Occupy Monday 6/16/14 Arrests

Occupy Monday Starring Rev BarberHey Hey! Ho Ho!

Arrested at Moral Monday yo!

Before we get into the list of the arrests, catch up on what went on by reading yesterday’s article: Occupy Monday 6/16/14 Edition: Workers ‘Rights’.

 The Moral Monday Union Pals

Yesterday’s Moral Occupy Monday was packed with unions. Of note in attendance was The American Federation of  Government Employees (AFGE).  The attendance of AFGE likely sent chills up the legs of the NC Association of Educators and their protest arm, Organize2020, who desperately want to become a full-fledged union and ultimately kill NC public schools in the process. Take a gander at the “About” page at AFGE to see why; BFF’s with the AFL-CIO etc. Related read: Occupy Monday Agenda Would Cost $7 almost $10 Billion To Fund

Even with the influx of out-of-state union organizers there, attendance was sparse again.

Even Trumka got in on the Occupy act yesterday by tweeting the AFL-CIO’s video promoting civil disobedience:

Not to be left out, the SEIU stood in solidarity with their Occupy Monday brothers and sisters.

The Arrestees & What The Local Media Won’t Tell You About Them

Here are the local Raleigh stories (below) which don’t really name any of the arrestees. ABC11 puts the number at ‘nearly 20’. In fact, it was 20. Nineteen arrested for 2nd degree trespass and one arrested for possession of pot.

WRAL’s report skips any details on the arrested persons for the most part in their report. The report did have this bit on one of them, Amber Matthews:

Earlier, the group gathered for their weekly rally on Halifax Mall featuring AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood and other state and federal union groups calling for collective bargaining rights and a higher minimum wage.

The loud rally began before the Senate began its evening session and continued well into the meeting until General Assembly police asked everyone to disperse.

The noise could be heard in the chamber, with Senators saying they had trouble hearing one another.

One of those arrested Monday was Amber Matthews, a single mother from Greensboro who earns $8 an hour at a fast-food restaurant after four years on the job. Matthews, who has a 5-year-old daughter, said she makes too much to get Medicaid and too little to be able to afford insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

She’s worked for 4 years making the same $8 dollars? This might sound harsh but either I have a bridge to sell you or does this woman lack the brains to ask for a raise?  How, pray tell, does Ms. Matthews making $8 an hour and being a ‘single mother’ does she not qualify for Medicaid or her kid at least qualify for CHIP? $8 an hour, using a 40 hour week, is around $320 a week; roughly $16, 600 a year. That’s well below the family of 2 eligibility thresholds.  Doesn’t really pass the smell test, but of course, WRAL doesn’t dig into it. I’m sure that being arrested will add to Ms. Matthews resume.

WRAL and ABC 11 also both neglect to include the young person arrested for pot possession, but we’ll get to that below.

The Arrests

These are the names of the arrests from 6/16/14. The hyperlinks are relevant information about them. The last one on the list was arrested for pot possession, not 2nd degree trespass. How dumb do you have to be to bring pot to the legislature?  Related Read:  5 Occupy Monday Arrestees Have Prior Records

1 Response to Occupy Monday 6/16/14 Arrests

  1. Jennifer says:

Thanks for doing the job local MSM won’t. Amber Matthews story seems to be similar to that of Crystal Price, the fast food worker arrested in Speaker Tillis’s office a few weeks ago. Crystal has said she has cervical cancer & neither she nor her 2 children have medical coverage. Just as with Amber Matthews, local media ran with Crystal’ s story without questioning any of the details. If the NAACP cared about these women as something more than props you’d think they’d help them enroll in Medicaid or sign up their children for CHIP.
