#StopCommonCore Raleigh Event A Big Success!

Today at the NC State Legislature, advocates to stop Common Core came together and made the rounds to talk to legislators about their concerns. Moms, Dads, Grandmothers, Grandfathers and just concerned citizens with no children of their own or with grown children all showed up. It was great to see so many faces from all walks of life and ages, including some children in tow — like my own — come out to take a stand.

FreedomWorks helped organize the event and broke us into groups to go and have talks with various representatives. Each group had at least 10 people in it and there were over at least 10 groups. Not a bad start! The tone was respectful and the conversations constructive. Many of our concerns were already on the radar of the representatives. We made certain that the Common Core Study Bill was a MUST DO for each of them.

Here are a few snapshots from the event:

We also saw Governor Pat McCrory — he was very engaged in his call and didn’t stop to speak with us. My kids were a bit disappointed, Governor. As a taxpayer, I understood you were busy but even a quick acknowledgement would have been nice. Consider this a warning shot — Common Core is not going away and neither are we. Deal with us or don’t at your own political peril.

We weren’t the only ones at the NCGA today. The Durham Democratic Women were out in force … if one can call about half a dozen to be a force. They had signs ranging from ‘Don’t frack with my water’ to signs about cutting pre-k funding and there were, of course, ‘let women choose’ regarding contraception and abortion. Quite a smorgasboard. The camera crews were milling about and none of them seemed interested in filming this poor ladies.

Don’t take my word for it, here are the pictures:

Yes, that was all of them.

She was really excited I was taking her picture. Probably not so excited I think her signs are vague and ham handed.

So, there’s the big difference — Stop Common Core got organized and took the concerns we had right to the representatives while the Democrats sat outside waving a variety of signs with no single main message.

Oh , I’ll also add that no one from our group was arrested. Ahem. Continue reading

NC Dem Meltdown Update: Now In Costume

Yesterday I highlighted the ongoing Democrat and Liberal Meltdown here in North Carolina brought on by changes to legislation being made by the Republican majority General Assembly.

The list included a variety of increasing instances of ‘new tone’ and just downright crudeness. I also mentioned that Planned Parenthood in NC was pushing for protests and action against HB 730 and greatly misrepresented what the bill really said. Sister Toldjah elaborates on the misrepresentation and feminist freak out that went on:

It’s sorta like the Sandra Fluke manufactured “controversy” over “access” to birth control mixing with the religious exemptions issue – except on a local scale, with narcissistic North Carolina “feminists” in the starring role(s). Via the Raleigh News and Observer:

RALEIGH — A bill allowing private employers to refuse to cover contraception in their health insurance plans cleared a House committee Wednesday morning and is headed for a vote of the full chamber.

The legislation would also prohibit coverage for abortions in the new state health insurance exchange that is part of the federal Affordable Care Act, and through the plans cities and counties offer their workers. It also says any health-care provider can refuse to participate in abortions; current law protects doctors and nurses.

The bill is off to a rocky start, as Republicans in a House judiciary committee were not unified in supporting it. Rep. Bob Steinburg, a freshman Republican from Edenton who described himself as a hardcore abortion opponent, said he would only support the bill if the prohibition on contraception coverage was removed.

“It’s almost like we’re stepping back in time,” Steinburg said. “To suggest in the 21st century that women would be prevented from having access to birth control – even as far to the right as I am – is going off the cliff. This is going too far.”

Wellllll, I hope Steinburg’s constituents give him a piece of their mind on his feminist-themed criticism, which greatly misrepresented what the bill actually called for – giving employers the right to EXCLUDE from their health care insurance plans coverage for BC purchases (and abortions). It did not “restrict access.” It just changed who pays for it – not the insurer, but YOU. A self-described staunch pro-lifer shouldn’t be using left wing talking points to advance his argument one way or the other. Perhaps Rep. Steinburg is confused. I dunno.

Indeed. Read the whole thing. The summary and conclusions are pretty spot on.Don’t miss the portion on Rev. Emma Akpan and the commentary Sister Toldjah provides. Nailed it!

Those protesting certainly tried to turn a mole hill into a mountain. WRAL this morning echoed a bit of the foot-stamping:

CONTRACEPTION AND ABORTION: Wednesday morning, the House Judiciary A Committee passed a measure that would have allowed virtually any employer to limit contraception coverage in their employee health plans. Currently, only employers with certain religious affiliations can make such exceptions.

Around 10 p.m. Wednesday, lawmakers stripped the contraception provision out of the bill when it was heard on the House floor. The measure still makes several changes to abortion-related laws. Among the changes, cities and counties would not be able to offer health plans to their employees with abortion coverage. And health plans created by the health exchanges set up by the Affordable Care Act would similarly be unable to offer coverage for elective abortion procedures under the House bill. The measure must be debated and voted a final time today before it heads to the state Senate.

I think the changes here probably had less to do with protests and more to do with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina possibly interceding on grounds such changes would be burdensome to their business and entanglements with Obamacare.

Sister Toldjah also spotted some photos of the protesters that I spied myself on Huffington Post early this morning. Funnily enough, local media didn’t run with the picture – which was taken by Planned Parenthood, naturally. I can’t blame them, it’s fairly embarrassing and runs with the childish theme of recent protests: Continue reading

#Senate2014: In NC – Hagan, Burr and Guns

Gun controls measures lined up for a vote in the Senate this week have split votes from the senators in North Carolina.

Kay Hagan, a Democrat who is up for reelection in 2014, plans to vote for the bill. Hagan repeated claims that she would not support a bill that banned so-called ‘assault’ weapons or high-capacity magazines. Hagan seems to be wanting to have her cake and eat it too by supporting universal background checks with one hand and then opposing magazine and weapons restrictions with the other. Perhaps that split is tied to her past with ‘assault’ weapon style guns going back to her August 25th, 2009 visit to Camp LeJune:

The above picture was found via NC Tea Party. Story to which it was posted can be found here: Call Kay Hagan’s Office Tonight and Tomorrow

On a personal note: I sent a letter to Hagan’s office several weeks ago via my personal email account. It is worth noting, from the obvious form letter reply I received, that Hagan’s words and actions also conflict in her communications with constituents.
On the other side of the aisle

Richard Burr, a Republican who voted yes to cloture on the bill, plans to vote no. Burr cited his opposition to the bill was tied to “Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013” being attached to the Toomey/Manchin bill. Burr also responded to criticism of his vote for cloture, saying that he voted yes in order to allow debate to occur.

A vote could come as early as Thursday on the Toomey/Manchin bill. At the current time, Harry Reid has implied the bill does not have the required votes to pass. Read More: Sens. Burr, Hagan on opposite sides of gun-control bill

A look back to 2009 on Concealed Carry and the NDAA

It’s also worth noting that both Senators voted for the Thune amendment (#1618) to the NDAA (S.1309) in 2009. Summary of the amendment:

To amend chapter 44 of title 18, United States Code, to allow citizens who have concealed carry permits from the State in which they reside to carry concealed firearms in another State that grants concealed carry permits, if the individual complies with the laws of the State.

The vote on the amendment was rejected with by a vote of 58-39 with 3 not voting. Hagan’s yes vote was a little more complex, as it appeared she was doing a 180 on her previous position as an NC State Senator. Read more at NCGA: Senate Bill 33 / S.L. 2003-199 (= H131) Continue reading

Just. Wow.

I’ve seen some lame attempts to stir up attendance at a protest before, this one takes the cake. Continue reading

Common Core Train Wreck (Part II): North Carolina & Beyond

This is part two of what is likely to be a continuing series on the Common Core Standards. This particular post will follow the implementation and related commentary as it applied to my home state, North Carolina. To get up to speed, read Part One: The Common Core Train Wreck: Part One

Common Core Train Wreck (Part II):
North Carolina & Beyond

In 2010, a press release was issued detailing that North Carolina would be participating in adoption of the latest set of education standards – The Common Core Standards (CCS). In the release, mention is made that North Carolina is pleased to be one of the first states to adopt the Common Core, yet the implementation was delayed until the 2012-13 school year, leaving North Carolina as one of the last states to do so. The usual suspects cheered the adoption of the CCS, including Governor at the time, Bev Perdue:

“These new national standards will help make sure our students are ready for college and prepared for successful careers in today’s global economy,” said Perdue. “North Carolina will be able to measure its academic progress against other states and bring some sanity to testing.” Continue reading
