Chris Reid, age 69, has been charged with one count of Third Degree Sexual Exploitation of a Minor by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office on May 13.

The charge is a Class H felony that carries a sentence of four to 25 months in prison. A bond for Reid was set at $15,000 and he was taken to the Buncombe County Detention Center where he remains as of May 15.

A warrant was executed on Reid’s home in order to obtain his electronic devices such as phones and computers. The case remains open and more charges may be filed.

Buncombe County Schools issued a statement:

“This evening, Buncombe County Schools district leaders were informed that the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office arrested Chris Reid, a school psychologist with the school system since August 2017. His most recent assignment was Enka High, Enka Middle, and Enka Intermediate

Mr. Reid has been suspended pending an internal investigation, per our protocols. BCS will fully cooperate with law enforcement in this matter. This is shocking news for our school system. At this time, there are only limited details available. As this is still an open investigation, there is nothing further that we are able to release. Please reach out to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office with any questions.”

There is a license on file with the state with an expiration date of  June 2025 in the area of school psychology. That license has been summarily suspended as of the end of January 2024 and was revoked in October 2024.

Reid is the eighth education employee arrest tracked by this website in 2021.

UPDATE: Reid was convicted on Mar. 10, 2025, on a single charge: distributing obscene material. The third degree exploitation of a minor charges were not factored in. He was given a suspended sentence of 18 months probation.

Court sentencing documents state, “Defendant is to obtain sex offender specific evaluation with Internet Behavior Consulting, LLC comply with recommendations; Defendant has obtained evaluation is to show proof to PO; Defendant is to continue treatment comply with all recommendations; Defendant is not to seek or accept employment as school counselor.”
