A former Guilford County middle school teacher has been charged with multiple sex offenses, including statutory rape.

This is the 63rd educator arrest tracked by this website in 2019.

Carly Shea Smith, age 41, has been charged with statutory rape, statutory sex offense of a child under the age of 15, indecent liberties with a student by a teacher and indecent liberties with a child.

Statutory rape and statutory sex offense of a child are both Class B1 felonies that carry a sentence of 144 months to life in prison for each count.

Indecent liberties with a child is a Class F felony that carries a sentence of 10-41 months.

Indecent liberties by a teacher is a Class I felony carrying a sentence of 3-12 months.

Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that Smith’s bond was set at $30,000. Her next court appearance is Jan. 16, 2020.

Information in the arrest warrant states that the alleged offenses took place over a six month period spanning Dec. 1, 2018, and May 23, 2019. It is unclear if the victim was a student at Northern Middle School or where the alleged incidents took place.

According to Guilford County Schools, Smith was hired Jan. 11, 2016. Smith resigned from her role at Northern Guilford Middle school earlier this year on Jun. 24, 2019. The last known salary for Smith was 2017-18 at $48,500.

Smith has an active NC teaching license in the areas of Learning Disabled K-12 and
Mentally Disabled (K-12). Unless revoked, it does not expire until Jun. 30 of 2020.
