A former Harnett County school resource officer was arrested on indecent liberties.

WILLIAM MITCHELL EDGE
William Mitchell Edge, age 47, was arrested Tuesday by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) and was charged with five counts of indecent liberties with a child.
Edge surrendered himself at the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 3. He was taken before a magistrate and was issued a $150,000 unsecured bond. Allegedly the case includes only one victim and that child was not a student in or resident of Harnett County.
The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office indicated Edge was hired in Aug. 2018. During that time, he had been working as a school resource officer (SRO) at Boone Trail Elementary School.
In the Fall of 2019, the Federal Bureau of Investigation contacted the NCSBI, triggering an investigation into Edge which began in Nov. 2019. A month later, Edge was terminated by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. Prior to working at the sheriff’s office, Edge was employed by the Lillington Police Department.
The Harnett County Public School district said in a statement that Edge is not a current employee. The district is also “not aware of any complaints” made against Edge and the district is working with authorities.
Edge is not a paid public school employee and is not included in the educator arrest lists, but instead in a non-teaching arrest list maintained by this website. He is the second such arrest in 2020.
