3rd Local Media Outlet Ignores Goodmon/Blueprint NC Connection

The hole Blueprint NC has dug for themselves just got a little deeper. The Director, Sean Kosofsky, has made an attempt to distance himself from the memo. Kosofsky appears to be wildly finger-pointing in any direction but that of him and his organization and stops short of claiming a ‘vast Right Wing conspiracy’:

“On Friday, however, he said Blueprint did not pass on the controversial three-page draft. He suggested it was appended to the other documents by someone hoping to tarnish his organization.” (Raleigh N&O)

From the Raleigh News and Observer: Head of Blueprint North Carolina denies his group sent memo plotting attacks on Republicans

The head of a Raleigh nonprofit group on Friday sought to distance his group from a memo laying out ways liberals could attack Gov. Pat McCrory and other Republican leaders.

Sean Kosofsky, executive director of Blueprint North Carolina, said he misunderstood a reporter’s questions on Thursday about documents emailed by Blueprint’s former communications director to the group’s partners.

he documents, obtained by the Observer from another source, included talking points for progressive policy positions and an issues poll. It also appeared to include three pages of a draft strategy that called for weakening Republican legislators by “crippling their leaders” and working to “weaken their ability to govern.”

Kosofsky said on Thursday that the documents, some from other groups, were emailed to supporters by Blueprint.

On Friday, however, he said Blueprint did not pass on the controversial three-page draft. He suggested it was appended to the other documents by someone hoping to tarnish his organization.

“I misunderstood,” he said Friday. “This is just a bunch of confusion. I think someone has an agenda to deceive people about the connection between these things. … There are things said in there that I might even agree with, but it’s just not us.”

He said the three-page draft was circulated in December at a meeting of more than 50 progressive groups. He’s not sure who drafted it.

The article goes on to mention the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the big chunk of money they give Blueprint NC, but makes no mention of the local media mogul and his AJ Fletcher Foundation that has also sent Blueprint NC funding– Jim Goodmon, owner of WRAL.

This morning, ABC11’s story on Blueprint NC also left out the connection. I tweeted to the author of the story, Jon Camp, questioning the omission:

@abc11joncamp Really light on the details links to external docs aren’t ya? How about @wral connection to funding? abclocal.go.com/wtvd/story?sec…

— LL1885 (@LadyLiberty1885) February 23, 2013

I also tweeted to the News and Observer asking a similar question. I will update this post with any responses I receive from any local media entities I have contacted about the story. As of yet, WRAL has still not responded.

@WRAL Silent On Internal Link To Blueprint NC’s Attack Memo

As I previously posted, a non-profit in NC named Blueprint NC has been caught distributing a memo with talking points on how to attack Conservatives, the GOP and Governor Pat McCory. What has not been so publicized is the link between this progressive group and the local media – specifically local Raleigh station, WRAL.

Let’s review what Blueprint NC advocates:

• “Crippl(e) their leaders (GovMcCrory, House Speaker Tillis, Senate leader Berger etc.)”

• “Eviscerate the leadership and weaken their ability to govern.”

• “Pressure McCrory at every public event.”

• “Slam him when he contradicts his promises.”

Pay attention to the last item. Funny how WRAL now displays its shiny new McCrory Promise Tracker on their site. I re-iterate from my earlier post:

After my initial reading of the article, the last one struck me as familiar – WRAL’s shiny new “Promise Tracker“. When this promise tracker came out, I questioned WRAL on why there wasn’t a Bev Perdue tracker. This is the answer I received was in a Private message on Twitter. I tweeted them publicly and they replied PRIVATELY. Which means they had to follow me and unfollow me just to send this message:

They didn’t have the resources to have someone jot down and post Bev Perdue’s promises to their site? What kind of resources would that take exactly? A pen? Some paper? Ethics?

As I mentioned above, WRAL has a story on their site about the Blueprint NC memo leak. It is void of any link to their own owner, Jim Goodmon. Civitas already has a response up; citing :

The WRAL reporter left out the very deep connections WRAL has with BlueprintNC through its owner Jim Goodmon, donations and former employees. The AJ Fletcher Foundation has given $35,000 to BlueprintNC and $380,000 to the NC Justice Center which initially housed BlueprintNC when it was formed (the foundations 990 IRS reports are not current so there may be more) . The Goodmon family which owns WRAL has 4 family members on the board of the Fletcher Foundation including Barbara the President and Jim the chairman of the board. The Executive Director was formerly the head of the NC center for Voter Education, one of the original members of BlueprintNC. In addition Chris Fitzsimon, former WRAL reporter, is head of the liberal NC Policy Watch, the original lead attack group in the Blueprint coalition. Fitzsimon is also provided free airtime on Goodmon owned WRAL-FM from which he launches daily attacks on political opponents. The Fletcher Foundation has been a long time funder of Policy Watch is now housed in the Justice Center.

The best section comes next:

Wral is also actually doing one of the items in the strategy memo. The memo on page 3 calls for tracking McCrory “Campaign Promises” and “slam him when he contradicts his promise.” WRAL appears to have taken that for action by launching their “Promise Tracker“, complete with cute little ”Skull & Crossbones” symbols.

Gee, isn’t that a coincidence?

I took to Twitter to ask the station for comment on the omissions in their current story covering Blueprint NC:

@wral where is mention of your OWNER financing them? Liberal groups lay out blueprint for attack on state leaderswral.com/liberal-group-…

— LL1885 (@LadyLiberty1885) February 22, 2013

As of this posting, I have not received a reply from WRAL. Continue reading

Local Useful Idiot Builds Strawman Bonfire

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

As I surf the news each day, I sometimes hit local NC newspaper sites. Recently, one caught my eye where a writer out of Garner had posted an article in The Holly Springs Sun titled, Second Amendment motivations no longer a threat to Americans. Clearly, the author is a Constitutional scholar and knows that the latest round of gun grabbing is totally going to end gun violence…because you know, criminals and the mentally unstable totally follow laws. (Side Note: There is a response on the Holly Springs Sun site to Miller’s opinion piece of garbage. It’s a good one. Bravo.)

After reading it, I had to shake my head. This Keally Miller person could have a healthy, glowing bonfire if they burned all the strawmen in the piece. I could go paragraph by paragraph lighting them on fire but they pretty much do that for themselves. So I chose this line in particular that induced a spit-take:

With 60 percent of all homicides caused by firearms in the United States, we have a problem. One that cannot be fixed by placing guns in the hands of teachers or by ensuring every household is gun-equipped (some of the more ludicrous ideas I have heard).

OMG! 60% of homicides are caused by firearms! Scary but misleading statistic! EVERYBODY PANIC! Gee, arming myself so as not to become a statistic or putting armed guards in schools is totally ludicrous. Bundling that statement with the next sentence made me smile, frankly. Let me be the first to get in line to give Miller a “Gun free zone” sign for their lawn. It works so well everywhere it’s displayed. Kind of like a dinner gong for criminals for a free murder buffet. James O’Keefe Demonstrates for us how those in the press walk the gun free zone walk that goes with their talk:

[youtube=http://youtu.be/wt1Zy_ASNyA]

I’m going to go ahead and guess Miller pulled the 60% shock number right from Wikipedia who in turn took that right from the gun grabbing UN. I’m glad to see Miller backed up their 60% claim with no breakdown of the numbers, because now I get to do it for them, or rather Doug Ross has:

1. The rates of gun-related homicide, suicide and accidental death have decreased by 44 percent, 19 percent and 69 percent respectively since 1993 (for all races and ages).
2. After declining substantially over 10 years, gun suicides rates have significantly increased each year since 2006 (for all races and ages).

3. Since 1993 the rate of gun suicides has been higher than both gun homicides and accidental gun deaths combined (all races and ages).
4. The ratio of gun suicides to gun homicides for white Americans is 3.1 to 1 and is the highest across all races, with whites aged 15 to 34 being most at risk.
5. Americans aged 15 to 24 are the most at risk for gun homicide, but the ratio of gun homicides to accidental deaths for this group was just 1 to 3 (all races).
6. The majority of American gun homicides (54 percent) take the lives of black Americans, who constitute just 14 percent of the total population.
7. Homicide is the leading cause of death only for black Americans aged 15 to 34, with 87.4 percent of all homicides for this group caused by guns.
8. The ratio of gun homicides to gun suicides for black Americans is over 6.1 to 1, but for non-black Americans it is just 1 to 3 (a difference of nearly 20 times).
9. The ratio of gun homicides to deaths from flu/pneumonia for black Americans is 1.1 to 1, for non-black Americans, it is just 0.1 to 1 (a difference of 10 times).
10. The ratio of gun homicides to accidental death not due to firearms for black Americans is .50 to 1. For non-black Americans, it is just .05 to 1 (a difference of 10 times).

So, did you catch the gist there Keally Miller? No? Let me spell it out, young, black males are making up 87 percent of all gun homicides. This constitutes just 14% of our population, but are involved in more gun related homicide than any other group. Do the math, if you can…or just read the Chicago Sun Times regularly for a dose of the deaths.

These stats (above) end in 2009, but the CDC shows now 11,078 fire arms deaths. Yet another drop. Visiting the FBI crime statistics site might also behoove you. The FBI shows a much different number than the CDC at 8,583, but the data tells the same story as Doug Ross’ link. Don’t skip the section showing the justifiable homicide by citizens either.

Still not getting it? Try reading this. It’s got your 60% number in it: 60% of Gun Murders Take Place in Major Cities Which Voted for Obama

A quick hit on your gag inducing twist on Obama’s double standard on guns:

Local Garner citizen Helen Phillips, simply stated, “I never thought I would live to see some of our leaders so hateful.” While Ms. Phillips and I discussed the NRAs newest ad against President Obama, the one where they issue the absurd statement – “Barack Obama won’t have two sets of rules – armed guards for his rich friends and their elite schools, restrictions and gun free zone for ours,” she made a very wise insight, “they have protected every President since Abraham Lincoln.”

Miller’s quote is priceless. I think they were going for the shame tack, but ended up making the point that yeah, the President does have a double standard. So, yes, he is the President and he does get protection for his family. Not so fast, YES, he is indeed trying to deny that same protection for the average citizen with his 23 Executive Order laundry list for gun control. I refer you back to gun free zone signs — this is not hateful as your quote states, it’s TRUE. He has even re-instated the lifetime Secret Service protection recently.

In Summary, for Keally Miller:

Criminals don’t follow laws.
We don’t have a legal gun owner problem, we have a criminal (and at times mentally unstable person) problem.
Law biding citizens have every right to defend themselves as they see fit.
You cannot ban evil.

That defense includes using their Constitutionally protected right to bear arms if the case calls for it. I’d like to point out your entire article does not once mention the fact the Second Amendment main intent is for the citizens to protect themselves from their own government. The very government which is hurtling totally out of control and is currently trying to disarm them. Feel free to be a sheep for the government wolves. I prefer to be the armed Shepherd. The Coming Occupation Of Education

As I’ve written previously, Occupy has not gone away. It’s just pulled an ACORN with various attempts to legitimize themselves and in doing so, branching out into topic specific groups and areas. One such area is, not surprisingly, debt. Specifically Student Debt, as well as overall education issues.

While looking at video of the recent HKonJ rally in Raleigh that featured the NAACP, AFL-CIO and a host of other Left leaning groups, I came across an organization called The North Carolina Student Power Union which had attended the HKonJ. On Twitter, this group sports the handle @StudentPowerNC.

NCSPU is holding a conference coming up on the 16th of February. This conference’s tag line is ‘Retaking our schools! Remake Society!” Since NCSPU is aligned already with the local union presence, this snippet from their blog on the upcoming conference is not surprising:

Wealthy right-wing donors bought the North Carolina legislature and put Tea Party conservatives in the driver’s seat of our state. Their program is clear: public education and services will face massive cuts, and the general welfare of our state will be undermined to benefit the richest few. From voting rights to women’s rights, those in power want to take us backwards. North Carolina families, students, and workers cannot afford this regressive agenda – and we will not accept it. It is more urgent than ever to build upon multi-issue, grassroots mobilization efforts in NC. Our state has a rich history of activism and resistance, and as in the past, students must serve as leaders in the fight for social justice. The time for organizing a powerful student movement is now!

Apparently NCSPU is not concerned with actually obtaining jobs to pay off their own incurred debt and the possibility of not having to move back in with Mom and Dad. How dare Governor McCrory demand colleges offer courses that might yield an actual job? The group seems more preoccupied with making sure someone else is responsible for the poor choices of others while demonizing the usual suspects. Give us what we want because… because… rich people or something. Sounds familiar.

NCSPU’s mission statement reads much like an Occupy list of demands hitting poverty, social justice and of course, the horrific debt of students in the United States. One line in their mission statement stood out to me which in part is taken from the actual NC Constitution that contradicts their ‘education is a right’ mantra. From the NCSPU Mission Statement page:

We demand that North Carolina lives up to its constitution, a promise that education shall remain “as free as practicable” and accessible to all. We demand that a new power structure be created on our individual campuses and in society as a whole.

“As Free As Practicable.”

Some brief comments and observations on this statement and education:

The Public Education Experiment in this country has stuttered, sputtered and every four to five years reinvented itself in an effort to correct falling grades and pure lack of academic achievement. North Carolina is no exception; building the above qualifier into the state constitution was perhaps a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The latest incarnation of school transformation, The Common Core, is also proving to be an untested failure and massive federal overreach. The cost each time has gone up as competency has gone down. We spend more per pupil than almost any other nation with negligible results. A variety of factors play into this spending, with the most obvious area being the issue of Teacher Unions. There is quite a bit more to be said about Common Core and school funding versus competency, which I will likely cover in a separate post.

The bulk of spending in education in NC is allocated in employee salaries and benefits. This poses a budget situation much like what we saw happen in Wisconsin as NC contributes the Lion’s share of funds for education spending at 64.3%. 2009-2010, NC supplemented the budget with Federal funding and is part of the current cuts that have Democrats up in arms. NC has been relatively self-sufficient in its public school funding as previously noted by the 64.3% in state funds. These cuts seem to be an attempt to return to that. Also of note, Teacher pay since 92-93 has increased 119%. For those interested in the NC school budget cuts and the historical spending on education in NC see these two links:

2013-15 BUDGET INFORMATION
Education Spending in NC (as of 2011)

Of note in the second link:

Much of the money spent on public education in North Carolina pays for employee salaries and benefits. For the 2008-09 school year, the state spent nearly 91 percent of funds appropriated for public education on salary and benefits.

Returning to NCSPU – connections to Occupy:

This group is supported by another similar group, one called Debt Strike. This is clearly an Occupy Wall Street offshoot, as they state it themselves:

Debt is a tie that binds the 99%.

As individuals, families, and communities, most of us are drowning in debt to Wall Street for the basic things things we need to live, like housing, education, and health care. Even those of us who do not have personal debt are affected by predatory lending. Our essential public services are cut because our cities and towns are held hostage by the same big banks that have been bailed out by our government in recent years.

We are not a loan. Strike Debt came from a coalition of Occupy groups looking to build popular resistance to all forms of debt imposed on us by the banks. Debt keeps us isolated, ashamed, and afraid. We are building a movement to challenge this system while creating alternatives and supporting each other. We want an economy where our debts are to our friends, families, and communities — and not to the 1%.

Nowhere on their site did I note any reference to the over $5 trillion added by the President. Debt Strike didn’t have time to delve into that or the crony capitalism he practices tied to banking and Wall Street, but they did have time to compose a 132 page manual on how to combat debt and debt collectors. I found the section on ‘Economic Hate Crimes’ starting on page 44 very interesting.

The big push by Debt Strike right now is what they have titled ‘The Rolling Jubilee’. It’s “a bailout by the people for the people” that has reached cities across the country, mainly in areas where a large occupy presence has typically been. From the Rolling Jubilee site:

A bailout of the people by the people

Rolling Jubilee is a Strike Debt project that buys debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, abolishes it. Together we can liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal. Debt resistance is just the beginning. Join us as we imagine and create a new world based on the common good, not Wall Street profits.

Be sure to scroll down to the bottom to enjoy their debt and tuition graphics. I think some of them would benefit from reading Glenn Reynolds’ Higher Education Bubble posts or perhaps a better starting point would be his book. Perhaps some of their time might be spent on finding out of they are getting what they are paying for. Hindsight is 20/20 and knowing what most of us do today as we try to find work out in the real world, maybe some of us might have done some research on what fields actually have jobs that enable us to pay off the debt we incur. Novel idea, I know.

Debt Strike has a local Raleigh chapter as well, complete with the competence we’ve come to expect from Occupy. One can visit the Occupy Raleigh forums to see who is working on it. Since their site is apparently not functioning, you can get a look at the Raleigh chapter on Twitter: @StrikeDebtRal or check out Facebook. Both Debt Strike and Debt Strike NC have a page there; so does NCSPU.

There is a disconnect from reality going on here. For North Carolina, specifically, it would seem these local occupy related groups want to see lowered tuition rates yet no corresponding budget cuts. The money has to come from somewhere to meet these demands and no one disagrees education is a priority. I refer these groups back to “As Free As Practicable”. Continue reading

#JossWhedon and Zombies

Joss Whedon has decided to get on his celebrity soapbox and complain about Romney:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=6TiXUF9xbTo#!]

Politico, being the Obama ass-kissing site it is and displaying the maturity we’ve come to expect this campaign season, ran the story with the headline ‘Joss Whedon endorses Mitt Romney’. I’m not linking to it – I won’t send them the traffic.

I’ve only seen a few interviews with Whedon before, but I don’t recall him being quite as big of a douche as he is in this video. I think he was going for smart-ass and only managed the ass part. Having said that, this video fits right in with Big Bird, Binders and Bayonets. Petty, small and lame.

I had to watch it twice to get past him chewing on his own words in what can only be described as a condescending socialite whine. I think he might have been trying to channel Anna Wintour.

Pro-tip, Joss — Bayonets are pretty damn handy in a zombie apocalypse. I would have thought you’d know that given your undead background. Fail.

On a personal note…

Dear #JossWhedon – I’d take Romney in ZombieLand before Obama anyday.. because we know what happens to people on Obama’s watch. #BENGHAZI

— LL1885 (@LadyLiberty1885) October 28, 2012

You can see one of the faithful offered to kill me if I turned into a zombie. How compassionate of them. I have no fear of zombies, just people who can willfully ignore the last four years of failures — and Benghazi — and still vote for Obama. Soulless.

P.S. The Dollhouse sucked not because of the idea but the casting – Dushku is made of fail. I give you props for Serenity and The Avengers. Please, don’t do Wonder Woman like you ‘envisioned’ it. In fact, just don’t do it.

P. S. S. Props aside, like most in Hollywood, you’re a just a poser. Continue reading
