Halifax Coach charged with assaulting student

A Halifax County teacher is facing an assault charge involving a student.

Paul Anthony Nicholson, Jr, age 37, was arrested by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and was charged with felony assault by strangulation on Dec. 28.

On Dec. 20, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) received a report of an alleged assault by a coach of s student that occurred at Southeast Collegiate Preparatory Academy.

The alleged assault happened a few days before the report came in, per the HCSO.

“Through a joint investigation with the School Resource Officer and the Halifax County Criminal Investigations Division a warrant for arrest was obtained,” a statement by HCSO on Facebook said. “Detective Sergeant A.C. Wood obtained a warrant for Paul Anthony Nicholson Jr., 37, of Enfield for Felony Assault by Strangulation.”

Nicholson was issued a $2,500 bond and his next court appearance is Jan. 3, 2024.

Halifax County Public Schools has not yet issued a statement.

As of Dec. 28, Nicholson does not appear on the district’s staff website nor does his name appear on the school’s website.

Records on file with the state show Nicholson does not hold an NC teaching license.
