Police Charge School Teacher with Simple Assault
On December 12, 2024, the Burlington Police Department received a report that Derek Tang, a 50- year-old teacher at Turrentine Middle School, had physically assaulted a student on school property.
Following an investigation by the Burlington Police Department, Tang has been charged with one count of Simple Assault. The assault appeared to be an isolated incident, and no other students were involved. As soon as this information was reported to Alamance-Burlington School staff, it was immediately reported to the Burlington Police Department.
Tang was arrested and transported to the Alamance County Detention Center on Monday, December 16, 2024. Tang was given a $1,500 secured bond. A photograph of Tang was not available for release.
The Alamance-Burlington School System is cooperating fully with the Burlington Police Department, and the investigation is continuing.
