A Union County Public Schools teacher has been arrested on indecent liberties charges involving a student.

Cory McDowell, age 35, was arrested by the Monroe Police Dept. and charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a student. McDowell was issued a secure bond by a magistrate which he posted and was released from custody. The bond amount is unknown at this time.
Indecent liberties with a student is a Class I felony with a sentence of 3 to 12 months in prison.
Police say they were contacted on May 25 with a tip of inappropriate activity by a teacher and began an investigation. McDowell was later arrested on June 9.
McDowell is an English teacher at the Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA), a school in the Union County Public School district.
According to a press release, the Monroe Police Department will be working closely with the Union Public Schools and the investigation is still ongoing.

An active teaching license is on file with the state for McDowell in the area of English 9-12. That license was issued less than a year ago in July 2020. Unless revoked or surrendered, his license will not expire until June of 2025.
