#NCGA Proposes Building Rules Changes
The NC General Assembly is proposing some rule changes to for the legislative building and legislative office building areas. This is most likely in response to Moral Monday and the description by Judge Nancy Hamilton that the NCGA’s building’s ‘vague’ rules.
Obviously a response to the #MoralMonday protests, GOP #NCGA proposes new rules on how to behave at Capitol. http://t.co/cFzAOfZ9Xb #NCpol

Those ‘vague’ rules have been in place and not revamped since 1987. Up until Moral Monday, there had been no problems with the rules and many protests had taken place — without arrests. Continue reading

About That Wake Cty District Attorney Race…
For those of you paying attention to the primary shenanigans going on in North Carolina this year, the quality Democrat candidates I’ve covered and the series I’ve been doing on various judicial races, this item will fit right in. I briefly touched on this race, but had not really dug into it properly. So, here’s some digging in.
It’s been called to my attention that one of the candidates for Wake County District Attorney who is registered as a Republican has a history of supporting Democrats. Jeff Cruden has voted Democrat in no less than 6 primary elections Continue reading
SCOTUS Rules In Favor of Prayer Before Council Meetings
A story about a ruling from the Supreme Court that has NC ramifications: Supreme Court: Opening prayers at council meetings constitutional
Excerpt:
The Supreme Court has upheld the right of local officials to open town council meetings with prayer, ruling that this does not violate the Constitution even if the prayers routinely stress Christianity.
The court said in a 5-4 decision Monday that the content of the prayers is not critical as long as officials make a good-faith effort at inclusion.
The ruling was a victory for the town of Greece, N.Y., outside of Rochester.
“The prayer opportunity in this case must be evaluated against the backdrop of historical practice,” the majority wrote in its opinion. “As a practice that has long endured, legislative prayer has become part of our heritage and tradition, part of our expressive idiom, similar to the Pledge of Allegiance, inaugural prayer, or the recitation of ‘God save the United States and this honorable Court’ at the opening of this Court’s sessions.”
That’s a big win for various embattled state and local meetings under attack for opening their meetings with a prayer. For example in North Carolina, take Rowan county where “certain types of prayer were no longer welcome.” This ruling by the SCOTUS must be a real blow to the ACLU and ACLU of NC who filed the suit to stop the prayers in Rowan. Cue sad trombone. Continue reading

To quickly recap, there are three seats to run for in the Court of Appeals, however, one candidate has the distinction of running unopposed: Donna Stroud. That means we have two other races to look at:
Judge Robert C. Hunter’s Seat
Judge Mark A. Davis’s Seat
Yesterday we looked at the Hunter seat, today we turn to the Davis race. Judge Mark. A. Davis is running for reelection and Judge Paul Holcombe III is challenging. We’ll start with the challenger first this time. Continue reading
