An Iredell-Statesville Public Schools teacher has been arrested following accusations she sent sexually explicit videos and a nude image to a student.

According to the Iredell Sheriffs’ Office, April Dawn Viney was arrested on Oct. 4 and charged with two counts of felony dissemination of obscenity.

Her age at the time of arrest is 43, according to the custody and criminal history database VineLink. However, multiple media outlets are reporting her age as 44.

Viney was issued a $50,000 secured bond and was being held at the Iredell County Detention Center. She was later released on the same day as her arrest.

According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office ICSO, a report regarding Viney was received by their office on Sept. 22. Detectives located the victim, a former West Iredell High student described as an “underclassman.”

The victim was enrolled as an “online high school student” when the incident took place, according to the ICSO.

Investigators proceeded to conduct several witness interviews, process cell phone records, and also executed search warrants on the social media accounts held by Viney.

Records on file with the state show Viney has an active teaching license that will not expire until June of 2027. The license was issued in July of 2022 in the areas of English 9-12 and Language Arts 6-9.

Iredell Statesville Schools Chief of Strategic Planning and Student Services Boen Nutting issued a statement that said Viney had been suspended with pay pending an investigation.

The statement also listed Viney’s work history, serving as an English teacher at West Iredell High since 2019. Prior to that, her employment with the district goes back two decades earlier from 2002-2009 at South Iredell High and Lake Norman High.

Viney is the third Iredell-Stateville teacher arrested in 2022.

Softball coach Thomas Patrick Strahan, age 58, was arrested on May 18 and was charged with felony indecent liberties with a child.

Elizabeth Suzanne Bailey, age 36, surrendered to police on Aug.1 and was charged with felony statutory rape of a person who is 15 years of age or younger, indecent liberties with a minor, and sexual activity with a student.
