New Dem Wake County Commissioners Already Reaching For Your Wallet

MoreWithFourNotOneCentBackWBOC14Just yesterday, I said to gird your wallets.

I said the four Moral Monday Democrats who are now on the Wake County Commissioners board were going to push for a mass transit boondoggle and raise taxes.

Apparently, that call was right on target:

Public transportation is another top priority for the incoming commissioners, including a new transit hub in downtown Raleigh.

“We saw a 2007 plan basically frozen in time, and only recently has it been dug out and have we started to work on refreshing that,” Calabria said.

Durham and Orange counties have moved forward on transit – each implemented a half-cent sales tax to fund projects – but the issue has been a non-starter for the Republican majority on the Wake County Board of Commissioners in recent years. The Democrats pledged the discussion of mass transit will be revived in Wake County.

Hutchinson said he wants to move forward with a half-cent sales tax for transit in the county, noting that it would double the county’s bus capacity in the next 18 months. The other six members of new board also support the plan, he said.

“That’s what we need to move forward on. We need to give our citizens a voice and a vote on their transportation future,” he said.WRAL,  11/05/14, New Wake Commissioners plan to maintain bloc

The 2007 plan was “frozen in time” because of this thing that folks might have heard of called the recession?  There were bigger priorities than a mass transit hub.  As for moving forward with a voice and vote, that sounds like bond referendum talk to me = future tax hike.

I don’t think anyone sees a mere half cent tax increase doing the job either. To make up for that, they can always give Southern Wake the short end of the stick like they received when the 540 extension came through. YAY, Southern Wake is the only section that has tolls! Which is why I, and likely other Southern Wake residents, rarely use it and why it looks like a ghost town speedway.

The dust was blown off mass transit in 2010 with light rail and AMTRAK expansion and then came up again in 2012 with a large price tag and 2013. In 2014, there are still impact studies being done about rail and regularly used roads.

In 2010, a “Union Station” like scenario was proposed that would cost NC around $210 million:

“Federal funds would be sought for 80 percent of the cost, estimated at $150 million to $210 million, with Raleigh and North Carolina splitting the rest.”
News and Observer, 4/23/10, Raleigh will consider new transit proposal

Our AMTRAK capability arguably needs upgrades, but a word of caution on going the direction of light and/or high speed rail: California.

It’s worth noting that a repeating  issue of ‘rural access’ to mass transit (buses) has been consistent since 2007.  It’s also worth keeping in mind that people love their cars. The vast majority of people in Wake county own a car.

North Carolina 2014 Judicial Race Results

Over the last year, I wrote fairly extensively on some of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals races.  The highlighted race amongst those articles was the Supreme Court Justice race, specifically the Chief Justice spot.

That race was between Chief Justice Mark Martin and Judge Ola Lewis. Chief Justice Martin won that race handily with almost 73% of the vote which translated to 1,741,421 votes for Martin to Lewis’s 667,772.

Ervin unseated Hunter, Hudson and Beasley all hung on to their seats. The Beasley race was particularly close with only just over 3,200 votes separating them:

SUPREME COURT ASSOC. JUSTICE (Beasley)
NAME ON BALLOT PARTY BALLOT COUNT PERCENT
Cheri Beasley 1,228,397 50.07%
Mike Robinson 1,225,185 49.93%

UPDATE 11/6/14: It appears the Robinson/Beasley race is headed for a recount.

Gird Your Wallet: Wake County Commissioner Races 2014

Update: Welcome Carolina Plott Hound Readers!

The Moral Monday candidates took the Wake County Commissioner races last night.
Gird your wallets, people.

Frankly, I don’t know what Wake voters were thinking.  These Moral Monday candidates ran under the banner of ‘More with Four’. Well, the ‘More’ in that title is more taxes. When those tax increases, mass transit boondoggles and bond referendums start to come, don’t complain to me. I warned you.

As for the NC GOP. Shame on you. You neglected these races and it look what happened.

These Moral Monday candidates didn’t have enough experience to full a thimble and instead of promoting the Republicans like you did last cycle, you seemingly blew it off.  Now these big government, big spending, social justice crusaders are in control of our taxes.
GOOD GOING.

Excuse the typo in the above tweet. Note to self, don’t type angry.

Across all four races, the party candidate numbers looked like this:
(Dem. in blue, Rep. in Red, Differential in Green)

Election Day One Stop Absentee by Mail Provisional Total Votes
447,562 224,818 15,081 0 687,461
411,554 121,242 18,677 0 551,473
36,008 103,576 -3,596 0 135,988

I have a more detailed breakdown available here.

Here’s how the specific race numbers fell:

North Carolina Midterms 2014

North Carolina Midterm Election Roundup for 2014

Key take-aways:

  • North Carolina made history last night with a new high for midterm voter turn out.
  • Thom Tillis defeated Kay Hagan.
  • Renee Ellmers defeated Clay Aiken.
  • The General Assembly kept a super majority in both houses.
  • Wake County Commissioner races were won by all four Democrats running. Be afraid for your wallet, people. Don’t complain I didn’t warn you about these people when they start to hike your taxes.
  • Chief Justice Mark Martin defeated Judge Ola Lewis.  Other Judicial races were not so good for Republicans.

See my Storify Article, North Carolina Races 2014 , for statistics on these key points.

A breakout of the Wake County Commissioners race will be coming. Stay tuned.

Enterovirus Likely Brought In By Illegals

In October, I asked NC Dept. of Health and Human Services exactly where in North Carolina Enterovirus patients were located and where reports of cases were happening.  I received little back in useful information at that time.

Many, including myself, have speculated that the influx of illegal immigrants had a role to play in the outbreaks of Enterovirus that cropped up in multiple states.  Major media have yet to ask that question. Local media aren’t touching it.

Instapundit has a link addressing this question which infers a correlation between the disease and the depositing of illegal immigrants in the states.

Sharyl Attkisson has been keeping tabs on this outbreak:

According to the latest weekly update from CDC, 167 more people have been sickened with EV-D68 in the past week: a total of 973 patients in 47 states and the District of Columbia. That’s up from last week’s total of 796 people in 46 states.

46 states. Which states?
Via Twitter, Wright Shumate sent an answer:

A few weeks later, a similar response from NC Dept. Of Health and Human Services:

NC’s Dept. of Health and Human Services  set up an Ebola dashboard, but not one for Enterovirus:

The NC map doesn’t label the regions outright. You have to click on them to see the region number. North Carolina has 22 confirmed cases spanning; those cases span the whole state.

Barber Accuses GOP of Race-baiting by Holding Him Accountable To His Own Demands

Reverend Barber’s deck is all race cards.

Now his own agenda and words, when applied to those who follow and support him are also racist. See how that works?

People have to start calling this stuff out.
Read the comments in the article above.
