A China Grove Elementary School teacher has been accused of having sex with a student and faces multiple sex offense charges.
Brittany Leigh Howard, age 28, was arrested and charged with two counts of statutory rape of a person 15 years of age or younger, two counts of sexual activity with a student, and two counts of statutory sex offense with a person 15 years or younger.
“At the time of the offense, the defendant was a teacher at China Grove Elementary School and the victim was a student at this same school,” the warrant says.
The bond for Howard was set at $60,000.
An anonymous tip earlier this month led police to open an investigation into Howard.
The school district said Howard resigned in June 2018. It is unclear if Howard gave the required 30-day notice required by law.
The district is also required by law to report her resignation, if it is related to criminal investigation, to the State Board of Education.
Officials with Rowan-Salisbury Schools confirmed that Howard was a teacher at China Grove Elementary from August 2012 to June 2013 and from 2014 to 2018.
Howard worked as a language arts teacher at West Rowan Middle School from August 2013 to June 2014.
