News and Observer Uses Smear Attempt To Protect #APUSH
Alright, this is going to be a long article. Get your coffee and settle in.
At the News and Observer, the headline reads, “NC education department used Koch-funded group for proposed history lessons”. Take a moment to go read it, but don’t be sipping that coffee when you do. I have to admit, even for News and Observer, this article was a bad joke. I left a comment on the actual article which I am not going to rehash but has important points in it; you can hit that at the bottom of this article.
Narratives are now News….

NC #APUSH Update: State Board of Ed Calls Special Meeting
At the October meeting of the State School Board, it was promised that APUSH would be getting a debate. This appears to be happening with this special meeting being for Monday, December 1st.
I am glad to see Larry Krieger presenting as suggested by Ms. Oxendine. NC teacher Ted Dickerson was involved in the new and controversial APUSH framework and was originally mentioned to debate Krieger by Mr. Ford. It would appear the College Board is sending in one of their big guns instead – Executive Director, John Williamson.
It is worth noting that on Tuesday, December 2nd, the North Carolina General Assembly’s Education Oversight committee will be hearing APUSH testimony as well.

NC Taxpayer Group Pushing Back On APUSH Changes
APUSH Advanced Placement U.S. History has a new controversial and arguably Anti-American framework. You can thank Common Core Architect and College Board President, David Coleman. This new framework has serious conflicts with history curriculum in the states. North Carolina is no … Continue reading

College Board Sends Letter To NC State Board Of Ed On #APUSH
The College Board has sent a warning ‘touch-base’ letter to the NC State Board of Education, because clearly the NC State Board of Education must be confused if they are questioning APUSH. Right?

Non-Profit For NC Gifted Kids Promoting #APUSH
One of these days, I am going to form a non-profit to raise awareness of non-profits who are raising awareness of their awareness… or something.
The NC Association for the Gifted and Talented (NCAGT) has started sending emails to educators all over North Carolina. NCAGT is promoting the idea that not allowing for APUSH by iteself to satisfy the Founding Principles Act will “seriously and adversely affect academically and intellectually gifted children in North Carolina.”
No. Just the opposite is true. The new APUSH framework is hotly contested for litany of reasons and is slanted at best. Having this course be the only basis for U.S. history would be a disaster and that would “seriously and adversely affect academically and intellectually gifted children in North Carolina.”
APUSH by itself does not satisfy the Founding Principles Act. The message from NCAGT dismisses this fact entirely. Not surprising since they don’t even have the Founding Principles Act on their legislative section of their website.
The message also says this policy change could come ‘as early as this week’. That’s not true either since the most recent State Education Board meeting just took place and has slated a debate to occur on the topic. Clearly, this isn’t going to happen overnight.
Read the email sent out by the treasurer of NCAGT below.

What NC Citizens Can Do About #APUSH
On Friday, I wrote about how #APUSH Is Going To Get A Debate In North Carolina.
I noted in that article the talking points from State Superintendent Atkinson and Chairman Bill Cobey. These two have no intention of dropping APUSH and their remarks seemingly hint at skirting the Founding Principles Act.
It was also suggested that if they are going to keep APUSH as an option, that a fundamental prerequisite course be put into place. I concur. The State Board of Education should move fast and make History I and History II prerequisites for APUSH.
Bear in mind, it was also noted that somewhere around 20,000 North Carolina students take Advanced Placement courses. Of those, only a small percentage pass. The College Board makes their money regardless. This is something the General Assembly would to well to consider evaluating since they hold the purse strings and direct the Department of Public Instruction to work with the College Board.
As with the Common Core, North Carolina should not be relying on outside entities for materials we have no control over and that have no accountability to our citizens.
