A Cumberland County Public Schools teacher was arrested last week on sex crime charges involving a 14-year-old girl.

Darrell James Tyner, age 53, has been charged with two counts of second degree sex offense involving a minor child per charging documents. He was arrested on the morning of July 26 and was released later that afternoon on a $50,000 unsecured bond.

The incident did not take place on school grounds but in a private home.

According to the warrant for his arrest, the 14-year-old female victim’s mother caught Tyner in her daughter’s bedroom after she went to sleep at which time he had allegedly exposed his penis and had lifted the girl’s shirt to touch one of her breasts.

It is unclear from warrant information what Tyner was doing in the girl’s home at the time the incident occurred.

Cumberland County Public Schools has yet to issue a formal statement.

Arrest information shows Tyner has worked for Cumberland County Schools for approximately 17 years and at the time of his arrest was employed at Montclair Elementary School as a fifth-grade teacher.

Tyner has an active teaching license on file with the state in the areas of Elementary Education (K-6) and Reading K-12. The license was issued in 2020 and, unless revoked, will expire on June 30, 2025.

UPDATE:
Tyner’s license has been summarily suspended as of April 24, 2024.

June 3, 2025: Tyner was given 30 days in jail and was fined $375. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.
The charges included “Sex Act by a guardian/custodian,” and assault on a female.
