A now-former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools teacher was arrested on four felony counts related to sexual activity with a student.

MARIA AMANDA HEYLIGER
Update: Dec. 7 court records show that all charges against Heyliger were dismissed due to lack of “admissible evidence.”
“At this time, the state does not have admissible evidence to prove the crime. While the victim initially spoke with police, he has not been in communication with the state and has shown no intent to assist in prosecuting the case,” the court record states. “His testimony would be required to prove the crime.”
“Additionally, the police have media taken as a screenshot with evidence of the crime, but no way to authenticate that media as required at trial,” according to court documents. “That media was not located on the defendant’s phone when it was ultimately searched. Without a cooperative victim and independent authenticated media, the state does not have the evidence to proceed.”
Maria Amanda Heyliger, age 33, was arrested on Aug. 4 on two felony counts each of sexual activity with a student and indecent liberties with a student
Heyliger was given a $30,000 bond which she posted in the early morning hours of Aug. 5 and was released. It is unclear from police records whether the bond was secured or unsecured.
According to warrant information, the victim was 18 years old and the alleged incidents happened at a Charlotte hotel sometime between May 6 and June 13 of this year.
Heyliger taught English at Rocky River High School. She had been a substitute with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools district (CMS) beginning in January 2019.
Heyliger was made a permanent employee in August 2019 as an English Language Arts teacher at Ridge Road Middle School. Later in 2019, she transferred to Mint Hill Middle School.
According to CMS, she resigned on July 28 and it is unclear if she gave the 30 days notice required by law. Heyliger had previously resigned in 2021 but was rehired again in 2022 to teach at Rocky River High School.
The district had no further statement to offer other than they are aware of the allegations against Heyliger.
Heyliger holds a North Carolina teaching license in the areas of English 9-12, Social Studies 6-9, and Language Arts 6-9. The license was issued in July 2022 and has an expiration date of June 30, 2024.
