Durham Middle School Teacher Arrested In Drug Raid

A Durham public schools teacher has been arrested as part of a drug raid jointly conducted by Carteret County Sheriff’s department officers and the Morehead City Police department.

Megan Elizabeth Shulse, age 37, faces multiple drug-related charges in Alamance and Carteret Counties that include:

  • trafficking marijuana by possession
  • manufacturing marijuana
  • manufacturing and transporting, possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver
  • delivering marijuana
  • maintaining a vehicle and a dwelling for manufacturing of marijuana
  • selling and delivering marijuana

Also arrested alongside Shulse is her boyfriend, Phillip Edward Satterfield, age 45. The couple was arrested at their residence of  3929 S. Jim Minor Road, Haw River.

Satterfield and Shulse have been remanded to the Carteret County Jail on July 23 under secured bonds of $250,000.

Law enforcement from Alamance County searched Shulse and Satterfield’s Haw River home and found over 18 pounds of THC extract, over two pounds of marijuana, around one ounce of psilocybin (hallucinogenic mushrooms), 9 grams of MDMA and $14,936 in cash.

The raid was the result of a year-long investigation into marijuana trafficking into the area from Alamance County by multiple agencies including law enforcement officials from Alamance County, Morehead police and the Carteret County Sheriff’s office.

Carteret deputies also searched 507 Saddlehorn Court in Swansboro where they seized over 10 pounds of marijuana and products containing THX as well as $21,000 in cash.

As of July 28, Shulse was still listed as an 8th grade Language Arts teacher at Sherwood Githens Middle School in Durham.

According to state records, she also has a valid North Carolina teaching license in the areas of Elementary Education (K-8) and Exceptional children: general curriculum (K-12).
