On June 15, Zebulon Police Department (ZPD) arrested 64-year-old Miguel Bonano and charged him with taking indecent liberties with a student and indecent liberties with a child. Bonano was issued a $25,000 bond which he posted the same day as his arrest and was released.

The announcement of the arrest was posted on the ZBD Facebook page. According to the post, the department began investigating after a student came forward on May 25 with a complaint about Bonano, a teacher at East Wake Academy.

“Bonano has been a teacher at East Wake Academy since 2003. He has had many students throughout the years, ” ZPD wrote. “Current or former students who believe they may have information pertinent to this case should contact Detective Marcella Abate at 919-823-1825.”

East Wake Academy is located in Zebulon.

The ZPD post went on to say “We appreciate the cooperation of East Wake Academy. We would not have had a successful investigation without their assistance and support.”

East Wake Academy has confirmed that Bonano is no longer employed at the school but did not say whether he was fired or if he resigned.

Records on file with the state show Bonano has an active and valid teaching license in the area of “Business Information Technology Education.” That license, unless revoked, will not expire until June 30, 2024.
