The repeal of Common Core from the North Carolina state statutes and the formation of a standards replacement commission as set out by Senate Bill 812 brought hope to the citizens who had been fighting Common Core. That hope was not without skepticism of a possible rebrand attempt, which has turned out to be justified by the comments made recently by North Carolina’s State Superintendent and Governor. NC Governor McCrory Unveils Operation Rebrand For Common Core (Video)

Last weekend, NC Superintendent Atkinson tipped her hand on the rebrand strategy for Common Core in North Carolina. This week on the same program, NCSPIN, Governor Pat McCrory repeated the same statements.

In the initial part of the conversation, McCrory made a weak dodge on testing should be called out — all major tests are Common Core aligned. Hasn’t his Teach For America Alum and Education Advisor, Eric Guckian, told him that yet?

The host confirmed with Governor McCrory that the Governor has been “a big supporter of Common Core”. McCrory answered, ” I am a supporter of Common Core but I also recognize the testing aspect needs some revision and change.”

McCrory continued and here’s where the cat is now out of the rebrand bag:

“The title of the bill of Common Core says we’re eliminating Common Core. If you read the bill, it doesn’t eliminate Common Core. It reviews Common Core and only the State Board of Education – with Bill Cobey as its chairman – can change Common Core.”

There you have it, folks.

This is the kick off of Operation Rebrand.

NC Budget Signed By McCrory

The North Carolina $21 billion dollar budget has been signed by Governor McCrory.

#DM7 Article: NC AG Refusing To Defend NC Marriage Amendment

North Carolina’s Attorney General, Roy Cooper, is taking a page out of the Obama administration’s book in defending the state’s Constitution. Cooper has made a statement that he will no longer be defending North Carolina’s Constitutional Amendment 1 on marriage.

The Amendment 1 ballot measure was born from 3 bills, but SB 514 came out of the fray and went forward. Amendment 1 was passed by over 61% of the vote on the 2012 ballot. Cooper commented he made this decision after a decision by the 4th Circuit that a similar law in Virginia violates the 14th amendment. I guess the 10th amendment didn’t carry as much weight. The 4th Circuit also covers North Carolina. Continue reading →
