A Tweet About NC’s Civics and Economics

A tweet from NC’s Superintendent, who is also President Elect of the CCSSO, caught my eye the other morning.

@DianeRavitch Your facts about NC Civics & Econ are incorrect. C&E standards adopted in 2010 & went into effect 2012. Multiple resources

— June Atkinson (@DrJuneAtkinson) December 8, 2014

The tweet from Atkinson is a reply to a story on Mississippi, which doesn’t discuss North Carolina whatsoever. Atkinson has proven to be twitter challenged, so I checked Ravitch’s latest tagged articles for North Carolina.

I thought the Atkinson tweet was a response to the article Ravitch did covering Atkinson’s latest machinations dealing with the hotly contested new APUSH framework (AP US History), but there adoption date of NC’s civics isn’t covered there or in the related article where Ravitch basically re-prints the News and Observer’s smear job. It would appear Atkinson’s tweet is a non-sequitor protestation of something Ravitch never said? YEP. Gee…Our schools are in the best of hands.

News and Observer Uses Smear Attempt To Protect #APUSH

Alright, this is going to be a long article. Get your coffee and settle in.

At the News and Observer, the headline reads, “NC education department used Koch-funded group for proposed history lessons”. Take a moment to go read it, but don’t be sipping that coffee when you do. I have to admit, even for News and Observer, this article was a bad joke. I left a comment on the actual article which I am not going to rehash but has important points in it; you can hit that at the bottom of this article.

Narratives are now News….

People Better Start Paying Attention To ESEA Waivers

For those paying attention to the increasing intrusion and overreach by the federal government into education, the following link should really set your hair on fire:

Hold the Turkey: Federal Government Releases Massive Regulatory Agenda

The following quote is pulled from the section entitled, ““Phasing out” State Authority for Special Education”:

The Secretary will amend the regulations governing title I, part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended (ESEA), to phase out the authority of States to define modified academic achievement standards and develop alternate assessments based on those modified academic achievement standards in order to satisfy ESEA accountability requirements.

NC Senate Bill 880 And The NC Superintendent Position

In June of 2014, Senator Jerry Tillman filed Senate Bill 880 titled the Education Simplification Amendment. It passed the first reading and was sent to the Education/Higher Education committee. See the bill’s history here.
According to the SB 880’s opening text, the NC Superintendent of schools position would be changed significantly from and elected superintendent to a Governor appointed ‘secretary of education’ through a state Constitutional amendment:

That’s a lot of political dodging and weaving to stay in the top Educrat spot in NC, but for how much longer? Speculations are Atkinson won’t run in 2016. I think it would be a fair assessment that Dr. Atkinson is in education the equivalent of a career politician. Given her significant role in bringing Common Core to North Carolina and the subsequent firestorm, perhaps she’ll be heading to a cushy Gates-tied job like former Governor Perdue. Continue reading
