A Johnston County School Resource Officer (SRO) and his public school teacher wife are being probed by the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) for inappropriate interactions with students, per the JoCo Report.
According to the JoCo Report, Michael and Ami Medlin had inappropriate relationships and interactions with at least two students; one apparently a male and one a female. Michael Medlin has been terminated from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and Ami Medlin has been suspended by Johnston County Public Schools.
The two alleged victims are believed to be students or former students at Corinth Holders High School where the resource officer and his wife worked. The resource officer was fired this week. His wife was suspended by the school system last week amidst a NC State Bureau of Investigation.
Deputy Mike Medlin was terminated from his position on Monday, May 23, by Sheriff Steve Bizzell. Deputy Medlin’s wife, Ami Medlin, was suspended Monday, May 16 from her teaching position at Corinth Holders High by Johnston County Public Schools Human Resources.
The JoCo Report obtained Michael Medlin’s termination letter, which gives some detail about the alleged interactions.
According to the letter, Medlin admitted he had a student in his home and in his bedroom, that the student had “actually been in bed with you and your wife to “watch movies,” and “acknowledged having the student in your home while he was intoxicated and that he had been involved with your family.”
The termination letter also revealed social media interactions between the Medlins and at least one of the alleged victims.
“On May 17, 2022, the SBI was requested by the District Attorney to investigate Mike Medlin, a school resource officer with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and his wife, Ami Medlin, a teacher at Corinth Holders High School involving allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a former student,” says a statement from the SBI.
The SBI also said that the “investigation is ongoing. No additional information is available.”
“Johnston County Schools take[s] any allegations of staff misconduct seriously. Although we cannot discuss the specifics of an investigation into alleged staff misconduct, we can confirm that whenever such allegations arise, our administration responds swiftly, by investigating the allegations and, sometimes, by removing staff from classrooms pending completion of a thorough review,” according to a statement from the school district. “Beyond that, the school system is not at liberty to provide additional information.”
According to state licensing records, Ami Doreen Medlin is a 22-year veteran teacher who holds an active North Carolina teaching license that does not expire until June 30, 2023.
