Mystery Teacher Pay Group To Hold Another Rally
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Aim Higher NC, but they’ve got a rally this weekend to support raising teacher pay. By the way, still no idea who runs Aim Higher NC or who funds them.
Join us in Raleigh on Saturday for a rally to support raising teacher pay! https://t.co/HlG15TrTyy #ncpol #ncga pic.twitter.com/yDlbD62RTV

Unfortunately, Aim Higher seems to have pinned their rally to that Houston job fair ad that seems too good to be true. Aim Higher has named the Facebook page for this rally “Houston, We Have a Problem: Stop NC’s Education Exodus!” WWNC 570’s Pete Kaliner thinks Houston has a problem and might be a bit too good to be true too. As Predicted, Teacher Pay Raise Still Not Enough
We knew the NCAE would have a problem with a historic level of raises for teachers.
#NCAE: Treat us like professionals. #NCGA: Here’s a performance-based 4-yr contract + bonus. #NCAE: ……. You hate teachers! #NCpol

State Superintendent and CCSSO President-elect, Dr. Atkinson throws in her two cents. Yes, it’s not enough for her either. Apparently, not enough blood came out of the stone. A $5,309 average raise is just not enough — Atkinson wants MOAR! Everything should be fixed all at once… but the real axe being ground here is that the Dept. of Public Instruction (DPI) is going to get slashed by 30%.
GOOD — now that is something long overdue for a department that wields far too much power and has added pricey staff at an alarming rate.

NC Common Core Action Alert – SB 812
Common Core Fighters,
On Wednesday, June 4th, the NC General Assembly’s Senate Education/Higher Education Committee will be considering SB 812 – Replace Common Core To Meet NC’s Needs. The meeting will be at 10 am, room 544 of the Legislative Office Building.
Also being heard that morning by the same committee is SB 815 – Ensuring privacy of student records. This is one of a couple bills those of us working behind the scenes knew was coming and will address data collection concerns not covered in SB 812 / HB 1061.
ACTION ITEM:
Email each Senator BEFORE JUNE 4th and ask them to support SB 812 – Replace Common Core To Meet NC’s Needs. I’ve provided a sample letter and the contact information for the Senate Education/Higher Education committee below.
For your reference or to see individual Senator contact information visit the Senate Education / Higher Education Committee Website LINK

The ‘Common Core Is Just Standards’ Lie
Anyone who has dug into Common Core and complained it has its tentacles into everything and is dictating how teachers teach has been hit with the proponent’s main line “the Common Core is just a set of standards”.
That line is a lie. Any parent paying attention to the proliferation of the eerily similar examples of overly convoluted Common Core math assignments coming from every state who has adopted the Core can tell you that. I’ve had the lovely experience of watching my own child struggle with such an assignment. When attempting to show him the quick, accurate way of writing the algorithm instead of a diagram of some kind accompanied with a paragraph on ‘how they know this answer’, my child melted down and told me, “No mom, I can’t do it that way! It’s not the way we’re supposed to do it. I have to do it the way the teacher did it or it’s wrong.”
Even now my body tenses and my teeth set on edge recalling that exchange.
By the way, I told him he can do it the way that he finds is best for him. That way was the algorithm. He now does it his way first to get the right answer and then puts what Common Core wants on the paper in order to get marked correct. This isn’t customization or personalization of education, this is training kids to jump through specific hoops. It’s not teaching critical thinking, it’s teaching obedience. This isn’t rigorous, this is developmentally inappropriate and serves as a mental beat down for our youngest learners.
Returning to the talking point that the Core is just standards, consider this article in the Statesville Record & Landmark: Continue reading

SW Wake News Highlights Teacher Pay Rally, Buries New Principal Hire
The South West Wake News has a big story on the Apex Teacher Pay rally I covered last week. On the left hand side of their site, however, is the news that the Wake Board hired a new principal for Fuquay Varina for $93,625.
Cue a rally in Fuquay in 3…2…1…??? Continue reading

The Other White Privilege Conference
Everyone’s been paying attention to the annual “White Privilege” conference in Madison, Wisconsin. They’re also focused on Dr. Pook – the Common Core Standards contributor who claimed his reason for working on the standards was his “White Privilege”.
Well, a weekend ago (May 16-17), Lawrence University held their own “White Privilege Symposium”. Lawrence University is also in Wisconsin. Who knew the Cheese state was so racially obsessed? Just in case you were wondering, this is indeed 2014…
