A Free Press Is Essential To Liberty

Without argument, a free press is essential to maintaining liberty and democracy. It’s so important, it is included in the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.
A free press should also be a transparent and honest press.

Yesterday, a Policy Watch reporter was escorted out of the annual NCBCE meeting. An invitation went out, citing ‘credentialed’ press only.

Local media, News and Observer, reported on the turn of events, however, had a few glaring omissions in their article.

Disclosure For Thee, But Not For Me

Blueprint NC partner, Progress NC, has been engaged in an ethics complaint against Governor Pat McCrory for some time now. Most recently, Progress NC has continued piling on by making video mash-ups to target the Governor.

The group, led by Gerrick Brenner, has focused only the Governor and seems to be paying little attention to the legal counsel responsible for actually reviewing and filing the economic interest documents. I asked Progress NC on Twitter about this, however, they have not yet replied:

Yadkin County Teacher Charged For Assaulting Handicapped Student

A teacher at Forbush High in Yadkin county has been charged with assaulting a handicapped student and obstructing justice. The teacher has been suspended with pay.

Fox 8:

Judy Ellison Wilburn, of Pfafftown, was arrested by the Yadkin County Sheriff’s Office on Friday and charged with one misdemeanor count of assault on a handicapped person and one felony count of common law obstruction of justice.

Wilburn may look familiar to some.

NC #ASRC Handout has Author Missing

In going over the December meeting materials from the Common Core Academic Standards Review Commission (ASRC), there was one handout that was missing any notation of who the author was.

This handout had a header on it that said, “Legislatively Required Standards Review Process in Other States”. A closer inspection of the original document’s properties showed it was authored by Michael Gilligan.
