About that Common Core Survey @NCAE’s Jewell Touted…

At the Senate Education Committee hearing on Wednesday, NCAE’s Mark Jewell leapt up with prepared remarks when the surprise opportunity for public comment was given.

Jewell presented his case backed by an ‘independent’ survey by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. That survey is many months old and I didn’t catch the full name at the time I was listening to the audio or I would have posted this earlier. I reached out to the NCAE on Twitter and asked for the poll link and methodology. They did not reply. Perhaps I should have hashtagged it “#TeacherPay.

@NCAE’s Mark Jewell: You said you had a study that said teachers love #CommonCore. Share it with the public – including the metholdology.

At any rate, I wasn’t going to wait around for the NCAE to respond. They won’t, so I am debunking it here. I hope the NC General Assembly members see this and understand the are being misled by Mr. Jewell and anyone else pushing this survey.. cough.. Senator Stein.. cough…. Continue reading

Just like yesterday in the House, we see more fear mongering from Democrats:

@ErnieWard_ @NCSenateDems This tweet is nothing but BS and Fear Mongering. Shame on you both. https://t.co/2egwutvOIY #ncpol #ncga

Who Wants To Keep Your Kids Tied To Common Core At #NCGA?

Yesterday, HB 1061 passed the House. The Chamber of Commerce Core was there making noise and fear mongering hoping to kill the bill. Did it work? Who wants to keep our schools and children prostrate to two D.C. trade groups and to a flawed, experimental set of standards?
Who voted no to HB 1061?

Representative(s): Adams; Alexander; Baskerville; Bell, L.; Brandon; Carney; Cotham; Cunningham; Earle; Farmer-Butterfield; Fisher; Floyd; Gill; Glazier; Goodman; Graham, C.; Graham, G.; Hall, D.; Hall, L.; Hamilton; Hanes; Harrison; Holley; Insko; Jackson; Lucas; Luebke; Meyer; Michaux; Mobley; Moore, R.; Pierce; Reives; Richardson; Terry; Tine; Tolson; Wilkins; Wray

Every single one of them is a Democrat.
Looks like the very people complaining about “politicizing” the standards have just drawn their own “politicizing” line in the sand… right over our children and their education. Continue reading

A Must Read For #NCGA Worried About Race To The Top

With the passage of HB 1061 yesterday and the discussion of it the day before at the House Education Committee, we heard some rumblings and worries about the Race To The Top grant. This worry we will have to pay back funds unused is a Red herring, people.

Get up to speed first – see what the deal is and how our education leaders committed us to the brand name Common Core in our grant BEFORE the standards were even released:

About that RTTT Grant – PT I
About that RTTT Grant – PT II

Once you are up to speed, now hit this article at Breitbart entitled, “NC Nervous About Ditching Common Core Standards”.

The main thrust of the article is some legislators are worried about having to return Race To The Top Funds. I think Rep. Holloway’s remarks were meant to stem the worries about it, not necessarily that he believes we would have to give it back. From the Breitbart piece, emphasis added: Continue reading

Chamber Watch: NC Chamber Of Commerce Fear mongers On #HB1061

Chamber Watch: Keeping an eye on the Chambers of Commerce Core

Today’s article is on The NC Chamber of Commerce. Yesterday the NC General Assembly’s House passed HB 1061, Replace Common Core To Meet NC’s Needs. The response of the NC Chamber of Commerce was to fear monger:

Fear Mongering & False. RT @NCChamber: HB1061 sends a signal to job creators in NC & every state that NC not ready to compete. #ncga

— LL1885 – A.P. Dillon (@LadyLiberty1885) June 5, 2014

The NC Chamber has pushed the flawed and experimental Common Core as some kind of magic bullet that will create this amazing “21st Century Workforce” without one shred of evidence that these standards do anything they claim to. In fact, the evidence is to the contrary: Continue reading

GUEST POST: What I Saw At The #NCGA Senate Ed Cmte Mtg

This is a guest post (below the break)from a reader who attended yesterday’s Senate Education committee meeting, where SB 812 was discussed and passed. SB 815 was also discussed and passed, which is important as it serves to protect our student’s privacy and data.

Pay attention to the portion where Mark Jewell of the NCAE steps up with prepared remarks. In those remarks, he quotes an independent study and says he will make it available to the Committee. I’ve challenged them to make it public and include the methodology.

@NCAE’s Mark Jewell: You said you had a study that said teachers love #CommonCore. Share it with the public – including the metholdology.
