. Terry Stoops over at John Locke has an article revolving around a particular teacher who is familiar to readers of this blog: Todd Warren.

Go read Stoop’s article, Teacher promotes truancy, student walk outs.  His assessment of the situation is spot on.

The media in North Carolina has consistently portrayed Mr. Warren as ‘just a teacher’. He’s not.

I’ve countered that several times, including in my recent article on SB 480 which blocks political activity in our public schools.

Relevant excerpt:

The News and Record continued:

Todd Warren, a Spanish teacher at Guilford Elementary School, said the bill is “a solution in search of a problem.”

“I don’t think that anything that Guilford County Schools does now is political campaigning,” Warren said. “What they have done is messages that are education campaigns, but they’re not advocating for anything.”

What the News and Record fails to tell you is that Todd Warren isn’t just some ‘Spanish teacher’.

Warren is a far left socialist, Moral Monday Arrestee, Occupying kinda guy. He is also one of the leaders of the NCAE’s protest arm, “Organize 2020″.

He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named… According To Duke University

Recently a sighting of a ‘noose on a tree’ outside the student union was reported by ‘a student’ at Duke University.

The report from this student came at 2 am on April Fools Day. What was this ‘student’ doing at the student union at 2 am?

I located the original tweet made by one Justin Elliott – the time stamp says “1:58 AM – 1 Apr 2015“:

Just 6 minutes later, it was retweeted by “Patrick Crowley“.

Mr. Elliott has interesting tweets in his timeline. Like this one:

It apparently took a full 45 minutes to remove the noose from the tree. Plenty of time to send a tweet viral.

Duke University launched an investigation and found the person responsible, but won’t name him:

How convenient.

Why no naming of the perpetrator, Duke? The school was all too quick to jump on the Duke Lacrosse team. Also, why isn’t the local media pushing harder to gain access to that name?

The College Fix is on the case digging into Duke’s claim that naming the perpetrator would violate FERPA:

By giving such a flimsy excuse for shielding the perp’s identity, Duke is inviting observers to speculate that the noose-hanging was a hoax by a politically motivated student who wanted to whip up racial outrage in service of a campus agenda. Say, increasing the budget for African & African American studies, hiring more non-white faculty or putting students through mandatory diversity training.

FERPA doesn’t come close to shielding the release of student information that has nothing to do with academics. For example, the attorney general of Illinois just told its state schools that they can’t hide behind FERPA – even at the risk of losing their federal funding – to prevent the release of a database of student email addresses.

Other than habitually denying records request just cuz, Duke’s administration has no justification to withhold such basic information about the perp other than embarrassment that the noose narrative will fall apart.

Hey Parents, You Need To Be “Retrained”.

The arrogance of educators and policy wonks who support Common Core has been pretty well documented over the last few years.

Grandad Learns About CC MemeWe’ve seen proponents slam parents, question parents ‘expertise’ when it comes to their own kids, launch smear campaigns, insult opposition on a regular basis and in general just default calling anyone opposing Common Core a liar.

Remember the Six One Seven video that mocked Grandpa, the elderly veteran? He clearly must need retraining. Just ask instructional Coach, Jennifer Patanella:

“The kids who come to us are a clean slate,” said Jennifer Patanella, an instructional coach with the Rochester public schools. “It’s the adults who have to be retrained.” – Breitbart

Excuse me, what? RETRAINED? I’m sorry, but are parents the dog in this scenario?

Translated: Your kids will be trained to jump through the overly convoluted and effed up Common Core math strategy du jour. Parents? You dummies. Get back in line. Be quiet.

#DM7: From The Mouths Of Our Children To Ed Reformers Ears

The is a reposting of my weekly Da Tech Guy Column: From The Mouths Of Our Children To Ed Reformers Ears

By A.P. Dillon

In New York, the energy from the movement by parents to opt their children out of standardized testing and push back against one-size-fits-all reforms like Common Core is fueling the same fights in the rest of the states.

What is going on in New York and elsewhere is not just a fight about high-stakes tests or Common Core. These two things are only a part of a bigger question: What is the purpose of education?

Our children are answering that question.

Ryan Lotocki of Frontier High School has some answers to that question and shares some of them in the video, “This is Genius“.

Lotocki also asks a question to which Common Core is not the solution:

“What’s the point to learn?
For the thrill.
And Common Core won’t solve anything, so take a chill pill”.

While Lotocki is in high school in New York, a fourth grade girl named Sydney Smoot (from Jeb Bush’s Faux Education Utopia of Florida) gave a speech to a school board. This young lady’s speech about why the current FSA testing must stop was passionate, direct and the audience erupted in cheers at the end.

Also in Florida, an 8th grader tearfully spoke out about high-stakes testing (the FCAT)  in the state and Common Core. Her testimony was positively heartbreaking. Parents shouted out from the audience, “this is ridiculous!” and “you can’t do this to our children!

The video of that 8th grader closes with a few written statements, one of which reads, “And children, the future generation of our nation, are unable to live up to their full learning potential, based on a snapshot test day.

Are you listening, Ed Reformers? Corporations? Education ‘Non-profits’?
