If you haven’t heard of the controversy surrounding APUSH (Advanced Placement US History) before, you will likely be hearing more about it after reading this — especially once you see how it’s affecting politics in one North Carolina race. Continue reading
I’m still on blog break, however there are some items which need to be seen.
One such example is an op-ed by Lt. Governor Dan Forest on the Founding Principles and why opposition of the new AP US History framework is crucial.
With permission from his office, here is the column in its entirety. Continue reading
Just a reminder, the deadline is approaching for sending public comments on the controversial new AP U.S. History framework:
U.S. History Curriculum Framework Public Comment Form
If you wish to propose evidence-based changes to the AP US History Curriculum Framework, please do so from October 1, 2014 through February 28, 2015. After that time, all collected feedback will be reviewed and considered by the AP U.S. History Course and Exam Development Committee. If you have any additional questions, please email email@example.com. Continue reading
This story was hyped up at a time when the new and controversial framework for Advanced Placement U.S. History (APUSH) was going on. Go figure.
Well, that smear-fest appeared to have worked.
Alternate Title: DPI’s coordinated smear campaign to get their way on US History worked. http://t.co/r3N0iTFByx #nced #ncdpi #ncpol #ncga

How many false statements, tea party smears and general bile can one fit into 1 minute and 23 seconds?
Watch @Fitzsimon make an ass of himself on #APUSH with a fountain of smears and rhetoric. http://t.co/SKgFYBQJU2 #nced #ncpol

It’s clear from the moment he opens his mouth, Fitzsimon knows NOTHING about APUSH. Reminds me of the type of crap News and Observer put out on APUSH. Alternatively, Fitzsimon does know APUSH is seeing a radical, leftist swing which is why he politicized criticism of it to death in less than a minute.

A tweet from NC’s Superintendent, who is also President Elect of the CCSSO, caught my eye the other morning.
@DianeRavitch Your facts about NC Civics & Econ are incorrect. C&E standards adopted in 2010 & went into effect 2012. Multiple resources
— June Atkinson (@DrJuneAtkinson) December 8, 2014
The tweet from Atkinson is a reply to a story on Mississippi, which doesn’t discuss North Carolina whatsoever. Atkinson has proven to be twitter challenged, so I checked Ravitch’s latest tagged articles for North Carolina.
I thought the Atkinson tweet was a response to the article Ravitch did covering Atkinson’s latest machinations dealing with the hotly contested new APUSH framework (AP US History), but there adoption date of NC’s civics isn’t covered there or in the related article where Ravitch basically re-prints the News and Observer’s smear job. It would appear Atkinson’s tweet is a non-sequitor protestation of something Ravitch never said? YEP. Gee…Our schools are in the best of hands.

Alright, this is going to be a long article. Get your coffee and settle in.
At the News and Observer, the headline reads, “NC education department used Koch-funded group for proposed history lessons”. Take a moment to go read it, but don’t be sipping that coffee when you do. I have to admit, even for News and Observer, this article was a bad joke. I left a comment on the actual article which I am not going to rehash but has important points in it; you can hit that at the bottom of this article.
Narratives are now News….
