A Buncombe County Public Schools teacher has been sentenced to 13-25 months in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to sexual activity with a student.

Keith William Grandy
“Keith Grandy pleaded guilty to 2 counts of Sex Act with Student today; he was sentenced to 13-25 months active imprisonment – the max sentence for his record-level,” tweeted the Buncombe County District Attorney’s office.
Grandy must register as a sex offender for a period of 30 years after he finishes his prison term. He also can have no contact with the victim for the rest of his life.
In November of 2019, Keith William Grandy, then age 37, was charged with two counts of sex acts with a student. Grandy is now 38. The victim was 17 at the time.
After continued investigations into Grandy, he was later given an additional charge of felony sex act with a student. He was originally released on a $65,000 bond following his November arrest but was later taken back into custody with a new bond for the additional felony charge of $30,000.
Grandy had been teaching at North Buncombe High School, however, law enforcement said none of the three charges against him took place on school property. The Buncombe County school district suspended Grandy. It is unclear at this time if he was later terminated or if he resigned.
Following his arrest in 2019, Buncombe County Schools released the following statement:
“We are shocked by the allegations, and we are cooperating fully with law enforcement. School administrators are working with staff and students to provide support and help everyone stay focused on teaching and learning during this difficult time. Administrators will also be communicating with parents later today.”
Grandy’s teaching license was not revoked according to records maintained by the state, but instead, his license appears to have expired in June of 2020.

Grandy was the 54th teacher arrest logged by this website in 2019. Including Grandy, only three of the 65 arrests recorded that year appear to have thus far resulted in a conviction. The other two convictions are former Lincolnton High School principal Tony Worley and former Gaston County Assistant Principal Lisa Rothwell.

Tony Worley
Worley was sentenced to a maximum of three years and six months in prison related to sex crimes involving a student. He pleaded guilty in Lincoln County Superior Court to consolidated charges including multiple felony counts of sex act with a student by a principal. He is currently incarcerated at the Davidson Correctional Center and his release date is set for Apr 26, 2022.

Lisa Rothwell
Rothwell was arrested on six felony counts of sex with a student by a school official. Warrants included details that Rothwell had both sexual intercourse and oral sex with a student on six separate occasions between April 1 and July 31, 2019. She pleaded guilty and received no jail time, but instead received a 10 to 21 months suspended prison sentence and 24 months of probation.
