Pamlico Public Schools teacher charged with sex act with a student, indecent liberties

A Pamlico County Public Schools teacher has been charged by the Pamlico County Sheriff’s office with having sex with a student and for taking indecent liberties.

Kara Walton, age 33, is charged with participating in a sex act with a student and taking indecent liberties with a student. Both charges are felonies.

At the time of the alleged incidents, Walton had been a teacher and assistant softball coach at Pamlico High School where the victim was a former student.

Pamlico County Schools notified the Sheriff’s office on June 14 of possible activity involving a student and a teacher.

The alleged incidents happened between March 24 and June 11 according to District Attorney Scott Thomas.

According to media reports Henry Rice, Director Of Student Services for Pamlico County Schools had said Walton had resigned prior to the incident on unrelated circumstances and that her contract was over, however, Rice confirmed to me that Walton resigned on June 12, 2019.

“All employees receive a criminal background check and all employees are fingerprinted,” said Rice in an email.

State records show that Walton holds an active North Carolina teaching license in the areas of Science 9-12, Science 6-9, and Technology Engineering and Design Education -820.  The license was issued July 1, 2017, and expires June 30, 2022.
