A man described as a “community soccer coach” at a Rockingham County Public Schools high school is facing charges of taking indecent liberties with a student.
Amiel Gemali Cervantes-Espinosa, age 21, has been charged with one count of felony indecent liberties with a student according to a statement by the Rockingham County Sheriffs’ Office.
The charge is a Class I felony with a prison sentence of three to 12 months.
Cervantes-Espinosa is being held in the Rockingham County Detention Facility on a secured $30,000 bond.
“Rockingham County Schools System notified the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office of the accusation when it was brought to their attention Monday morning (April 26, 2022) and an immediate investigation followed,” the statement says.
Amiel Gemali Cervantes-Espinosa, who also goes by the name “Amiel Cervantes,” turned himself in at the Rockingham County sheriff’s office at around 4 p.m. on April 27.
At the time he turned himself in, Cervantes-Espinosa had a “community soccer coach” at Dalton McMichael High School.
Rockingham County Public Schools issued the following statement, which indicated Cervantes-Espinosa is no longer a coach at the high school:
“Rockingham County Schools has been working in collaboration with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office on this situation from the moment the allegations came to light.
We are committed to the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, and are doing everything we can to assist McMichael High School through this difficult situation.
Mr. Cervantes is no longer a coach in the Rockingham County School system, and we will continue to assist the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office with their ongoing investigation.”
