Why Opposition To Common Core Is Winning

Over at Instapundit, he has a link up to a Reason.com article:
JUNE 26, 2014

K-12 IMPLOSION UPDATE: The Populist Uprising Against Common Core Is Libertarian and It’s Winning.

I left a comment on the Instapundit link which reads:
The fight is really not right or left, but right down the middle. I’ve been in this fight almost two years now in NC — I’ve seen every walk of life & political ideology there is fighting Common Core.
The article is right. We are winning. The indication of that is that supporters are now resorting to passive-aggressively calling Opposition to Common Core racist.
The new talking point is: If you oppose Common Core, you oppose this White House and President.

See how that works? By hinting opposition somehow is based in not liking the President instead of the myriad of actual complaints about the Common Core, the supporters get to imply we’re racists and thereby marginalize anything we have to say.

The supporters aren’t outright calling us racists – yet. They can’t because they know that opposition is coming from all sides on this and is mainly parents and teachers. How do you call parents and teachers racists? Very carefully.

The Reason article has several bits to it that emphasize why Common Core is receiving the monumental pushback that it is. Here are two sections of the article and they get to the heart of it. Emphasis is mine. Continue reading

News and Observer Mentions LadyLiberty1885 Blog on Common Core

The N&O’s education section mentioned the efforts of this blog to kill Common Core dead at the end of an article where Wake School Board member Bill Fletcher was yet again using the ‘politicizing’ strategy to attack opposition and one of the bills repealing Common Core. It also included this quote from another board member, Jim Martin:

“Much of the Common Core is what classic good teaching has been,” school board member Jim Martin said at Monday’s government relations committee meeting. “It’s very much a political overreach. It’s not clear that the folks writing this legislation know what curriculum are.

What a load of crap.
First, Mr. Martin — Common Core, as we’ve been told a million times by supporters like you, is a set of standards and not a curriculum. Are you now insinuating Common Core is a method of teaching? Do the Chamber of Commerce, CCSSO, NGA and Bill Gates know you just went off the biggest talking point?

Second, if you happened to pay attention to the findings of the NC General Assembly’s Common Core LRC, you’d know they are well aware of what a standard is and what curriculum is.

Third, good teaching comes from good teachers regardless of a set of standards. The ability for the teacher to adapt a good curriculum around any given student is what makes for classic good teaching. Common Core does not allow for that kind of personalization and customization. To say it does is a bald-faced lie. By the way, the notion of ‘standards’ is relatively new. The use of standards to adhere to, which requires then to teach to the related test, arguably correlates with the decline in scores over the last few decades.

School board elections often come down to a few dozen votes. The Wake School Board would do well to remember that they have a less than stellar record and that the Chamber doesn’t vote for you, citizens do. I left a comment on the N&O article (below), which I think says it all at this point regarding Mr. Fletcher — and Ms. Kushner or any other Wake School Board member who seems to think it’s a smart move to insult the citizens who vote you in.
Thank you for the mention.

I’m quite appalled at Mr. Fletcher’s politicizing commentary and have called him out on this before.
Twice in fact: http://wp.me/p14vwx-2BI and http://wp.me/p14vwx-2BS

Does Mr. Fletcher think this bill came about by magic and by legislators alone? No, countless letters, phone calls and complaints from moms, dads, grandparents, students and teachers brought about the need for this bill. Apparently Mr. Fletcher has no clue that citizens testified in front of the NCGA’s Common Core Legislative Research Committee and that of the 60 who spoke, 40 spoke in opposition to Common Core. They presented fact based, valid complaints. What Mr. Fletcher has presented is that he is very easily pressured by the Chamber of Commerce and has not done an iota of homework on his own about the standards.

Mr. Fletcher and Ms. Kushner’s strategy of insulting and attacking the voting public who have valid concerns about Common Core is as curious as it is appalling. I wonder how that will work out for them come election time? Continue reading

Mom Pushes Back Against Common Core Style Math In Canada And Wins.

Our neighbors to the North of us have noticed their math scores declining. What is part of Canada doing about it? National one-size-fits all overly convoluted math to the rescue? NOPE. Pretty much the opposite. They are teaching… wait for it… MATH FACTS and the nuts and bolts like algorithms and multiplication tables. Actually, Canada is putting that type of teaching back in.

Keep Reading – Find out about the mom behind the return to common sense math in Canada. Continue reading

GUEST POST: HomeSchoolers Warning About Common Core

The following is a Guest post by a concerned parent and citizen of NC from the Homeschooling community.

———————————–

As a concerned parent, I have been asked to share with you some of my findings in looking into Common Core Standards’ web in NC’s education. Below is just a small amount of what I’ve learned.

Beware the dressing up of a sow!

What do I mean?! Charter schools, since the cap has been lifted, are sprouting up and taking advantage of the Common Core Standards. Continue reading

GUEST POST: Are #NCGA Legislators Listening To Parents?

Over the last month, me and the army of moms in North Carolina fed up and concerned with Common Core have been deluging the legislature with letters and calls. One of these fighters has been collecting responses. So far, out of 150 letters sent, she’s seen a small return. Having said that, some of the responses should be noted by parents as to who in the NC General Assembly wants to keep the straps of the Common Core in place over our children’s education and over our state’s sovereignty. While the House shows clear support for getting rid of Common Core in the responses below, the Senate does not.

Below is what was sent to me. I have only altered the text in order to better format it for presentation in this article. If parents out there want a bigger microphone to express their displeasure with Common Core or have received responses back they wish to share, I will happily offer this blog as a place they can do so. Email me at TheLL1885@gmail.com

To the Representatives who voted for H1061, this is the letter they received. It was a picture of support.

Letter: Gov. McCrory, It Is Not Smart To Continue Common Core

The following is a letter from a concerned citizen of North Carolina, Anthony Bruno, to Governor Pat McCrory. Those of you following this blog have noted that our Governor has his heart in the right place, but the information he is getting on Common Core is coming from those with a vested interested in making sure it stays put.

———————————————————————–

Good Friends,
Gov. McCrory has been disappointing in his continued support of Common Core. I believe he has been influenced by people who know little about it, yet continue to promote it.

This is the reason I went to the governor’s website and completed the form to urge him to support legislation to replace Common Core with a state developed standard recently passed by the General Assembly.

If you agree Common Core is not the best education standard for NC students, please take a few minutes and let the governor know why.

You can also share your opinion with the governor as this link. http://www.governor.state.nc.us/contact/email-pat

The letter I sent. (Below) Continue reading
